This is kinda funny in light of some of the discussion I've seen recently about the WWF schedule around the time of the big expansion in '84 when Vince had the crews flying all over hell and back every day of the week.  Listen to the exchange between 1:00 and 2:00 at the beginning of the show.  Monsoon greets the crowd and introduces Mean Gene.  Gene responds by saying "I'm still stuck in a taxi...or an elevator...or an airplane....it's MURDER!".

(pause).  This is the best part.  Monsoon gives an awkward chuckle and says something like, "I know what you mean, I just got back from Chicago.", but you know in his mind he's saying, "Oh just shut the fuck up."

God, Okerlund was brutal calling matches.  Was Vince's idea that Okerlund would do play-by-play and Monsoon would be the color guy?

He wasn't there to call matches. His job was to get angles and characters over.

Gheez - the guy is human and discussed something nearly-non-wrestling-related for 10 seconds. You made it sound like Gene had a meltdown on the air and Monsoon tried to cover. To me it sounded like like some quick harmless banter that was intended more to get over how "successful and growing" the WWF was then to vent about their brutal travel schedule.

I always liked Gene. Others clearly did not but to each their own.

I was thinking the same thing as 1978fan... seemed like just banter to kill a few seconds of time.

Edit... still, thanks for sharing the link, the youtube poster looks to have some decent stuff on his channel.

Mean Gene was a carnival barker in the WWF. I liked His AWA work alot more because He was really toned down and sounded almost normal.

Probably so.  I wasn't trying to make more out of it than what is there, but it's fun to get a little peak occassionally into the behind the scenes stuff since WWF was so tight-lipped about things.

That guy on YouTube has posted several shows from 84.  Some fun stuff to watch definitely.

To that point it IS a good catch. Part of being in the wrestling world was putting up with the travel but the schedule at the beginning of the expansion looked like it was put together by blind monkeys. There was no consideration given for cost effectiveness or the wear and tear on their talent.

Yeah, the guy's got some fantastic uploads, entire shows/cards from the expansion era.

I too didn't think much of Okerlund's comment.  It was his typical carnival-barker schtick.
