Kolb not at practice after injuring knee on Saturday
Posted by Mike Florio on August 4, 2013, 2:50 PM EDT

On Saturday, Bills coach Doug Marrone described quarterback Kevin Kolb, who injured his knee while slipping on a rubber mat on the way to the practice field, as “day to day.”

Sunday isn’t the day Kolb will return.

Via multiple reports, Kolb isn’t present for Sunday’s practice. While Marrone said the injury isn’t significant, every injury that causes a player to miss practice time can become significant, because it can give the other guy competing for the job greater opportunities to take it.

In Kolb’s case, he’s trying to hold off rookie EJ Manuel.

Manuel surely wasn’t drafted sixteenth overall to be a backup. It’s just a matter of time, then, before he starts, whether because he beats out Kolb or because the oft-injured Kolb is once again injured.

For now, the oft-injured Kolb’s most recent injury gives Manuel an opportunity to take the job and run with it.

Preferably not on a rubber mat.

Raiders sign LS Jon Condo to three-year extension
Posted by Mike Wilkening on August 4, 2013, 4:07 PM EDT

The Raiders and Pro Bowl long-snapper Jon Condo have reached agreement on a three-year contract extension, the club said Sunday.

Condo, 31, has been the Raiders’ snapper since 2007.  A season ago, he notched five tackles on special teams and earned Pro Bowl honors for the second time in his career, Also, he made a key fumble recovery on a punt in a win at Kansas City.

In 2012, Condo’s teammates voted him the winner of the club’s “Commitment to Excellence Award” for his work on and off the field.

News of Condo’s new contract comes two days after Oakland signed PK Sebastian Janikowski to a four-year extension.

Darrius Heyward-Bey sprains knee in practice
Posted by Josh Alper on August 4, 2013, 6:38 PM EDT

Colts wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey’s work in Colts camp earned him some praise from coach Chuck Pagano recently, especially when it came to the growing connection that the new member of the team was making with quarterback Andrew Luck.

That progress may be on hold for a little bit. Craig Kelley of the Colts website passes along word that Heyward-Bey sprained his left knee at the team’s practice on Sunday. There’s nothing more about the extent of the injury or possible timetables for return at this point, but it’s a good bet that Heyward-Bey will see some time on the sideline and miss next weekend’s preseason opener against the Bills next Sunday.

Pagano’s positive words accompany ones from offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, via Adam Caplan of ESPN, that have Heyward-Bey as the very fast receiver with frustratingly inconsistent hands that he was in Oakland. The Colts see him as one of their top three receivers along with Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton, so they’ll be hoping that those hands hold onto more balls.

The answer to that wish and other issues regarding Heyward-Bey’s role in the offense will have to wait until there’s an update about his health, though.

Source: Bulaga has torn ACL
Posted by Mike Florio on August 4, 2013, 11:52 PM EDT

We’re still several days away from the first full weekend of preseason action, and yet another player is done for the duration.

Per a league source, Packers left tackle Bryan Bulaga has indeed suffered a torn ACL in his knee.

The injury happened during Saturday night’s intra-squad scrimmage. Bulaga didn’t miss a rep, but he complained about a problem with the knee after the practice.

Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel first reported that Bulaga has a knee injury, and that the team feared it could end his season.

A first-round pick in 2010, Bulaga was moved from right tackle to left tackle during the offseason as the Packers try to improve an offensive line that allowed 51 sacks of quarterback Aaron Rodgers in 2012.

Ed Dickson’s hamstring leaves Ravens thin
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 5, 2013, 7:14 AM EDT

Injuries happen in training camp, that part is unavoidable.

But when they start piling up at certain positions, a bad situation becomes worse.

The Ravens, already without starting tight end Dennis Pitta for the season, watched replacement Ed Dickson leave practice early Sunday with a hamstring strain.

“Ed Dickson, his hamstring grabbed a little bit, so we pulled him out for precautionary reasons,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said, via Aaron Wilson of the Baltimore Sun. “We’ll take a look at it and see how it looks.”

Even if it looks good, being without the top two names on your depth chart at any position is tough. For a team that figured to lean on its tight ends more after trading away wide receiver Anquan Boldin, getting Dickson healthy and finding him some help is key.

J.J. Watt will go back to the elbow brace
Posted by Josh Alper on August 5, 2013, 10:11 AM EDT

As mentioned on Sunday, defensive end J.J. Watt missed Texans practice because of a sore elbow.

It was a precautionary more because Sunday’s practice was heavy on contact and coach Gary Kubiak said that Watt should return to practice on Monday. When he does, he’ll have a familiar piece of equipment on his left arm. Watt said that the soreness in his elbow has convinced him that he needs to wear the brace he wore last season after dislocating the elbow during camp.

“Cosmetically, I’m just not a huge fan of the way it looks but it never really bothered me from a playing standpoint so I don’t see it being an issue whatsoever. It’s just something I have to play with and that’s it,” Watt said, via ESPN.com. “I just want to be smart with it. I put [the elbow] through a lot of work over the last week. It’s done a lot of work without the brace for the first time in a long time, so I’m bringing the brace back just as kind of a security measure, you know, to make sure it stays secure and it stays safe.”

The brace and Watt went together well enough for 20.5 sacks and a Defensive Player of the Year award last season, which makes it easy to understand Watt’s decision that it is better to play and feel good than look good.

Revis “almost certain” to be back for opener
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 5, 2013, 10:14 AM EDT

There’s obvious motivation for Buccaneers cornerback Darrelle Revis to get back for the opener, since it’s against his old team, the Jets.

But the Bucs are being careful with his rehab from last year’s knee surgery, and they’re encouraged their prize acquisition should be fine.

Bucs General Manager Mark Dominik told Peter King of TheMMQB.com that he was “almost certain” Revis would be able to go in five weeks.

Revis himself tapped the brakes lightly, which is probably a defense mechanism as much as anything.

“At this time,’’ Revis said, “I can’t tell you. But it is my goal to be ready for the first game, and it’s coming along well.’’

Revis hasn’t had any setbacks as he’s worked gradually back into action, and they’re going to hold him out of at least the first two preseason games, if not the entire exhibition slate. There’s no point in risking him then, really, considering what the Bucs invested in him.

Report: Patrick Willis had hand surgery
Posted by Josh Alper on August 5, 2013, 3:16 PM EDT

49ers linebacker Patrick Willis suffered a slight fracture in his right hand last week, an injury that was not expected to force him to miss any time in the regular season.

At the time, there was no word about what kind of rehab process Willis would have to undergo in order to return to the field, but the picture got a little clearer on Monday. Mike Sando of ESPN.com reports that Willis underwent surgery on his hand to help repair the injury.

There’s no change to the timeline for his return as he’s still expected to miss a few weeks before returning in time to play in the season opener. He may not wind up playing in any preseason games, although that probably was the case without any surgery given how meaningless the games are for a veteran as meaningful to the Niners defense as Willis, who has played with broken bones in his hand in the past.

As long as the prognosis remains the same for Willis, there’s a good chance no one even remembers the injury by the time October rolls around.

Packers signing Vince Young to one-year deal
Posted by Darin Gantt on August 5, 2013, 5:46 PM EDT

The Packers might not have a left tackle at the moment, but they’re adding a quarterback.

Former first-rounder Vince Young worked out for the Packers today, and it apparently went well.

According to Ed Werder of ESPN, the Packers were “impressed,” by Young’s workout and “will attempt to sign” him. Moments later, ESPN colleague Josina Anderson reported a one-year deal would be signed.

Werder also noted that the Packers’ first two games were against the 49ers and Redskins, implying that Young’s presence will make it easier somehow to prepare for those two.

Without seeing Young play, it’s hard to know if he’s good enough to replicate Colin Kaepernick and Robert Griffin III closely enough for them to benefit.

As a Packers fan I'm not sure if I'm more disappointed in Bulaga's injury or the Young signing.

Bulaga's injury is a big deal. He's their starting Left Tackle. Aaron Rodgers needs to be protected at all costs.

Report: Sean Weatherspoon suffers dislocated finger
Posted by Curtis Crabtree on August 6, 2013, 3:06 AM EDT

Atlanta Falcons linebacker Sean Weatherspoon left the team’s joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday after suffering an apparent injury to his hand.

According to Jason La Canfora of CBSSports.com, Weatherspoon badly dislocated a finger but didn’t suffer any broken bones.

Any time Weatherspoon may miss because of the injury aren’t yet clear. For a linebacker, a dislocated finger isn’t nearly the hindrance the same injury would be for a wide receiver. Weatherspoon could likely play through the injury for the Falcons’ preseason opener against the Bengals on Thursday night. However, with real games still being a month away, there seems to be no reason for the Falcons to rush him back onto the field.

Weatherspoon started 13 games for the Falcons last season and recorded 95 tackles with three sacks, an interception and a forced fumble.

Injuries muddle Saints receiving corps
Posted by Mike Florio on August 6, 2013, 8:42 AM EDT

As long as the Saints have coach Sean Payton running the show and quarterback Drew Brees throwing the passes, they’ll have a potent passing attack. But the receiver position has produced plenty of question marks in training camp, due in large part to injury.

The good news is that Marques Colston finally emerged from the physically unable to perform list on Monday, after missing 10 days of camp with a foot injury. The bad news is that up-and-comer Joe Morgan injured a knee during Saturday’s scrimmage, and his status is murky.

Payton didn’t disclose much about Morgan on Monday, but Morgan will be getting a second opinion.

Also injured is Andy Tanner, with a shoulder problem.

The situation has resulted in the Saints getting two new receivers, with the arrival of veteran Steve Breaston and the return of Brent Leonard, who was cut last Tuesday.

For now, the Saints need enough bodies to get through the reps of camp and the snaps of the preseason. Eventually, a Week One depth chart will have to shake out. While Colston and Lance Moore remain the likely starters, Morgan’s potential absence throws a wrench into the No. 3 position, and some guys without recognizable names will need to step up.

Or maybe they’ll just use Jimmy Graham more as a wideout. Which could put him on track for the receiver franchise tag in 2014.  Which makes it even more prudent to sign him to a long-term deal now.

The Young signing is odd for sure. Wouldn't have called that one in a million years. Wonder who they are giving up on. Harrell or Coleman?
