Ray Lewis to retire after playoffs

January 2, 2013

OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) -- Ray Lewis will end his brilliant 17-year NFL career after the Baltimore Ravens complete their 2013 playoff run.

Lewis has been sidelined since Oct. 14 with a torn right triceps. The 13-time Pro Bowl middle linebacker intends to return Sunday to face the Indianapolis Colts in what will almost certainly be his final home game.

''I talked to my team today,'' Lewis said Wednesday. ''I talked to them about life in general. And everything that starts has an end. For me, today, I told my team that this will be my last ride.''

Lewis will walk away from the game because he wants to spend more time with his two sons. While working to return from his injury, Lewis watched them play on the same high school football team, and he intends to watch Ray Lewis III perform as a freshman next year for his alma mater, the University of Miami.

''God is calling,'' the 37-year-old Lewis said. ''My children have made the ultimate sacrifice for their father for 17 years. I don't want to see them do that no more. I've done what I wanted to do in this business, and now it's my turn to give them something back.''

Which means he'll pull off his No. 52 uniform for the last time after the Ravens are eliminated or win the Super Bowl.

''It's either hold onto the game and keep playing and let my kids miss out on times we can be spending together,'' Lewis said. ''Because I always promised my son if he got a full ride on scholarship Daddy is going to be there. I can't miss that.''
Lewis was the AP Defensive Player of the Year in 2000, when Baltimore won the Super Bowl title, and in 2003.

''I never played the game for individual stats. I only played the game to make my team a better team,'' he said.

Hated this guy, because he was from The U and mostly due to him being a Raven.   I still think he is a disgusting human being in his personal life and feel that he should have served a punishment in his role of covering up a murder .  But, in saying all of that, he was one of the best, if not the best, I have ever seen play the middle linebacker position.

Awesome player and I loved watching him.  Concur on the whole 'U' persona and elements of his personal life which may have been less than exemplary, but the guy was one helluva football player and as he grew older and calmed, I grew to like/appreciate him more and more, primarily as a player.

my son played Pop Warner football with his son for one year.  Not surprisingly his kid was the star on the team.  Never got a chance to meet Ray but got to know his ex pretty well.  Sounded like he was a good Dad, considering.  Good to hear he still has that passion to watch his kids play.

That fucker and his antics that night single-handedly put the end to the Buckhead that I knew and loved here in Atlanta. I've despised him ever since.

Ray's a HOFer no doubt, but hearing the level of dick sucking going on all day on ESPN is just nauseating. On Jonathan Coachman's (yes, that Coach) show on ESPN Radio he was calling Ray the best defensive player ever, and people still upset over the whole involved in a murder thing should just move on with their lives because Ray has.

Just stop and think how asinine that is: we should all just forget he was at least involved in covering up a murder, probably did more than that, copped a plea and paid off the families of the dead guys to avoid civil suits. Because Ray Ray has "moved on".

Thats how all the rich people think though.  They know they paid it off to move on and never paid the price for it, thus they moved on.

The guy should have been banned from the NFL for life once it was found out what he did, but he never was

I think that's what rubbed me the wrong way about the whole bounty mess. The NFL is trying to act all high and mighty by nailing the Saints to the cross under the auspices of protecting the sanctity of the game, yet they gave Lewis a wrist slap.

Different people in charge of the league when Lewis was part of the cover-up of that murder. If that happened under Goodell's watch, he definitely would have gotten a much harsher punishment.

In all honesty, and I must prefcae this by saying I despise the ratbirds and ray ray lewis, he didn't kill anybody, all he did was gather up his buddies and get the hell out of there before the cops arrived, then did the whole lie and deny routine when questioned, covering his and his buddies asses.

Yeah, it was a criminal act and it was morally and legally wrong, but it doesn't make hin the lowest POS to ever wear a uniform, it's pretty common for folks to cover for their friends and themselves, espeially if you grew up in a rough area where snitches get stitches, or even worse.

However, as a football player I have to give him credit for being one of the very best to ever play his postion, he was so dominant that entire gameplans were devised to stay the heck away from him, other offense feared him, and he was a beast on the gridiron, and is a sure fire 1st round Hall of Famer.

Lying to save his buddies makes him just as guilty as the person who did the deed.

Snitches get stitches is the most ghetto way of thinking about life, and certain population segments wonder why other segments say let them bottom dwellers struggle, they do it to themselves

Mikie, I can't argue what you're saying, I'm just putting it out there that's the way he was taught to think, and why he fled the scene of the crime.

If you help cover up a murder that's just as bad as pulling the trigger yourself.

Yep, and there have been several sent to prison for doing just that, and every appeals court all agreed with the reasoning.

Katook, I understand the philosophy, I was in the Navy with quite a few that had that philosophy, and thankfully, most of them never lasted long on my ship, because its those types that can get someone killed easily
