10/24/83 Rapid City Journal..
Pro wrestling fans may have noticed that AWA All-Star Wrestling on (cable) Channel 2 is no longer on the air in Rapid City. The program is now seen on UHF Channel 31 in Denver, which we don't receive in Rapid. So pro wrestling fans, you'll have to be satisfied with watching the occasional cards on the USA Network (Channel 11).

From the 11/30/85 edition of the St. Cloud Times.

December 10, 1985 - Hallenbeck Hall - St. Cloud, MN
1. Steve Regal vs. Jerry O
2. Buck Zumhofe vs. Kelly Kiniski
3. Larry Zbyszko vs. Leon White
4. Jimmy Garvin vs. Scott Hall
5. The Road Warriors vs. The Long Riders
6. 14 man Battle Royal for $20,000

Your listings have a 12/19/85 card with the Road Warriors as co-winners of the battle royal. I assume that as the results made it into circulation, someone mistyped or misread 12/10 as 12/19.

1/15/84 St. Paul, MN @ Civic Center
The Crusher & Mad Dog Vachon beat Nick Bockwinkel & Blackjack Mulligan
Jesse Ventura & Mr. Saito beat Billy Robinson & Brad Rheingans COR
Jim Brunzell beat Superstar Billy Graham
Greg Gagne beat Sheik Adnan forfeit
Steve Regal beat Buck Zumhofe
att: 11,000

This card is listed back on page 3. Add Blackjack Lanza defeating Bobby Heenan to the results. A Baron Von Raschke vs. Ken Patera match was also billed. I don't know if it didn't take place or if the Minneapolis Star Tribune results left it out by mistake.

I would never blame the newspapers, certainly not in 1984. The newspapers were getting the results from the promoters. The quality and length of the articles were based on the relationship that the promoter had with the local newspaper. I doubt that actual journalists were sent to the matches to write a report on any cards after the 1950s. From what I have seen, it seems that most newspapers stopped sending a reporter by the end of the 1930s.

Late 1983 and early 1984 was when the Baron went into Charlotte as a bounty Hunter for Paul Jones in his quest to unmask Charlie Brown as Jimmy Valiant. BVR wound up on the babyface side teaming with Jimmy before he returned to the AWA. On that date you might find Baron working for JCP in the Mid Atlantic thread.

By chance I mentioned this theory to Von Raschke on Saturday and he offered the possibility that a promoter occasionally advertised talent they knew would not be appearing!! Zounds.

6/9/85 St. Paul, MN @ Civic Center
Michael Hayes beat AWA Champion Rick Martel
No title change. Decision later reversed.
Nick Bockwinkel & Ray Stevens beat Greg Gagne & Steve Olsonoski (sub Jim Brunzell)
Fabulous Freebirds Michael Hayes & Buddy Roberts beat Larry Hennig & Curt Hennig
Sgt. Slaughter beat Larry Zbyszko dq
Baron Von Raschke & Brad Rheingans & Buck Zumhofe beat Bobby Duncum & Billy Robinson & Steve Regal
Butch Reed beat Dave Wagner

Steve O was originally to have faced Butch Reed, but after moving up to replace the WWF bound Jim Brunzell, his spot against Reed was taken by Dave Wagner.

Leo Nomellini, a legendary Minnesota Golden Gopher football player before becoming a star in the NFL and pro wrestling, was the special guest referee for Bockwinkel and Stevens vs. Gagne and Olsonoski.

Rick Martel was to have wrestled Mr. Saito. However, Saito and Ken Patera were found guilty on the Thursday before the card of their various crimes related to Patera putting a boulder through a McDonald's window and then them brawling with police officers afterwards. Their sentencing occurred during the week after the St. Paul Civic Center card, but after being found guilty their bail was revoked and they went immediately into custody.
