three-time WWWF tag champs, great gimmick and look- the barefoot martial arts bad guys from Japan, also both had a lot of power, they cheated well, threw salt in many an eye and generally, IMO, were one of the best teams of all time in any federation, they sometimes get overlooked because of all the great heel teams the WWWF had in the 70s (Valiants, Blackjacks, Executioners, Samoans) but over the long haul they were the most sucessful, also both Fuji and Tanaka could work a singles match- I enjoy many of their mid-card appearances at MSG facing Strongbow or Maivia or Garea etc.  Individually, they put over many a top face incl. Rhodes, Backlund, Mascaras, Putski and together they won championships...great team

I liked Fuji and Saito better because I saw them more and Tanaka didnt impress me all that much.

Fuji's a crackup.  Love him.

Watching Toru against Bruno in the last match at the old Garden I was impressed. He followed that with Garden main events in tag action with Monsoon, Kowalski and Arakawa and later single headliner against Morales. Tanaka matched well against Bruno who would rally against him after being on the receiving end of salt, karate to the throat and chokes behind the ref's back. Fuji was short changed in NYC main events ,getting only a tag with Tanaka against Pedro and Bruno.I'll remember Fuji more for his role as manager and the Fuji Vice skits then his work with Toru and Saito. As far as the team of Tanaka and Fuji......enjoyed the Prof's partnership with Mitsu more.

I was not at all impressed by Fuji or Tanaka.  Stalling, karate thrusts, chokes, salt, that was about it.  Neither did a damn thing when it came to actual wrestling.  As mentioned previously, Fuji and Saito were much better because Saito could actually wrestle and carry the team while Fuji did whatever foreign heel comedy he always did.  Saito in those days was gold, Fuji and Tanaka bored me to tears.

People forget that Tanaka was a singles threat to Bruno Sammartino.

This team had some nice "teamwork moves" together. Loved the "kamikazee clothesline". If you add up all the days they were WWWF tag team champions and compare it to other teams they are still in the top two or three even to this day. Largely forgotten ~ unrightfully so.

Neither of them were great wrestlers per se, but they drew heat like crazy. I give credit to Mr. Fuji, he took many great bumps, especially from Pedro Morales when they matched up.

Tanaka and Fugi were clearly superior. Saito and Fugi kind of got that "here you go you are managed by Albano here is a run or two with the tag belts" treatment.

I think their stalling routine was better accepted (just part of things) in the 70s. They always had to cheat to win which made them come off as more vulnerable.

Adding

Mr Fugi invented hardcore wrestling LOL

Bonus points as Fugi was from Hawaii and I don't even know if Tanaka was from Japan but they sure had all of us fooled.

Celebrate the greatness of this team today by wrapping a "tag rope" around your boss' neck and rubbing salt in his eyes

Tanaka (Charlie Kalani) was an interesting guy. He didn't debut in pro wrestling until he was 36 years old. He retired from the United States Army with the rank of  Master Sergeant and taught self defense during his hitch. As stated earlier, he was an incredible natural opponent for Bruno and they did great business for years and years. Tanaka even got an MSG title shot against Pedro and was definitely considered the alpha male on that team.

When did each debut in the WWWF? And did Fuji ever main event MSG in a singles match against the world champion at the time?

Tanaka was a beast. Fuji didn't add much, ever.
