Why did He never hold the WWF belt or NWA title? Was it political, or something else?

Vince Sr didn't see him as a world champion, and Vince Jr. wasn't going to put the belt on a 40 year old guy who went to jail for beating up cops.

Around 1980-1981 period He was incredible. Hell, He held the Missouri and Intercontinental Belts at the same time. He was becoming past His prime around 1984.

I don't know if there were any issues with Patera back then or not, such as no-showing, drugs/booze, etc.

Maybe he just showed up at the wrong time in which they were sticking with their Backlund plan.

He was a red hot heel at that time, though.

This. Patera was phenomenal in 80-81. Would have been an excellent choice for either belt

Looking back at RF shoots: Patera and Shiek...Both were drunk, did anyone else give a drunk shoot? Although it seemed they recieved Shiek drunk and very tired...Patera WAS REALLY DRUNK.

Pretty sure Jaime Dundee did a couple of shoots under the influence of something. Kevin Nash and Sean Waltman did a shoot where Nash was drunk and X-Pac and Ryan Shamrock were stoned.

Patera was best as a challenger to the world champion, a regional champion or a secondary champion in a major promotion. Patera's prime also came at the wrong time. AWA had Bockwinkel. NWA had Race, Dusty and Flair. W(WWF) had Backlund and Hogan.

Jamie Dundee just did a podcast with Colt Cabana that was posted last week... haven't heard it yet, but will sometime this week. I can't wait to hear what he says.

The description on Colts site says...

From Bill Dundees Kid to PG13 to rapping with the WWF, Jamie has done it all. Hes one of the most outspoken characters ever in pro wrestling. Enjoy him talk about all types of everything with Colt. Plus CM Punk and Colt give away FREE THQ WWE13 games.

I never saw Patera as a world title contender kind of guy. I thought he was great on the IC level in the WWF and in tag teams in the AWA, but he just wasn't the type any of the top promotions would have put a main belt on at the time.

Patera wasn't anyone's boy. Vince had his long-term champs in place and to hold the NWA strap during that time you had to be a promoter, a Booker, related to one or be one of the promoters boy.

I just remember Patera getting jobbed-out to Bad News Brown on a house show in Erie.

I could see Patera as an out-of-control challenger to any face champion. Maybe even Bock if they wanted to use Nick as a face at any time. Have Ken vs. whomever and he locks on his Full Nelson. Opponent either submits or passes out. But Patera doesn't release the hold and ends up getting DQ'd even though he could have won the belt if he had released the hold. Major heat for him after that.
