That Alberquerque one is the date and location that Garvin and Regal lost the tag titles to Hall and Hennig, which has been both noted as a phantom switch and a real match and switch (I think by Jimmy Garvin, could be mistaken on that though). This doesn't help either case, except to confirm that Alberquerque had an AWA card on that date and the tag champs were scheduled to be on it (which to be honest I think was already shown to be the case a few years back). I can't remember where I got this, so please feel free to dismiss it as garbage, but this is what I have for the 1/18/86 Albuquerque card... Mike Cook vs the Mongolian Stomper Boris Zhukov vs Scott Hall Hillbilly Tooter vs Jackson Cromwell Brody Larry Zbyszko vs Nick Bockwinkel Leon White and Buck Zumhofe vs AWA Tag Champs Jim Garvin and Steve Regal AWA World Champ Stan Hansen vs Jerry Blackwell So, if the titles did change hands, there had to be some adjustments to the advertised card. Hennig wasn't even advertised but Scott Hall was.

yeah its interesting. Curt Hennig, Leon White and Zumhofe were in Denver the night before. so maybe Zumhofe and Leon no showed due to travel and Curt and Scott replaced them or they knew Jimmy Garvin was leaving soon and wanted to do the title switch as soon as possible or they just made it up. Has anyone asked Scott Hall? ![]()

Garvin said in an interview with the late Mark Nultey the match did indeed happen for what it's worth. He said the office for whatever reason didn't think he and Regal would drop the belts that night and as a rib, instead of dropping the belts at the certain time, they ended up going a full hour and right before the time limit was to expire they dropped the fall and the titles. He also repeated this story on a RF Video shoot. I guess that's the story and he's sticking to it lol

The ad the Albuquerque Journal, one week ahead of the card, shows some of the announced matches with a blurb in the sports section two days before the Sunday card showing the rest. The AWA used some New Mexico locals to fill out the undercard. Civic Auditorium was the venue as opposed to Tingley Coliseum which JCP and the WWF favored. The blurb noted that Jackson Cromwell Brody and Hillbilly Tooter had a big brawl in the area previously. It was billed as Heights vs. Valley to stir up regional heat, probably pitting the fancy part of town against the not fancy side. No results are to be found. I suppose the AWA could have claimed a title change that didn't exist on a card that really happened although it not being billed in advance doesn't mean it didn't happen. By early 1986 the AWA was rife with no shows and rebooked cards with unadvertised matches. If Garvin and Regal gave notice, I can see the AWA rebooking things to have their preferred new champs take the belts. Last edited on Mon Jan 22nd, 2018 03:41 am by tamalie |

its would interesting to know when Garvin and Regal gave their notice. was it sudden or did they give them plenty of notice. if it was sudden then Verne may have said lets get the belts off them. i dont think Garvin or Regal have many if any matches with them after that night that are listed.

I vaguely recall an Observer post from early 1986 which talks about Regal appearing at an Eddie Sharkey Pro Wrestling America show in the days following his tag title loss. I see no results for Regal in Feb. 1986 which could mean he spent the month setting up his bookings out of World Class in Dallas starting in March. The month gap could account for him not having his ducks in a row before giving notice.

Forgive me if these cards have already been included. In 1986 and 1987, Neff Maiava ran what amounted to an outlaw against Lia Maivia's Polynesian Pacific Pro Wrestling. He used some California indy guys like Tim Patterson and Billy Anderson as well as, interestingly, Rocky Johnson. Somehow Rocky wound up working for someone in opposition to his mother in-law's promotion. Neff wound up bringing in a lot of AWA talent to the point he was virtually running AWA cards. October 16, 1986 - Hawaii Ballroom at Sheraton Waikiki - Honolulu 1. The Midnight Rockers vs. The Blonde Bombers 2. Rocky Johnson vs. Buddy Rose 3. Jimmy Snuka vs. Colonel DeBeers January 7, 1987 - Blaisdell Center - Honolulu 1. Jimmy Snuka vs. Colonel DeBeers Also Appearing: Nick Bockwinkel, Larry Zbyszko, Boris Zhukov, Rocky Johnson, The Midnight Rockers, Buddy Rose and Doug Somers, Women Wrestlers March 25, 1987 - Blaisdell Center - Honolulu 1. Jimmy Snuka vs. Colonel DeBeers in a diamond miner's glove match

The Georgia cards were run in conjunction with the Southern Championship Wrestling promotion that was owned, in part or totality, by Jerry Blackwell.
