I would jump for joy if that scenario happened. I'm a Hawks fan but think they are a first round out unless Toews miraculously recovers from his concession. Since I don't think the Hawks can win the Cup, I'm rooting against Vancouver.

Damn i did a pool last night and took Toews with a late pick...I assumed he would be back for the playoffs.

He could be, but most of us think if it happens it would have to be later in a playoff run.

cool, thanks. I think they can get by Phoenix anyway - also took Kane and Hossa. I hope they end up playing Vancouver, and eliminate those pricks.

It's a tough series to call. Nashville is going for it all this season. This is the best chance they will ever have to win the Stanley Cup. Detroit's best three players Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Lidstrom are aging. Pavel & Lidstrom coming off injuries too. Detroit has a few other guys banged up as well. I like Detroit to win despite their injuries and aging players. Logic says otherwise. Rinne is a better goalie than Jimmy Howard.

Toews shouldn't be playing. The Hawks are not going to win the Stanley Cup this season. Why take the chance of getting him hurt worse than he already is?

Games 1 and 3 will be available to those viewers in Ontario that have access to CHEX. F*cking CBC would rather show the Senators on a National basis instead of the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Trust me - there are more Bruin fans west of Ontario than there are Senators fans.

Nashville 3 Detroit 2. Shea Weber might get suspended for a few games for his cheap shot on Zetterberg as the game ended.

What? As long as Kenny Holland is their GM, they'll be fine. I dont worry about the Wings too much anymore.

It's the Playoffs for Pete's sake - Weber might get a $ 2,500 fine ( the max allowed by the NHLPA ) but he will not miss a shift. You Red Wings fans need to toughen up - Gordie Howe would be ashamed of your whining.

When Steve fucking Yzerman posts on his fb page that hes lost all respect for Weber, its more than "whining" imo. Besides that, what was that hit for? Was he that afraid of Zetty? Sometimes I wish Joey & Bob were still on the team.

And Bob, you know damn well youd be here whining and more if it happened to one of your Bruins.

OK - a couple of things:

- Steve fucking Yzerman should be worrying about his own team instead of what's going on between Detroit and Nashville. You know - the team that finished 21st overall in a 30 team league. Besides - if Yzerman didn't say anything about the hit or said that it was OK would you still be bitching and moaning about it ????
- that hit was for the rest of the series just like every check that Kronwall and every other Detroit player made tonight.
- if it happened to a Bruin player ( and can you please try to name another team in the NHL that has been hurt more than the Boston Bruins by head shots over the last few years ) I'd be upset about it but there's no use whining about it. F*ck it - go to Nashville and take it out on Weber just don't ask me to bail your Red Wing lovin' ass out of jail.

Lol, show me ANYWHERE where I "bitched & moaned about it", please? I agreed w/Sin & YOU got butthurt about it apparently. Cmon Bob, show me. I then mentioned that Yzerman said something, and you got butthurt. I then simply asked what was the point of the hit on Zetterberg, as Im not the only one who apparently didnt like the hit & YOU take that as "bitching & moaning"? Lol, a question asked about a hit somehow equates to "bitching & moaning"? Ok.

I dont care where they finished, I didnt expect the Wings to go far in the playoffs anyways. Stop being so butthurt:tongue::tongue::tongue:

Refs had a rough night last night. The first Philly goal was SO offside, and that got them back in the game. No excuses for Pitt, they should have shut them down but that was a turning point.
Full marks to Briere for an amazing looking goal (i love scoring that same goal in pick up hockey) and then and then screaming "Fu*kin' right!" right afterwards.
Go Pitt!

Really enjoyed the two early games last night as I flipped back and forth between them. I had to get up too early this morning to watch the LA-Van game though.

I also was looking forward to watching the CSNBC feed of the Detroit-Nashville game last night, but right at the top of the hour when the game was to start they flipped over to the CNBC World feed which obviously wasn't showing the game. I should have known that was going to happen due to the Canadian broadcaster's (CBC, TSN) rights to show the games in Canada. They do though show the  games that play on the main NBC network during the weekends and during the Finals...Or at least they always have and better continue this year. I enjoy watching the U.S. commentators a lot as it gives me a break from the Canadian ones which if there is a Canadian team in the series, is all..."Rah, Rah, Rah, Go Canada, Go Canucks, Go Sens." Blah. Even with The Leafs not in the playoffs they'll still talk about that damn team ad-nauseum. You can see why I like the Yank commentators now. I must say though I prefer The Canadian camerawork and broadcasts overall...Way better than the U.S. versions when it comes to hockey. Too bad I couldn't wtach the Canadian feed of the game with the U.S. commentators dubbed over it. maybe I'll try it tonight with two T.V.'s but I'd imagine there will be a delay of a few seconds between both feeds.

Games 1 and 3 will be available to those viewers in Ontario that have access to CHEX. F*cking CBC would rather show the Senators on a National basis instead of the defending Stanley Cup Champions. Trust me - there are more Bruin fans west of Ontario than there are Senators fans.

So I get to watch the defending Stanley Cup Champions begin the long trek to defending their Championship on a live video stream on the CBC site. I finally got back the expected BS response to my e-mail.

My E-Mail to CBC Sports

It has just come to my attention that due to a scheduling conflict with the Ottawa vs New York series that Games 1 and 3 of the Boston versus Washington series will not air on CBC. You do realize that Boston is the defending Stanley Cup Champion and that Washington has one of the NHL's highest profile players on its roster ????  I fully understand that there is pressure on CBC to showcase Canadian teams but unless this somehow gets fixed there will be a lot of upset Canadian hockey fans. Trust me - there are many more Boston Bruin fans west of Ontario then there are Ottawa Senators fans. Please let me know if a solution to this problem can be reached.

Response from CBC

Thank you for your recent emails to CBC Sports concerning the
distribution of Round One games of the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs on CBC
Television stations across Canada.

During the first round of the playoffs when there are many more
matchups than the later rounds, there are often conflicts when two or
more games to which CBC Sports holds television broadcast rights are
scheduled to be played at the same time. As it is not physically
possible to transmit two games simultaneously fully across the country,
we must decide how to make both games accessible to as many of our
viewers as possible, keeping in mind that our first priority, as
Canada's national public broadcaster, is to make availagble those series
that include Canadian teams to as many of our audience members as possible.

In this case, we decided to broadcast the Senators/Rangers game across
our network and live stream on CBCSports.ca and to air games 1 and 3 of
the Boston/Washington series on one of our affiliate stations, CHEX as
well as live stream on CBCSports.ca. Although CHEX is an affiliate
station, it is available on a wide number of cable and satellite
services, which is the means by which the overwhelming majority of our
viewers receive their CBC Television signal.

We do recognize that CHEX is not available to all viewers across the
country. And we do realize your own frustration with this situation,
however, we believe this was the best possible solution to a problem
that defies a perfect answer. We hope this information has been helpful
and thank you for contacting CBC.

What did you expect?  With only 2 out of 7 Canadian teams in the playoffs they damned well better play the Sens game nationally.

You should really be mad at TSN, they get to pick 3rd and 4th series after CBC does, they didn't deem Boston Washington to be as big as Pitt/Philly.

Actually the pecking order went CBC, CBC, TSN, CBC, TSN, CBC, TSN and TSN. I was hoping they might do a swap like last year ( the Boston vs Philly series was split between CBC and TSN ) but TSN2 is airing their own TSN Skins Curling thing tonight so that isn't an option. So yes - my anger is aimed straight at the CBC for not thinking far enough ahead to realize that there was going to be a lot of backlash about their scheduling decision and that they needed to come up with a better solution then they eventually came up with.

I haven't heard any backlash besides yours, I assume Bruins fans are upset.  I couldn't care less about the Bruins/Caps series though, would rather see Sens/Rags.

If Shanahan doesn't suspend him I'm flying to Nashville and putting him out for the next 3 games. Stingmark, you in?

Sure..........

If you are just fucking with Stingmark fine, but you can't compare grabbing a player by the helmet and ramming his head into the glass when the game is over to a legal hit by Nick Kronwall.

Seriously, the league has suspended players for targeting the head on checks, but grabbing a guy by the helmet with two hands and banging his head into the glass is OK.

You are going to have to work a hell of a lot harder to convince me that was OK.

At least on a check you could convince me you were trying to make a clean hit and the guy moved or ducked his head, or you misjudged the impact point, but the only intent of Shea Webber was to injure Zetterberg. There was no attempt to make a hockey play, especially since the game was over.

I'm not trying to be a homer, but how is this different than McSorley on Brashear? The player used a foreign object to smash another player's skull. It is far worse than Bertuzzi on Martin. $2500? Shit that's the table stake at my local poker game. Wow! Just Wow!

OK - I'm gonna be 100 % honest with you here. Based on what I saw yesterday I really did think you were being a homer and whining about nothing really significant. But I saw a couple of better angles of the incident today and it was pretty bad. I'm still not sure it was suspension worthy but being penalized $ 2,500 ( which the team will likely pay or at least pay him back ) is laughable.

The game was over. By rule if it was a punch, which right or wrong is a hockey play, it should have been a suspension. To me this was worse. The only intent was to cause a head injury. The league claims to be targeting players that target the head, except in this incident.

That's what I think is shocking. You can't claim you are protecting your players from head injuries, and then allow a guy to ram a guy's head into the turnbuckle. This is not even mentioning Webber tried to punch his head into the glass, but missed and then went for the two handed head smash.

Results like that make it very difficult to stay up until 1:00 am and then get up for work at 5 am.

Hawks played decently but a few large brain farts hurt them bad. Hawks really need the next game as a 2-0 lead is very difficult to overcome even going home for two games.

Holy fuck! Fisher just hit Franzen in the face with a crosscheck and then punched him in the face bloodying his eye, lip, and nose, and Franzen got a two minute penalty.

Bertuzzi fought Webber about a minute into the game. It wasn't much of a fight.

The Wings killed a penalty. Then got called for another immediately. While trying to kill the second penalty Kronwall shot the puck over the glass making it a 5 on 3. Seconds into the 5 on 3 Kyle Quincey's stick broke, and the Wings basically had to kill 30 seconds of penalty time 5 vs. 2.

It was pretty nerve-wracking there for roughly 5 and a half minutes.

I thought it was pretty funny - until I heard that those panes of glass weigh about 120 lbs.

2 Flyers with hat tricks. 1 of them is considered to be a defensive specialist. They even called a penalty on Crysby. Couldn't believe it.

Couturier is only 19 and is the best Defensive Foward on the team. He would've been the #1 overall pick in the Draft last year, if He didn't get Mono last season.

Because of salary cap hell, it's amazing how many good players the Hawks have lost the last few years. Troy Brouwer listed above, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, Brian Campbell, Big Buf, John Madden just to name a few.

Caps 1 Bruins 0 at the end of the second period.

Chicago picked up a 2011 1st round pick ( 26th overall ) from Washington for Brouwer which is a nice return for a guy with a career high of 40 points.

Only if the draft pick develops into a good player. We'll see during the next few years how well Stan Bowman can draft.

Pouliot scored for Boston. Maybe you're looking into the future and Marchand will score the OT winner. If there is a clawmaster curse could you please start cheering for Washington.

I think the Flyers are 6 for 10 or 6 for 11 on the PP, with 3 SHG in this series.

Asham will get at least 3 games, and Neal should get 1-2 games for his 2 Hits in the 3rd period. It's a good thing that it wasn't the Flyers that were going nuts out there. The National Media would be all of this if so.

That elbow had serious intentions, and I am a Blueshirt fan (yes, I struggle with the Dolans as you know). I didn't see the Weber hit but I wondered what the repercussions would be as soon as Hagelin hit him.

What the fuck is with Gaborik? I watched the entire game last night and didn't see a shot. So I wondered if he was really on the ice. I check the box score and he has ZERO shots.

That's a method for success for a defensive-oriented team! Let your only 40-goal scorer get shutout on shots!

I think Ottawa did a good job of getting under the Rangers skin the entire game.  They took Gaborik out by getting chippy and thugging it up.  Dubi got kicked out in the beginning of the game on a bullshit call.  They also benefitted from 2 of the luckiest goals I've ever seen.  That game should've been 2-0.  DelZotto kicked a goal into his own net past Hank on a5 minute major, and the 2nd goal squirted through Staal's block attempt right to the guy on Ottawa cutting through the net.

My brother said he was surprised at how dirty Ottawa was and that King lets too many soft goals through. I agree on the latter but the former, I think we'll rectify by the end of the series. Just my opinion.

They've got to get Gaborik loose. I have to believe that Torts will have something to accomplish that.

Henrik did not let any soft goals in yesterday.  he 1st one was Del Zotto's fault.  The 2nd one was a lucky bounce to Karlsson.  The 3rd one, he had his stick knoced out of his game.  Ottawa krpt making contact with him in the crease, and the refs swallowed the whistle.  I really am surprised that the Rangers didn't take more penalties than they did, because if my goalie gets knocked around in the crease like that, someone on the other team is leaving with a concussion.

Weber tried to punch Zetterberg in the back of the head but missed, so he grabbed Zetterberg by the helmet with both hands and slammed his head into the glass hard enough that Zetterberg's helmet broke in two places. The game was over, so he never even had to serve a penalty minute.

Game three was different. Sid seemed to completely lose his shit, which is a far cry from his regular behavior. Plus the team followed his example, especially James Neal going headhunting late in the game.

I haven't seen a team come unglued like the Pens have in a very long time.

If Hagelin got three, Weber should have got at least that many. Shanabans have no consistency, meaning it's turned into "meet the old boss, same as the new boss" for suspensions again.

Another example of this will happen later today. Milan Lucic did not get suspended for his hit on Ryan Miller during the season, but I thinK Andrew Shaw gets a game off today for doing something similar to Mike Smith on Saturday night.

Asham will get at least 3 games, and Neal should get 1-2 games for his 2 Hits in the 3rd period. It's a good thing that it wasn't the Flyers that were going nuts out there. The National Media would be all of this if so.

I do find it funny that the Pens trying to end careers has been so underplayed. The theory is that Neal won't get any suspension because 2 other Pens will be suspended and it wouldn't be "fair".

Just wait 10 years from now for the class action suit for concussions. Neal's head hunting will be exhibit A on how the NHL really didn't take that shit seriously. Within a span of just a few minutes he tried to end a couple of guys including the Flyers best player and the Flyers best player in the series. Drop the gloves and fight. No problem. The head hunting though has to stop.

Further, Neal is putting Crosby at risk. Say the Flyers are up or down by a large margin in game 4. If the Pens start any shit, it wouldn't take much for the Flyers to send one of the non-skilled players after Crosby but with a stick to the head in retaliation. There won't be time for another Pen to step and rabbit punch someone in the head 8 times.

A bunch of fucking pussies.

I just found out that Backstrom picked up a 10 minute match penalty at the end of the Boston vs Washington game which should mean that he is automatically supended for Game 4. I guarandamntee you that the misconduct will be rescinded and that Backstrom will end up scoring or setting up the Game 4 winning goal.

Hush your mouth... you better not have jinxed them CH!!!! Watching the coaches press remarks on the NHL Channel and Dale Hunter was asked and he thinks the league should rescind the call at the end of the game.

I thought that the Caps should have gotten a 3rd man in penalty when Lucic drew the double minor at the end to give the Caps a power play, but thankfully the B's held strong at the end.

I just read this article with Shanaban  that I found interesting... I may not agree with all his decisions, but I have to give him credit. IMO, he has talked often about why he has decided the way he has.

**********************************************

Brendan Shanahan has become the most controversial figure of the 2012 Stanley Cup Playoffs, to the point where some pundits and fans have accused the Department of Player Safety of everything from playing favorites to being the catalyst for chaotic displays like the one in Game 3 between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Philadelphia Flyers. Shanahan's taken heat for not suspending Shea Weber after the Nashville Predators defenseman bashed the head of Henrik Zetterberg into the glass in Game 1; for only giving Ottawa Senators ruffian Matt Carkner a 1-game suspension for attacking Brian Boyle; and, giving Carl Hagelin of the New York Rangers three games for his elbow to the head of Daniel Alfredsson, who now has a concussion.
It only gets rougher: Andrew Shaw has a hearing regarding his collision with Phoenix Coyotes goalie Mike Smith on Monday; Nick Kypreos of Sportsnet reports that James Neal of the Pittsburgh Penguins will have two separate hearings for running Sean Couturier and Claude Giroux at the end of Game 3; and, Arron Asham will have an in-person hearing for cross-checking Brayden Schenn to the neck — expect a massive ban on that one.
That's where Shanahan's going; but what about the decisions he's made?
The NHL player safety czar joined the "Boomer and Carton" show on WFAN in New York this morning and revealed several things, including:
• He considered giving Shea Weber a 1-game suspension, but Zetterberg's lack of injury kept it at a fine.
• Carkner asked Boyle to fight off the faceoff, and that the location of many of the punches when Boyle was on the ice (i.e. not the head) contributed to the NHL's decision.
• Hagelin was given one more game that Byron Bitz's suspension because an elbow to the head is more egregious than a shoulder.
• Daniel Alfredsson suffered a concussion, according to Shanahan; the Senators reported on Monday that he passes a baseline test.
Choice cuts from the interview coming up; hear the whole thing here.
On the Shea Weber fine, rather than a suspension:
"I looked at that one, and I'm not happy with that play. I'll say on the bigger picture too: If I made a decision that people didn't agree with, or a day or two later, you got that one wrong, a week later they'd try to hold me to that standard and question by consistency if I move forward.
"The playoffs evolve. The game evolves. I have to try and keep evolving with them. It's not like the regular season where every team has 82 games to play, and there's equal footing. They change depending on the score of the series or how many games are left in the series.
"I investigated that hit. I called Detroit that night. I think that he pushed his face in the glass. I was very close to a 1-game suspension on that. When I talked to Detroit [GM Ken Holland], he basically said that the player was fine.
"I think it's a fair argument. A $2,500 fine is as high as we can fine a player."
On Carkner getting one game, and Hagelin getting three:
"I think they're different plays. The difference between the two, right off the hop, is that there's a head injury and concussion on one and there's no injury on the other. Now, that doesn't mean one guy gets off and the other guy doesn't.
"But when we looked at the play between Carkner and Boyle, Carkner asks Boyle to fight in response to going after their small star player in the game before. [Ed. Note: Shanahan said Carkner asked Boyle to fight off the faceoff.] Boyle doesn't fight back, which I don't blame him — I probably wouldn't have either. He does hit 'em in the face, he drops 'em. As was said to us in the hearing, he hit him with five more punches, and they were in the arm, shoulder and back — not in the head. But he thought that was excessive.
"So Boyle stands up, is fine, doesn't miss a shift. Whereas unfortunately with an elbow to the head … I do think Carl Hagelin's a good kid, but he looks right at Daniel Alfredsson, skates at him and elbows him right in the head. Alfredsson has to leave a big game, an important game and doesn't come back."
Could Alfredsson come back to play in the series?
"I think that's a possibility," said Shanahan. "Usually when I deal with a report from the team doctor, most of these guys say — and what Ottawa said to me — is that it could be one day or it could be one year. You just don't know [about concussions].
"I think it's very clear, at the very least, that he's not faking, or else he would have come back and played on that [5 minute] power play they were given. Whether he's back tonight or back later in the week, we just don't know. I made the call based on [the fact] that there was an injury."
"It's not all based on the injury, but the injury is a contributing factor," said Shanahan. "I'm not hoping that Alfredsson is out for the rest the series. I'm hoping he's back next game."
Shanahan later said the Senators indicated Alfredsson "could return" in the series and "I did not make this decision based on [the notion] that Alfredsson is done for the series." Which it appears he will.
On suspending to the injury:
"We really compared the Hagelin play to the suspension two days ago to Byron Bitz for the hit on Kyle Clifford, which was for a shoulder to the head. We felt that an elbow to the head was more deliberate, it caused an injury, and that's why we went from two games to three."
Shanahan later said: "It's a contributing factor. It's not the whole factor," and that it's been negotiated into the CBA well before he took the job that injuries would play a role.
FYI: Chris Phillips didn't throw an elbow at Ryan Callahan's head, in the estimation of the Department of Player Safety. "It's not remotely the same degree [as the Hagelin hit]."

It's supposed to be an automatic 1 game suspension but the league can ( and probably will ) rescind the penalty so it's like it never happened. The hearing is taking place today at 3:30 pm Eastern so we will know pretty soon.

No penalty on Torres. The refs and linesmen missed it. Shanny will suspend Torres though.

Torres will be gone for a good long while, the hit was one where it was too bang bang to say it was dirty or clean as it happened.  After being able to see it on replay, it was dirty as fuck, he jumped, hit Hossa in the head, BRUTAL.  Torres has always been a stupid gronk.

I watched some coverage on the NBC Sports Channel  (or whatever they call it now) at the bar after my shift tonight, and Jeremy Roenick must have pointed out 5-6 times that in his day it would be a legal hit, that he left his feet  to hit guys and others hit him leaving their feet...It was so obnoxious that he kept saying it and almost trying to justify the hit that I thought it looked like at one point Mike Milbury was going to hit Jeremy with his shoe and say that's how it was done in his day.

The referees all missed it. Now that it would have mattered. The Hawks were fortunate to even make the playoffs.

Torres will get hit hard..I think. Who knows what Shanahan is thinking these days? Andrew Shaw got 3 games for a hit that was embellished by Mike Smith like he was a soccer player, and one he came back from and did not miss any playing time. Aaron Asham is a repeat offender that cross-checked a guy in the face and then tried to punch him while he was down and out. He only got 4 games.

If Asham's = 4 games, Shaws should have = 1 game. But again, I don't know WTF Shanahan is thinking when doling these out anymore. If he gives Torres only a couple of games, I will be angry but not shocked.

Ended 10-3. Flyers up 3 to 1 in series. If any hockey team is capable of coming back from a 3 -0 game deficit, it's Pittsburgh.

Freaking Senators. They WERE my favorite Canadian franchise before this series with The Rangers. Now I utterly despise them.

If Asham's = 4 games, Shaws should have = 1 game. But again, I don't know WTF Shanahan is thinking when doling these out anymore. If he gives Torres only a couple of games, I will be angry but not shocked.

And this will be be Torres' second suspension right? And that last one was like 5 games right? If I'm remembering right we probably won't see him until next season.

I'd like to think so but who really knows? Asham's been suspended a couple of times too and he only got 4 games.

We'll see friday, I guess.

After selling like Ricky Morton this whole period to try and draw a penalty, the Caps get a Power Play goal late in the 2nd Period to take the lead 2-1

Holtby is playing a great game for the Caps, who are still leading 2-1 late in the 3rd... little over 5 minutes left.

Capitals hold on and get the win 2-1 to tie the series at 2 games a piece. Holtby makes  a Big Save in last second.

:X

I thought the game would be as chippy and hard hitting as game 3, but it wasn't, much to Washington's advantage IMO.

Oduya sucks balls. We can only hope the Hawks GM Stan Bowman notices that before he re-signs him to a 4 year, 16 million dollar deal. Bowman seems to ahve a chub for him since he traded for him.

I had a feeling LA would catch someone napping this year. They looked like a team last year that was on the brink of having something good going on. Add to the mix that Vancouver seemed to be going in to the playoffs on autopilot, and the stage was set for a 1-8 upset.

Since Crawford let in two Leaf-goalie-like goals in OT, do the Hawks consider putting in Emery?

Quite possibly. The softness of two consecutive overtime goals against demands a change be made, I think.

Big game tomorrow in Boston and it will go a long way in determining if there will be a repeat Stanley Cup Champion this year. On one hand I'm really disappointed in the Bruins being tied up after 4 games but on the other hand it sounds pretty good when you consider that 4 of their top 6 forwards ( Krejci, Lucic, Seguin and Marchand ) have been held pointless so far. I'm not sure what the lines will look like for Game 5 but apparently Julien had Seguin practicing on the 3rd line and Marchand on the 4th line the last 2 days. My prediction is that Seguin scores a couple of goals and Boston wins 4 to 1.

Ottawa leads the Rangers 1-0  early in the 2nd on NBC Sports channel , while the Panthers lead the Devils on the NHL channel 1-0 after 2.

That's why the NHL playoffs are unpredictable. New Jersey is a better team than Florida and Boston is a better team than Washington. But it's the NHL playoffs. You never know sometimes.

You took ANOTHER team & not Detroit, same thing.(If you wanted them to win, you wouldve taken them to win the series, but you didnt) I put a hex on them.

Your Bruins will suffer the same fate as my Wings, and itll probably be another 40-50 yrs before they win another cup.

Never in doubt for the Bruins. Despite stingmark's " curse " we now stand at 3 down and 13 to go. By the way - if you want to see the perfect definition of a guy that really doesn't care then just watch Ovechkin's effort on Seguin's OT goal. He skated back into his own zone about as hard as a Dad would do playing pond hockey with his 6 year old kid.

Giroux had a great series, but let's not get carried away with this BEST IN THE WORLD stuff.

It's only one round of games. Let's see Giroux leads the Flyers to a Stanley Cup finals victory. Wayne Gretsky had tremendous stats but he also led the Oilers to multiple Cup Final victories. True greatness was, is and always will be measured by individual accomplishments but also by post season success.

That being said. We are in different era of hockey. I saw some stat before the playoffs started that 9 different teams had won the Cup in the last 9 seasons. No team had two Cup Final victories during the past nine years. We often whine about parity in the NFL but it exists in the modern NHL as well.

There's a reason Hunter isn't playing him much in the third periods of this series. He hasn't really given a fuck all season, no reason to start now.

No team had two Cup Final victories during the past nine years. We often whine about parity in the NFL but it exists in the modern NHL as well.

Actually it's eight because of the strike.

2003 New Jersey
2004 Tampa Bay
2005 Cancelled due to strike
2006 Carolina
2007 Anaheim
2008 Detroit
2009 Pittsburgh
2010 Chicago
2011 Boston

So if you believe in trends,

Philly, Florida & Nashville are good bets because they've already won their first round series. Tampa, Carolina & Anaheim didn't make the playoffs. Jersey, Detroit & Pittsburgh already out. Trend not kind to Boston or Chicago.

I'd be fine with St. Louis winning the Cup. I don't have even near the same amount of hate for them as I did in the mid to late 80s. Nobody expected St. Louis to be as good as they are. I haven't had the time to start hating them again. I'm sure it will come eventually.

I can hate them easily.  They are a Boston team, which means auto hatred, much like the Red Sox, Patriots.  Fortunately the Celtics are to old to hate, because its not PC to hate old people  :)

Ron Artest thanks the Kings for taking some degree of attention away from what an unstable shitheel he is.  LA is now a hockey town, for a few days anyway, until the NBA playoffs actually start.

Tonight The Ottawa Senators try to close out the New York Rangers and The Phoenix Coyotes try to close out the Chicago Black Hawks. I'll be back during the Hawks game to provide coverage.

I cannot believe how dirty Ottawa is, and the refs refuse to call anything.  I am rooting for a team that not only can't score, but is playing against the Sens and the refs.

Did you guys think Ottawa's last goal was kicked in?  It looked like he missed the puck with the kick, but the puck sped up, so it would seem he did kick it just enough to push it in.

That sounds shocking on the surface but this is a new era for the NHL. As I pointed out earlier in the thread, a different team wins the Cup every year. St. Louis was great during the regular season. I'd expect some major changes in San Jose during the off season.  Nashville has Rinne and made some upgrades to their team during the season. It's the all in year for Nashville. They'll never have as good of a chance to win the Cup as they do this year. Phoenix beating The Hawks was not a surprise especially with Hossa going down. Even with Hossa, The Hawks still would have lost. Mike Smith outplayed Corey Crawford. That was the series in a nut shell. I'm not a big Kings fan other than liking their goalie Quick. Vancouver seems to have a jinx on themselves. Last year should have been their year but we all know how Bobby Lu choked it away in game 7 of the finals. Do you still have that Bobby Lu photoshop pic? The most famous man in the world pic? Now would be a great time to break it out.

Big Game 7 today in Boston and it's time for the Champs to put away those pesky Capitals. According to the Elias Sports Bureau this is the first time in NHL history that the first 6 games of a series have all been decided by one goal. Hopefully Boston's top line ( Krejci, Lucic and Seguin ) can stay hot as they picked up a combined 6 points in Game 6. Here are the lineups for today's game:

Bruins Lines
Milan Lucic - David Krejci - Tyler Seguin

Brad Marchand - Patrice Bergeron - Rich Peverley
Benoit Pouliot - Chris Kelly -
Brian Rolston
Daniel Paille - Gregory Campbell - Jordan Caron

Zdeno Chara - Dennis Seidenberg
Johnny Boychuk - Andrew Ference
Greg Zanon - Mike Mottau

Tim Thomas

Tuukka Rask

Washington's Lines
Alex Ovechkin - Brooks Laich - Troy Brouwer
Marcus Johansson
- Nicklas Backstrom - Alex Semin
Matt Hendricks - Jay Beagle -
Jason Chimera

Mike Knuble - Keith Aucoin - Joel Ward

Karl Alzner - John Carlson
Roman Hamrlik - Mike Green
Jeff Schultz - Dennis Wideman

Braden Holtby
Michal Neuvirth

WARNING: Homer Pick Ahead

I predict that Boston scores early in the game and wins by a 5 to 2 score. The top line for Boston will again dominate and score 4 of Boston's goals.

Joel Ward's goal resulted in racial slurs. This from the Huffington Post......

While Joel Ward's series-winning overtime goal in Game 7 had Capitals fans celebrating in D.C., it sparked a backlash of racist reactions on Twitter.

WARNING: UNCENSORED TWEETS BELOW

A Canadian born to parents who emigrated from Barbados, Ward's compelling personal story and hard-earned rise to the NHL should make him easy to root for. However, the color of his skin was all that some people could see after he put the puck past Boston netminder Tim Thomas in the extra session. After that series-winning goal during overtime in Game 7, a small but vulgar group vented its anger on Twitter, using the N-word to refer to the Caps' hero. Below is a small sample of the hateful things being said on Twitter.

for more ...............

I am not entirely sure how the Rangers let that go 7 games, but I hope to hell they don't do it again. That team is not built for 28 games to the cup. Hank can only stand on his head so many times.

I'm not sure what they are built for.  They are a pretty young team for the most part.  They don't have a lot of scoring but they play strong defense, block a ton of shots have a great goaltender, and are comfortable playing 1 goal games.

Hopefully, one of these young guys like Hagelin or Kreider can step up and be that complimentary scorer to Gaborik.

CAPS even the series with the Rangers 1-1 thanks to OV's late power play goal.

After watching his Predators come out flat and fall in a 2-0 hole against the Phoenix Coyotes on Sunday, Barry Trotz said there could be lineup changes for Game 3.

He wasn't kidding.

The team announced Tuesday that wingers Alexander Radulov and Andrei Kostitsyn would not play in Game 3 for violating team rules.

"“The Nashville Predators have a few simple rules centered around doing the right things,” GM David Poile said in a team release. “We have always operated with a team-first mentality and philosophy. Violating team rules is not fair to our team and their teammates.”

What exactly the players did isn't clear, but Radulov has been demonstrably terrible so far in the series and was on the receiving end of a blistering critique by NBC Sports analyst Keith Jones after Game 2.

Trotz on Monday said Radulov "absolutely" deserved the criticism, which included several examples of lackadaisical, lazy play.

“I know Rad took a lot from the NBC crew, but there are a lot of guys that have to look in the mirror right now that aren’t playing as well as they have,” Trotz told reporters.

“There are guys that haven’t contributed in any significant way in the last couple games here, be it scoring chances, be it defensive play, be it momentum, be it physicality, all the things. … It’s just not good enough. We just have to up our game, plain and simple.”

Radulov and Kostitsyn were midseason additions; Radulov decided to return to Nashville after three seasons in Russia, and Poile acquired Kostitsyn from the Montreal Canadiens.

Radulov, though, was expected to be a difference maker. A former first-round draft pick who left the team in 2008, he was welcomed as a prodigal son, and his dynamic offensive skills seemed to be what the franchise lacked. In nine regular-season games, he had seven points. So far in the postseason, he has a goal and five assists.

Definitely. LA is TV market No. 2. Phoenix is 12, St. Louis 21 and Nashville 29.

How 'Bout them Rangers?!?!?

I love this Kreider kid, just love him...and I've already made my love for Hagelin known here during the regular season.

I know it's too early to tell, but I'd love to see a Rangers-Flyers Eastern Final. The Devils are the only team left that has me a little worried. I want The Rangers to have nothing to do with them this year in the playoffs.
I thought The Preds were pretty much unstoppaple as far as the West is concerned, but the way Phoenix is playing them I've lost my fear of them and think they can be beaten.
I hate watching the N.Y. games on CBC. They were all for the Sens in round 1 (understandable), but now the love for The Caps makes me sick. The Rangers gets no respect I tells 'ya.

The Kings bandwagon is on the verge of capsizing out here.  Funny thing, based on the last week or so of the regular season, the people I know who are real hockey fans were all doom and gloom.  Right now, the Kings are a hotter ticket than the Lakers or the Clippers.

Broyle is killing the Rangers as it seems everytime the Caps score he's in the box (this also happened against the Senators). He scored a goal in the 1st playoff game in Round 1 but I'm thinking he needs to be benched.

The Rangers are so frustrating to watch because they don't score like other teams do.  Every game is a 1 goal game.

I love that they had a game where they cae back to win, and got a goal when they needed one.   They realy haven't done that much this year because most of the time they had the lead from start to finish.  It's good to see that your team has some kind of resolve when the pressure is on.  Also, I don't know if there is a team that is more comfortable in 1 goal games than the Rangers are because that is all they have played all year.

Yup.

I knew the Caps would win that game.

What's with Torts not relying on Kreider last night? Hell the kid got it done in the Ottawa game 7, but it seems he has lost his faith in using him. He better use him more in game 7. I think the kid is\will be the real deal.

And HBF, I totally agree with your other post about Game 6 being the greatest Ranger victory since '94. I actually said something along the same lines as that the other night to my Dad right after Staal scored.

Torts better have someone glued to Ovechkin Saturday. I'm sick of The King letting in those goals by him 15 feet out. I hope someone knocks his f'ing head off to be honest.

Yeah, that and The Devils didn't get sucked into to playing The Flyers game. The Pens fell into that trap by letting Hartnell and Co. get into their heads in round one, but The Devils kept their cool and didn't get sucked into taking the bad penalties. Well that and Bryz their goalie is just herrendous. It's a shame that they are now stuck with this guy for what? 7 more years at an outrageous contract? Can you imagine if they were playing with Mike Smith in their net? They would have definitely been in the Conference Finals and very well could have won it all. I know a lot of the analysts are saying Bryz deserves another chance next year, but what happens if nothing changes and the Flyers are stuck with an overpriced goalie? Does Snider bite the bullet and buy the contract out? I would say if things don't improve in net after next season their GM is gone and whoever they get to be the new one, might be able to tempt the owner to buy the contract out. The problem is it will still be a huge contract after next season...Something like $27, $28 million left after the 201213 campaign? What's your opinion on the situation in goal Ted, being you're arguably the biggest Flyer fan here.

And...

LET'S GO RANGERS. CLAP-CLAP--CLAP,CLAP,CLAP!!!!

That was an amazing game.  The Rangers really put the work in on the forecheck.  I really thought they were going to win with about 3 minutes left, because their forwards were stopping the Caps dead in their tracks in the neutral zone time after time.  It took Holtby an extra 30 seconds at least to get to the bench because the Rangers kept stalling the puck in the Caps' end.

Good game for the Rangers. They got ahead early, which was exactly how they are built to win, and scored again. Then, in typical fashion, Henrik gives up a soft goal.
Henrik stands on his head and can make the toughest saves in any situation, but he's just not a lock-down goalie.

Had any of the Devils' shots actually gotten through, the score would've been 3-0 NJ.

The Rangers are so boring. Shot blocking is the new trap.

If NJ can figure out how to get around the shot blocking, NYR is in trouble.

That doesn't even make sense.

So you're saying that the Rangers goals should not have gone in and the Devils would have scored 3 if there was no shot blocking?

NY's goalie is Lundqvist and he's simply a great goalie. He concerns me for letting soft stuff in but he stands on his head most nights. Pretty much every team would take him over their present goalie. Brodeur concedes that 2012 Henrik is better than 2012 Marty. So the Rangers are likely to stop more shots than the Devils because they 1) Have a better goalie and 2)have a much better defense.

And the shot blocking? If you watched Washington, they do the same thing. The whole "left wing lock" started by the Devils killed the offensive and fun NHL of the 1980's and early '90s. This is the latest version, but it worked pretty well for the Devils on the way to their 3 cups.

My take: The Devils do not have anyone of Ovechkin's skill set (yes, that includes Kovalchuk) and they don't grind like the Rangers do. They will not beat them.

For the record, I'm a Jersey kid who grew up a Ranger fan. I'd like to be a Devils fan but it's complicated.

Say what you want about the New Jersey Devils. Wayne Gretsky once called the Devils a "mickey mouse organization." Since that time, the Devils have been very successful for the most part. Brodeur has been a big part of their success for sure but I give the Devils credit for being able to replace Stevens and Neidermayer on defense. The Devils generally draft well. Look at Adam Henrique and Zach Parise.

I'm trying to convert to being a Devils fan since I am from NJ, never have lived in NYC, and am proud they have a team. That said, it's not easy and I am behind the Rangers still.
Here's a good explanation by another guy: http://www.nj.com/ledgerlive/index.ssf/2012/05/escape_from_new_york_my_switch.html

And if Prust gets suspended, I'm gonna be pissed.  Shenanigans has no rhyme or reason in how he hands out suspensions.

And if Prust gets suspended, I'm gonna be pissed.  Shenanigans has no rhyme or reason in how he hands out suspensions.

He'll probably get a game It looked like it was an Elbow to the Head, intentional or not. Only Pittsburgh Penguin players like Malkin get away with stuff like that.

Yup, another bullshit suspension by Shanahan. His judgement on the suspensions he has handed out for the playoffs has been awful.

The Coyotes were pissed at the ref at the end of the game over something.  I couldn't really tell what, though.

They were still pissed at the Dustin Brown knee to their forward on the offside play that went without a call. Someone should have beaten Brown to a pulp after that.

It was on an offside. Brown should have pulled out of the hit, but he didn't. He didn't move his knee in the way, but he left it in the way, if that makes any sense.

How it was in 93 when the Kings went to the SC finals(and got Gretzky)......half the folks there didn't even know what the fuck they were watching.

It's nice to see the kings go again, since they've been shitty for so long, I don't mind if they win it, as they've never won a cup before. Good for them if they do

I'm not even mad. I expect this shit from the Rangers. I am rooting hard for the Devils to whip the Kings, which I'm confident will happen.

The combination of my dead parents bringing me to Ranger games as an infant in the late '60's and dying before the Devils came here kept me a Ranger fan for my whole, almost entirely miserable hockey life. I vowed to myself that win or lose this year I'm done. Never lived a day in Manhattan in my life and don't like the owners of the team, the idiot who plays GM, or the economics of attending a game at MSG.
Not even to mention the fact that the Rangers are by far the worst of the original 6 franchises.

Rangers, I am now divorced from you. It would have been the same if you won the cup,and I rooted for you to do just that.

Go Devils!

I don't know what the lowest TV ratings are in Stanley Cup Final history ( I'm guessing either 2003 when Anaheim met New Jersey or 2007 when Anaheim played Ottawa ) but I'm predicting that this Final will set a new mark for low TV ratings.

You may be right, but I don't care, I like seeing teams that weren't supposed to make the finals, make the finals.

NOOOOO!!!!!????!!? ERIC. THINK about this over the offseason first. You can't do this. Don't go over to the darkside HBF.
First You dump The Jets to root for The Giants after they got rid of Namath and now you turn your back on the Rangers after a season in which a lot of people, including myslelf thought they over-acheived? A lot of people never expected them to make it this far in the playoffs. A lot of Rangers fans would have been estatic if they just made it out of the first round. This team has a bright future ahead of it HBF. This new Kreider kid looks to me  to be a bonafide goal scorer, something the Rangers really need going forward. Even though Hegelin stumbled offensively as the playoffs wore on, I think he will only improve...And who knows, your boy Zack Parise could end up a Ranger next season.
JUST DON'T JUMP OF THE BANDWAGON YET ERIC, PLEASE? Just wait until we see what happens in the offseason....PLEASE ERIC!?....PLEASE???

AND in other news I saw last night on Sports Central on Sportsnet (A Canadian, coast to coast sports channel similiar to Fox sports Net in the states with various "sub" stations across the country based on geography) that they have purchased the right to air exclusively in Canada next season's HBO documentary leading up to the Winter Classic around New Years Day, 24/7. This next season will focus on The Toronto Maple Leafs and The Detroit Red Wings.
It was also announced that HBO's's NFL version of 24'7 will focus next season on The Miami Dolphins.

Seriously, don't dump a team with youth on their side.  The Rangers have a good young core.  They may add a piece here or there, but let these guys develop.

You know, it wasn't that long ago when they were the shittiest team in the league.  Now, they are upper-echelon.  You're gonna dump a team that has young guys like Kreider and Hagelin?  You can't do that.

I can't root for the Devils. I've tried to and it's just not working. I am fucking stuck with my "birthright" (thanks mom and dad!!!!). I just can't change. I talked to my best friend from NJ tonight and told him this. He was laughing. We've both been Ranger fans our whole lives and lived through good (1994) and bad (every other year) together.

Looks like you guys are stuck with me too then. Thanks for reaching out CB and Hack.

Re the young guys. Krieder is awesome. Hags sucks. Worst hands I've ever seen. I can shoot more accurately, and I'm being completely serious.

I had to get these out of my system:

Kovalchuk should change his last name to Copperfield, because he's pulled the greatest disappearing act I've ever seen.

Someone should tell Parise free agency doesn't start until AFTER the Finals.

Tonight's goaltender matchup...Quick v. Not So Quick

I know Marty can't score too, but I bet he could if the Kings put his sister-in-law in net.

Dear Devils,

That was "Quick".  Suddenly, the sting doesn't seem so bad.  Meet you on the back 9 in 2 days.

Signed,

The Rangers

Next game is on Wednesday, Grog.

We've had three or four years of pretty competitive finals in the last little while, so I suppose the NHL was due for a one-sided series.

One guy at our NHL Playoff player draft/liquorfest was convinced the Devils were Cup-Bound, and drafted Devils with 8 of his 12 picks. He climbed within 7 points of the leader going into the finals, and we all figured he had it for sure since the top guy only had a single LA guy left. Now he's pulling his hair out since NJ has only scored 2 goals in three games. :D

I think they'll win Game 6. If Game 5 was in LA I think it would have ended yesterday.

missed the end went to bed at end of 2nd period, had to really search to find footage of the cup being skated this morning.  Every video was either the goals or post game interviews with only a few seconds of Dustin Brown with cup, but finally found the whole skate of the cup.  Good for the Kings to finally win one and glad Justin Williams got to win another.

They had a small article on her on the Toronto Star yesterday. Apparently she is from Toronto, and as Claw mentioned, is a porn star. Wonder whose horn she had to suck to get those seats.

Thanks Claw :)
She was the only thing I focussed on during this year's finals.
