Giants cut Michael Boley
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 5, 2013, 5:12 PM EST

The Giants are saying goodbye to linebacker Michael Boley.

The Giants announced the move on Tuesday afternoon, and coach Tom Coughlin and General Manager Jerry Reese both praised Boley on his way out the door.

“Michael Boley was brought here as a fast, athletic, versatile linebacker,” Coughlin said. “We recognized his special skills were in coverage. He’s a smart player who made some big plays for us. He was an integral part of our Super Bowl XLVI championship team. Michael played outstanding football down the stretch for us that season.”

“Michael came in and learned our defense quickly and he added speed, coupled with big play ability, to our defensive unit,” Reese said. “He also played an important role in helping us win Super Bowl XLVI. I wish him well as he moves forward in his career.”

The move comes as something of a surprise, but maybe it shouldn’t: Boley will turn 31 before the start of the 2013 season, and although he played well early in the year, he lost his spot in the Giants’ starting lineup late in the 2012 season. Boley was also due $4.25 million this year. He’s still good enough to play for some NFL team, but the Giants didn’t think he was good enough to justify his salary.

Browns release Frostee Rucker
Posted by Josh Alper on February 5, 2013, 4:56 PM EST

The switch to the 3-4 defense has claimed its first victim in Cleveland.

The Browns announced Tuesday that they have released defensive end Frostee Rucker after one year in Cleveland. Rucker signed a five-year deal with the Browns last offseason, pocketing a $5 million signing bonus and $8 million in guaranteed money for his brief stay with the team. He was due a $2 million roster bonus later this week, so the Browns had no reason to see if there was some way to make it work with Rucker in the new scheme.

Rucker had four sacks, 48 tackles and a forced fumble in 16 starts for the Browns. He’s been a solid run defender for several years, which should help him land work with a team that plays a 4-3 front and needs an end.

The Browns get some money back under the cap by releasing Rucker now, although his signing bonus means that there will be a bit of dead money on the cap in Cleveland this year. He likely won’t be the only member of the team to get a pink slip as the new regime starts building things their way.

Rams take a chance on Titus Young
Posted by Darin Gantt on February 5, 2013, 4:43 PM EST

The Rams have a glaring need for a speed receiver, and have some recent success with guys with character issues.

So with the risk minimal and the possible reward high, they claimed former Lions wideout Titus Young off waivers Tuesday, according to Jason LaCanfora of CBSSports.com.

Young was such a headache the Lions gave up on him, but the Rams got a huge benefit from rookie cornerback Janoris Jenkins, who many teams were afraid to touch.

Jeff Fisher has the kind of credibility he might be able to pull it off in most cases, but Young has shown signs of not listening to anyone, and the fact he recently said he was better than Calvin Johnson indicates he might have a better grip on the ball than reality.

But for less than $800,000 in total compensation for the year (including his $555,000 base salary), the financial exposure is limited.

Kyle Vanden Bosch is done in Detroit
Posted by Josh Alper on February 5, 2013, 3:11 PM EST

The Lions aren’t wasting any time when it comes to clearing out their roster after Monday’s start to the period when teams can make moves involving players already on their roster.

Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that the team has informed defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch that he will be released. The news comes on the heels of word that guard Stephen Peterman got the same message and a day after the team washed its hands of the headaches provided by wide receiver Titus Young.

Vanden Bosch’s departure was expected. He was set to count for $10.7 million against the cap in 2013, far too much for a player who produced just 3.5 sacks during the 2012 season. Vanden Bosch signed a four-year deal with the Lions in 2010 and produced 12 sacks over his first two seasons with the team before his production slipped this season.

His departure comes just as Jim Washburn arrives in Detroit, robbing Vanden Bosch of a chance to reunite with the position coach who helped him develop into a strong pass rusher in Tennessee almost a decade ago. It also means that the November page in the Lions 2013 calendar will celebrate a player no longer on the team.

The Lions could use some of the savings toward keeping impending free agent defensive end Cliff Avril, assuming they don’t decide to move in another direction altogether at the position.

Multiple reports are saying that the Giants are about to cut Ahmad Bradshaw and Chris Canty.

This must mean David Diehl and Terrell Thomas are not far behind.

Giants part ways with Chris Canty too
Posted by Josh Alper on February 6, 2013, 4:06 PM EST

The Giants are taking care of all family business.

The team has announced the release of defensive tackle Chris Canty on Wednesday, running the number of veterans slashed from the roster in the last two days to three. Linebacker Michael Boley and running back Ahmad Bradshaw are also out after a 9-7 season that ended with the Giants missing the playoffs.

Canty was due $6.25 million in 2013, the fifth year of a six-year deal he signed with the team before the 2009 season. Mike Garafolo of USA Today reports that he wasn’t offered a pay cut before being informed of his release.

Canty played a key role in the middle of the defensive line during the Giants’ run to glory last year, but was limited to just nine games this year thanks to knee issues that forced him to start the year on the PUP list. The Giants have Marvin Austin, Linval Joseph and Marcus Kuhn — all drafted in the last three years — on the roster and they’ll likely be adding other help on the defensive line with defensive end Osi Umenyiora also likely to be leaving the team as a free agent.

With their moves, the Giants have saved themselves a little under $14 million for the coming year. With other candidates for release or restructuring in tackle David Diehl and cornerback Corey Webster, the Giants might not be done yet.

Eagles dump Demetress Bell
Posted by Mike Florio on February 6, 2013, 3:48 PM EST

Last year, after Eagles left tackle Jason Peters suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon, the “break glass in case of emergency option” was Demetress Bell.

And now the bell has tolled for Demetress.  The Eagles announced on Wednesday that the former Bills starter has been released.

It’s no surprise.  With a $1 million base salary and an $8.5 million roster bonus due in 2013, this was a contract that was going to be honored only if Bell had played like Peters.

Bell didn’t.  He appeared in nine games with five starts in his only season with the Eagles.  He instantly becomes an unrestricted free agent.

The Eagles filled the roster spot by signing defensive end/linebacker Chris McCoy.  And it will be difficult to know how McCoy fits into the team’s new defense since it doesn’t have, you know, a defensive coordinator.

Vikings’ John Sullivan out 3-4 months after microfracture surgery
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 6, 2013, 5:11 PM EST

Vikings center John Sullivan will spent the next three or four months rehabilitating after knee surgery.

Tom Pelissero of 1500 ESPN reports that Sullivan underwent microfracture surgery on his left knee last week.

Dr. James Andrews performed the surgery, which will likely require 3-4 months of rehab. Microfracture surgery, which creates tiny fractures in the bone, is often a last resort for players with serious knee problems, but Sullivan’s lesion was small and he is expected back before training camp.

Sullivan played every snap of the season and was only listed on the injury report as having a knee issue once, in Week 13. The 27-year-old Sullivan was on the first season of a five-year, $25 million contract in 2012.

There's talk that the Steelers will have to dump some players due to cap issues and James Harrison may be one of the first to go.

Ha.

Awesome.

And there's likely next to no chance that they'll be able to work out a deal to re-sign Wallace.

Ravens have to choose between Flacco or Boldin.

Young is Randy Moss with 1/3rd of the skill

Adrian Peterson has sports hernia surgery
Posted by Michael David Smith on February 7, 2013, 12:25 PM EST

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is recovering from surgery.

The Vikings announced on Thursday afternoon that Peterson had successful surgery for a sports hernia, and that there is no reason to be concerned that the injury will be an issue going forward.

“Adrian Peterson had a surgical procedure done today by Dr. William Meyers, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,” the team said in a statement. “Dr. Meyers was able to successfully repair Adrian’s abdominal core muscle injury (sports hernia). We expect a speedy recovery with no long-term concerns.”

A year ago, Peterson was recovering from a much more significant injury to his knee. That recovery went so well that Peterson won the league’s Most Valuable Player award. So a little thing like sports hernia surgery probably won’t slow him down.
