The Sugar Bowl chose also rans Virginia Tech and Michigan over more deservin teams such as Boise and Kansas State.

No Kidding, this is a marquee BCS bowl, one of the Big 4 and they chose two half assed teams like that?

No wonder there have been calls from time to time for Congress to get involved in college football postseason in the past. This has to be one of the most boneheaded and head scratching decisions in a long long time, and has me wondering if the same type of corruption that brought down the prestige of the Fiesta Bowl isn't going on here too.

Now way there weren't under the table payoffs here,at least Ohio State's scandal was players trying to get something for nothing, not high level corruption.

Outside of the BCS Championship game, the objective of the big bowls is to sell tickets and draw viewers.  Their desire is to get "payoffs" at the turnstiles.

This. It's just common sense on the Sugar Bowls part, VA Tech and Michican both travel well, they will sell tix, Kansas State and Boise won't.

I think Kansas State travels okay, but Virginia Tech has a track record of bringing good crowds to New Orleans.  The Sugar likes to go with SEC teams, but couldn't take one here due to the two-teams-per-conference cap, so opted for another southern team to put opposite Michigan and their giant fan base.

Boise State sold out their Fiesta Bowl ticket allotments both times they made it there, and they sold all their tickets for their last two season openers, in Landover, Maryland and Atlanta, Georgia.  They have also drawn higher ratings for their BCS games than Virginia Tech has. The "Boise won't travel" stuff just isn't true.

Ratings may have been just a big a factor as if a team "travels well", and I imagine V Tech and Michigan would get larger ratings than Boise and Kansas State, and the TV Network may have "suggested" which teams they'd like to see.

Would Boise outsell Virginia Tech in New Orleans?  I can buy that they would outsell Virginia Tech in Glendale, Arizona.  I'm not a Hokie apologist, but Virginia Tech has had bad matchups in some of their Orange Bowl games against Stanford, Kansas, and Cincinnati.  Boise has been to two BCS games, but had a compelling matchup against Oklahoma in one of them.

Teams only get 17,500 tickets to sell for the Sugar Bowl. It's not a matter of out-selling, it's a matter of selling your allotment.

Apparently Sugar Bowl officials thought Virginia Tech and Michigan stood a better chance of doing that than Kansas State, Boise State, and Baylor.

Now Baylor vs. Michigan would have been a great matchup Denard vs. RG3 would have been amazing

Baylor vs Michigan would be a good game.  I have no interest in VT vs Michigan at all.  So far the only bowl I may actually watch is the Orange bowl between Stanford and Oklahoma St.  The rest just don't scream "make sure to watch" especially the national championship game

Stanford/Okie State is the Fiesta Bowl. Wisconsin/Oregon in the Rose Bowl should be pretty fun too. Hopefully the national title game doesn't end up 9-6 again....

Yeah why VT they don't have no marquee player i mean damn RG3 vs. Robinson would have probably been the most exciting bowl game

This is proof though that there are too many BCS bowls and bowls in general. When you do not have a mid-major to fill the spot (and Arkansas cannot go because of the 2 team rule) you wind up getting a matchup like this. Michigan is not the best team in their own state, they play in a horseshit conference, they're not even in the Top 10, but they get in one because they have a lot of fans.

oops I misread CNN/SI with the Orange bowl.    Wisconsin/Oregon may be a good game so I may watch it.

But honestly, looking at the bowls, there really isn't many appealing games this year.

Virginia Tech and Michigan both travel well to bowl games.  The same can be said for WVU.  Not always the best matchups for nonfans of the teams but they sell tickets, fill up hotel rooms and someone is watching.  Michigan fans would watch the End Hunger bowl in SF if Michigan was in it.

True, but any bowl game wants to get teams that will buy tickets beyond their allotments to ensure a sellout and to get as many fans as possible from the teams in question to fill local hotels, bars, restaurants, and cabs. Not speaking of any teams in particular, but a team that sells its allotment plus thousands of extra seats is more valuable than one that will only sell the allotment alone.

All Mich State had to do was win & theyd be in instead of Michigan. Michigan is still.a marquee name/program, the Sugar Bowl folks are trying to draw eyes to their game, they went w/the resurgent Michigan "big name", to draw in folks, nothing wrong with it imo. Nkce to see my Wolverines back to prominence

If this was in reverse, and Michigan State or Ohio State got the call over Michigan, you would be throwing a fit.

Nah, it worked out the way it shouldve. Ohio States playing in the shit/toilet bowl, where they belong. State blew their chance, they dont deserve to go. Amazing how "great" OSU looks now that they cant cheat ?

State BEAT Michigan, on the field, where it's supposed to count. They get penalized for making the conference title game and losing by 3 to a team that would shitstomp the Wolverines? Bunch of crap.

But, State lost their conference title game, which cost them the Rose
Bowl. Michigan has 2 losses, State has 3, so they (Michigan)go. Had State beaten Wisconsin again, no arguements they deserve to go. Wisconsin can just as easily want to play Michigan, as Mich can them. I think the Badgers got tired of getting owned by the Wolverines, so thats why they havent played them lately? Wisconsin can always put them on their 2012 schedule? Doubt that happens though.

Dewar, State also lost to ND/Neb, both teams Michigan beat, rather handily too. State ended up w 3 losses, and blew a trip to the Rose Bowl, had they beat Wisconsin, but they didnt. Plus, Michigan most likely beats Wisconsin, if they play. So, State needs to blame themselves, for blowing it, not the process.

So, you want a 3 loss team, who lost their conference champ. Game, to go over a 2 loss team, who beat BOTH Neb & ND(who State has 2 of their 3 losses against) instead? State blew their shot @ the Rose Bowl with their loss, hows that Michigans fault?

Even as a Michigan season ticket holder I agree with you. MSU was penalized for winning their division and playing in the Conf. title game. Michigan was rewarded for not being good enough to win their division.

Despite Michigan having a better record, and beating BOTH teams, that beat State.

You keep missing the point. The only reason Michigan had a better record is because Michigan State had to play an extra game. And the reason they played an extra game? They kicked Michigan's ass.

I'm a Michigan fan and I can't argue with your logic. That said, Wisconsin almost always shaves against the Wolverines no matter how favored they are.

I know what you mean Chris, but its more the system, than anything else. The analysts said Houston losing, played a role somehow in the game Mich went to. State mightve beaten -ichigan, no arguements. But , they shit the bed 3 times. The rankings are fucked up. Im sure State
losing to 2 teams that Mich beat, somehow played a role in it too?

All I can say is: State, when it counted, lost, so theyre more to blame than anyone else. They win? They go to the Rose Bowl, and Michigan gets assed out. Just so happens, Michigan sat home, and benefitted from it. Im sure itll happen again to some other team? Look at Houston, they lose 1 game, and dropped over 12 spots, and out of a BCS game.

My first thought here was "if stingy isn't defending his team to death when someone says another team is better, then even stingy probably realizes what the other guy is saying is true."

But State isnt better, thats why theyre not in a bcs game. Mich needed a few things to happen to go, they happened, theyre going. State blew their bcs game, Mich happened to reap the rewards. Win your conference title, this discussion never occurs. The bcs folks didnt think State was better, and voted appropriately. Blame the bcs/system.

Meeeeechegan didn't even win their DIVISION. They got rewarded for failure. Wisconsin did their dirty work for them.

State beat them and finished ahead of them in the standings. In what way are they not better?

And yes, this is another example of why the system sucks.

They did? State LOST their last game, and is 10-3, while Meecheegan is 10-2....Michigan went to the Sugar Bowl b/c of it......Michigan also beat ND and NEB, who State lost to(ND/Neb/Wisconsin...3 losses). Michigan finished AHEAD of MSU......w/one less loss

State beats Wisconsin? they go to the Rose bowl...guess who didnt win their conference title?

We wont know, since they didnt play each other.

Along with Houston and another team.

Shit who cares about the Big 10 teams anyways. The only more boring football to watch is the Sunbelt.

Then that's some pretty twisted and diseased logic that a team can actually be rewarded for NOT making the conference title game. Which doesn't, by the way, affect the Big Ten standings. MSU still finished ahead of Michigan--if they hadn't, they wouldn't have been playing in the CCG.

Then the folks who voted Michigan into a bcs game, over MSU, should be the folks you need to direct any anger towards, THEY felt MSU wasnt worthy enough apparently, despite a 10-3 team being ranked higher than a 10-2 team. (which has been what Ive said for awhile now) blame the system. State blew it, Another team, benefitted from it, simple really. AGAIN, MSU wins, none of this matters. I dont "get" how its so hard to understancd any of that? Is it right? Probably not, but blame THE SYSTEM. Michigan got rewarded b/c another team didnt get the job done. Not the only time its happened, wont be the last Im sure. Wisconsin can just as easily put Mich back on their schedule, and vice versa. Doesnt help States case, that they lost to ND/NEB, and Michigan, beat both. STOP blaming MICH, for someone elses fuck up. If it happened to your favorite team, ill bet you wouldnt have a problem w/it? Mich needed help, and got it, how is that their fault? State/Houston didnt win, Mich goes b/c of it. Bottom. Line: win ALL your games, and you dont have to worry about anything else. They didnt do that, simple. The systems broken, it needs fixing, stuff like this wont happen then.

Hey man, my Rajin Cajuns went 9-3 and made their first Bowl game in several decades! Averaged over 29,000 a game at home, too. I remember when they were lucky to have 5,000.

The fact that they took the Michigan and VTech over Boise and K state, two school that were ranked higher than both teams shows you there's no point in being a better team because it doesn't matter. You take 2nd tier teams over ones ranked higher ones. Bill Snyder finished 2nd in the Big 12 and is ranked than Michigan and VTehch in every poll. How do you tell him that he should be happy a shittier Michigan goes to a BCS bowl?

I agree...it's the SYSTEM thats fucked up. How does Miami win a nt one year, with a loss, and others w/no losses dont? How do teams 'tie' for a title? makes no sense. Michigan, happened to benefit from both State & Houston losing9and I *think* one or 2 other things happening).

Wisconsin is in no hurry to ever put Michigan back on their schedule....no offense to Dewar, but Wisconsins .227 w/l percentage, and their 10-49 record against Mich h2h, should be MAJOR reasons for that. Michigan, flat out owns Wisconsin, and Wisconsin doesnt want to risk getting embarrassed again, and possibly going to a shitty bowl game, to play Michigan anytime soon. (PS, Chris, the last four wins Wiscinsin has, against Mich, still doesnt erase Michigans dominance over them, WI sucks against Mich overall, and their w/l record proves that).

BTW, State, as great as many claim them to be, couldnt score but 3 points against Neb, yet Michigan demolishes them, and only lost to State by 2 td's. State's been lucky. When it came time for them to prove how great they were, they came up short.

Why do you keep saying Wisconsin has the power to decide whether or not it plays Michigan, or any other Big 10 team. That's not how it works. There is a rotation that is followed for non-division, non-rivalry games. Wisconsin just doesn't cherry-pick its Big 10 opponents.

I'm not sure what Michigan being able to steamroll Wisconsin in 1967 has to do with today. For the past decade, Wisconsin has been the better program.

Not in Conference. There is a set Conference rotation. The teams do schedule their own NON-conference games, however. Wisconsin can't schedule Michigan if it's not on the Conference slate for that year.

But, WAY behind Mich, who has 42 conference titles.

Theyve actually beaten Michigan currently 3 in a row, as Mich beat them in 08.

Michigans won the most big ten conf. Titles w/13.....:D:X

The Minnesota Golden Gophers won two national titles back in the day too. Guess that makes them better than Boise State and Oklahoma State this year.

I realize that Wisconsin does not, and cannot, pick which Big 10 teams it plays each year. Do you?
