In my drinking days, gin and tonic was the classic summer drink.

Otherwise, Canadian Club and soda.

Forgot about this one. We can't get the Gosling's D & S they sell pre-mixed in Canada. I bought a shitload in the US last time I was down there. Stuff kicks ass.

Sad thing is, and I didn't know this when I brought 24 back last time, is that they count as a liquor, which means you're allowed to bring back 40 oz before they start zapping you with duty. Each can I had was 8 oz, meaning that I was 19 over the limit. Fortunately the Manitoba border guards thought I was a drug mule so they were too busy ripping apart my car, so when they sent me on my way they didn't even bother to ask about the extra liquor. Good thing as it would have cost me a lot of money in duty.

no, they are different.

a manhattan is served either chilled or on the rocks, and is typically a whiskey or bourbon with a couple dash's od sweet vermouth.

an old fashion typically has a cherry, orange, sugar, a few dashes of bitter and a splash of club soda muddles together in the bottom of a rocks glass.  then, top with ice and add ones favorite whiskey or bourbon.

at least that is how i was taught when i tended bar.

You've got the Old Fashioned down. That's how Don Draper made one for "Connie Hilton" on Mad Men a few years ago.

When I partake, which is not too often anymore I enjoy the following: Screwdriver, Vodka and lime, vodka and tonic (with a slice of lime)...All on rocks. As far as shots, I'd say B-52's would be my overall favorite by a wide margin.
I do like Mike's Hard Lemonade and those Smirnoff Ice drinks every now and then too. Usually grab a pack of those if I go to a house party when I don't plan on getting smashed and am not in the mood for beer.

As far as beer: Newcastle Brown, Bass, Alexander Keith's, Keith's Light, Olands and Ten Penny (although it's not made anymore).

I agree with srossi. Vodka-based drinks for me.

The finest drink ever made by the hand of man is the Corpse Reviver #2.

1 oz Gin
1 oz Cointreau (Triple Sec is fine and I think it makes a better drink)
1 oz Lillet blanc
1oz fresh squeezed lemon juice
2 drops Absinthe

The amounts are important and this is the only drink I actually measure out.  Add the above into a shaker with ice, shake very hard, strain into a cocktail glass, drop in a maraschino cherry and enjoy.  The only other cocktail to even come close is the Alabama Fog Cutter.  Be careful as this is a potent drink. The last time we had friends over for cocktails we served this drink and at the end of the night we found one of our friends walking around our dining room in circles trying to find her shoes.

Or trying to put your foot into a coffee mug.  Shroomin' and boomin'.
