70-71  Koloff loses to Bruno, beats some mid-carders, then beats Bruno. then loses to Pedro

75-76  Koloff has a GREAT three match series with Bruno at MSG, loses the blowoff cage match THEN teams with Superstar Billy Graham for some high-profile tag matches, he winds up the stint with some co-features against Ivan Putski and other top-tier talent

1978  Koloff has a two match MSG series and around the horn with Backlund- I always though these matches were underrated- Bob and Ivan worked well together- he then does some mid-card work against the likes of Dino Bravo and Tony Garea and then some co-features with BRUNO (anyone ever see one of these?)

my favorite Koloff run is 1975-1976, maybe the greatest two-year span in WWWF history- if you include 1977 maybe the greatest three years of any federation-

the reason I am even on this board

Believe it or not yeah, because it's the one I saw as it happened - the others predated my fandom

I saw the '78 series at Boston Garden but I still like '75 better-  I like the BIG Ivan before the late 70s-early 80s trimmed-down look-  that applies to Putski and Patera too

The 1970-1971 run was interesting. Before Koloff got his 1/71 MSG shot against Bruno, he had beaten in succession on the 3 previous MSG shows Bill Miller, Gorilla Monsoon, and one of Bruno's thousands of pisans Tony Marino. Earlier in 1970 they had saturated the circuit with Bruno/Koloff matches which played in virtually every and "A" and "B" arena the WWWF ran. To bring a heel back on top in such a short turnaround time speaks volumes of how well Koloff was regarded. The guy was a state of the art heel.

On the other hand I think the 1975 run had more to do with Bruno than Koloff and I'll tell ya why. 1975 was arguably Bruno's single greatest year as a pro. He had just finished a great run with Bobby Duncum at MSG in '74. Duncum was a new, fresh opponent and their matches were dynamite. Starting out in '75, he continued the run with Duncum in Boston and Philly. He had what I consider his single best MSG run with a three-peat at MSG against Spiros Arion. He had a 46 minute curfew draw at MSG with Steele, and a fair series of matches with Waldo Von Erich. While the MSG matches with Koloff were all superb, (including the first cage match ever held at the Garden), Ivan got no buildup and was thrust straight into the main event even though he had been gone for 4 years. The matches with Bruno were great, but his stuff with Putski was held down by him being in there with Putski, and the Graham team never ascended to the the tag straps.

The Koloff/Bruno encounter at MSG on 3/79 is circulated.  I haven't seen any other matches with Bruno during this time period.

I don't remember Koloff beating Bruno but would geek like crazy if they showed that TV show on 24-7 where they bring out Koloff as the new champion.

The 1980 run vs Backlund was great though. Koloff (because he had beaten Bruno before) had that "he can beat Backlund too" feeling about him.
