What song is it you want to hear against Does anybody remember laughter. Yeah both songs are overplayed but still are classics.

Freebird is, at least, an original composition by Skynyrd. Stairway was blatantly lifted like almost the entire Zeppelin catalog and arrogantly claimed as their own. I'll go with Freebird simply for that reason, but I'll always have a soft spot for Stairway because it's what I've played to my daughter since she was an infant. She called it baby song.

Both are great (but overplayed). It's really a toss-up, but I'm going with Stairway.

No, that would have to go to You Shook Me All Night Long bt AC DC.

I vote Stairway. I hadn't listened to the song in full, in years. Just because it is overplayed and I had listened to it 1000 times over the years. But it came on the radio a few months ago, and I listened to it from the beginning, and it made me remember how awesome the song is.
Love Freebird too of course.

Stairway to Heaven still makes me turn up the volume and sing along.

I can't stand Stairway to Heaven, so I'll go with Free Bird.

Stairway is my choice.  Buying Zeppelin on vinyl is a nice memory from my late high school and early college days.  Back masking on the college radio station turntables to hear "and there's still time to change the road you're on" reversed as "My Sweet Satan"... and somewhere else in there to find "there was a little child who made me sad and now I hate Satan".

Skynyrd songs were all about greed.  Gimme Three Steps.  Gimme back My Bullets.  Gimme gimme gimme!

I half expect claw to put together an eleven-song head-to-head tournament between Led Zep and Skynyrd, with each song weighed in and seeded like an amateur wrestling meet.

Just a random observation, but "Rebel Yell" by Billy Idol is propbably overplayed even more than Freebird or Stairway, and it totally blows.

First off, neither of those songs are "overplayed". That's one of those things that was true back in the 80's but no classic rock station these days play those songs too often.

As for those 2, I'm voting Stairway, I friggin love that song. It's perfect, the slow build, then Page's killer solo, it's just killer. I mean, so is Free Bird, but not as much.

Speaking of classic "epic" songs, throw Hotel California in there, I loaded my Eagles double album greatest hits onto my iPhone today, hadn't listened to it in a while, but the Eagles documentary has been airing on Showtime recently and I've watched it 3 times, it's GREAT, so I got back into an Eagles mood, damn that song is great.

Seriously though, if you haven't seen that doc on the Eagles, watch it, it's VERY well done. The fact that they actually had audio from on stage from their final show before they broke up, with Felder and Frey basically saying to each other between songs "When this show is over I'm going to fucking kill you" is just killer shit..

Definitely "Freebird" for me.

Has to be the "Play it pretty for Atlanta" version from their live album, "One More From The Road" though.

The piano solo/break about 3 or 4 minutes in always reminds me of Red Sovine. Sounds like it came from one of his songs.

+1

Great show. I liked the Eagles before I watched that, but they were a little before my time. After watching that I had to go back and listen to their entire catalogue.

Stairway's the better song top to bottom. Freebird is mostly about the guitar solo at the end.

Stairway is a great song, from top to bottom. Freebird is a good (not great) song, with a KILLER guitar solo / finisher. Really, one of the best solos/finishes in rock.

I'll give my choice as it relates to my taste in wrestling. I'm a huge Snuka mark. Snuka was a good (not great) wrestler, with a killer finisher. So it should come as no surprise which song I like better overall.

Freebird.

Interesting comparison between Snuka and Freebird. Zeppelin is one of my favorite bands. Skynyrd isn't far behind. As for the two songs, I prefer Freebird.

This is my favorite version of Freebird-it's 1975, in the UK for the "Olde Grey Whistle Test" with just Rossington and Collins on guitar (Ed King left the band earlier in the year). I think it's much cleaner than with 3. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LK-8XBD0m3I

NOTE-The Freebird version begins at minute 29-it's the full show.

And here's where Zeppelin stole Stairway to Heaven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5uMQDlKn8g
