Before the era when half-minute championship "reigns" through booking flukes would become common enough, I was always amused by the way the having the NWA world title for four days was more an ignominious detriment to Tommy Rich's resume than something that really boosted his credibility.

In the AWA run in 1987, they sure did push the "Former NWA champion" status to the moon, which only served to amuse anybody to whom it might matter, since they knew it was a fluke reign that held the record for shortest ever.

At least Ken Patera remembered to do that in his 1980 run as comparison.

I don't think there's anything wrong with that, but count me out.

For whomever asked about the AWA, I seem to remember reading in an Apter mag that Rich had a title match against Bockwinkie, and had him beat, but Gino Hernandez interfered.  I'm not sure what territory it happened in, though.

If Gino interfered, I'd guess the match happened in Houston.

Probably the following match.

3/26/82 Houston
AWA Champion Nick Bockwinkel beat Tommy Rich

Then Gino is wrestling Tommy on a card several weeks later.

5/14/82 Houston
Junkyard Dog beat AWA Champion Nick Bockwinkel on a 3rd fall dq
Gino Hernandez beat Tommy Rich
Wahoo McDaniel beat Tully Blanchard
Manny Fernandez ddq Mil Mascaras
Jimmy Golden & Ken Lucas & Ricky Morton & Scott Casey beat Billy Graham & Bob Sweetan & Killer Brooks & Hacksaw Duggan
Bob Sweetan beat Ken Lucas
Billy Graham beat Jimmy Golden
Scott Casey beat Killer Brooks
Hacksaw Duggan beat Ricky Morton

The Stunning One wrote: Despite being stuck with a lame duck gimmick, what I've seen of his team with Eddie Gilbert as the new Fabs in Memphis is actually pretty good. They really were, especially in their matches w/ the PYTs.  Their falls count anywhere match at the Mid-South Coliseum was incredible.

Love the TV segment they did where they were presented with a tag team of the year award after they had quit teaming. Rich beat the shit out of Eddie, Eddie apologized and wanted to get the team back together and then he beat the shit out of Rich. They bled everywhere.
http://youtube.com/watch?v=mqHh2x4KPWMAs I mentioned in the Lance Russell thread, the fact that we don't see Eddie attack Tommy after they "reunite," just Lance's reaction, is really brilliant if it was intentional.

In retrospect, I can see your point.

Boesch used Rich quite a bit in the early 80s, and this was before most of the area had cable.
