Now I first saw him late 70s WWWF. He was actually "The Great Hossein/Hussein Arab" (depending on which wrestling mag you read)

The whole bit was the pointed boots was great but made you know that wrestling wasn't on the up-and-up just in case you weren't sure. The "Persian Clubs" routine was good stuff although they didn't look too difficult. He had solid runs in Portland, World Class and the Mid Atlantic areas from what I remember. He seemed like he could beat the mediocore guys (DeNucci, McGraw) but upending Bruno or Backlund or Putski wasn't in the cards. At least in his first run.

He became an important figure in wrestling history by becoming a WWF champion (ending Bob Backlund's lengthy reign) and being the transition guy to some guy from Venice Beach, Ca. Had a "top tag team" with Nikolai Volkoff for years.

Your opinion on The Iron Sheik? And how long has he been nuts?

He's been nuts going back to at least the early '80s. Dunno how true it is, but Matt Borne tells a story of sharing a room with him and Buzz Sawyer in Mid-South (not sure if they were there at the same time, hence the doubt, but he could've gotten the territory wrong - were they in GCW at the same time or anywhere else?). He woke up in the middle of the night, and saw Buzz sleeping naked, face down. Standing over him was the Iron Sheik. With an erection. Buzz stirred awake, screamed "What the fuck?!?!" and Sheiky tried to explain it with some BS about checking out young men's nice asses in the old country.

As far as his wrestling, he was certainly talented, if inconsistent at times. The entire feud with Sgt. Slaughter was great and finished in a classic match that's ptobably one of the best in the history of the WWWF/WWF/WWE.

One thing that I find somewhat interesting but don't see talked about is that he was probably one of the pioneers in abusing HGH in wrestling, hence how he looked like an athletic, in shape, pregnant man at Great American Bash '90 (HGH makes the internal organs grow, including the stomach, causing a "GH gut").

I liked him because "he could wrestle". Great looking suplexes with plenty of diversity.

When I first saw him I thought he would be a fad ~ as in when the gasoline crisis of the late 70s dried up I expected him to as well.

I always heard it referred to as the Iron Gut.

They weren't in Mid-South together.  None of the 3 were.  They were all in at different times.  Maybe Portland or Georgia?

The Sheik's well publicized obsession with cock sucking and butt raping definitely falls in line with this story though.  Maybe "back" pain wasn't the only reason for quick submissions to the Camel Clutch.

He had great matches with Backlund in 83-83? I remember the match they had in Philly Great "Wrestling" match.

The feud with Slaughter was off the charted. I wish they put the Boot camp match on dvd or 24/7.

Good story Buddy landel told at the SMW fanweek. He and the Sheik were coming over the border from Mexico. The Board Prtrol knew who they were. The cops asked if they wanted to see something. They go into this room and on a table there is a big bag. The cop rips the bag open and there a pot leave pops up. Landel says the Sheiks eyes got real big. The sheik then goes to the cop "How about giving the Iron Shiek former WWF world champion a small taste of american pot."

I would echo what beej said about The Iron Sheik bringing some variety to his matches.  He wasn't a lumbering heel that was common back then.  He was known for the suplexes that he used.  I never thought he would be thrust into the spotlight capturing the WWF to make room for Hogan's introduction as WWF champion.  He was an entertaining performer.  His interviews were great for us back then as he would ramble on about the Pan-Am games and then his spitting routine.

Maybe not one of the most popular wrestlers of all-time, but he surely isn't one of the worst by any means.  You got your money's worth with the Iron Sheik.

Hack needs to show up and tell his story about the Sheik approaching him in a parking lot in the hopes he had weed.

I have known Sheik since 1989.  Granted, he was a bit on the strange side back then, but nowadays he is the 'Say No To Crack' poster boy.  It's sad really, but Sheik did this to himself and frankly - he seems happy for some demented reason.

He used to really be able to work - and work well.  What could have been a respectable, solid legacy has been reduced to NOTHING!

A very good performer in the late 70's to mid 80's who's basically a joke nowadays.  I still enjoy watching his older matches, but anything post WM1 is pretty painful.
