Didn't remember this until a few minutes ago, but didn't he have a cup of coffee in the WWF in the '90s? And then he "slipped on ice" or something (maybe while high) and hot hurt and then released in the first month?

Only time I saw him in WWF was on a In Your House PPV. December of 95. Took the place of Dean Douglas vs Amad Johnson.

Bill and Buddy show was his fnest hour. As someone said earlier, good on top for a territory like Memphis or Continental. But put him in  FL or MACW and he was lost and clearly not capable of hanging with the big boys

Could be decent in the right spot but was too "southern" to have national appeal, IMO (and I am a Southern boy).

NEVER seemed to get that the Nature Boy gimmick Flair and Rogers was supposed to be a superior talent, silver spoon in his mouth, aristocratic type that had real athletic talent and should be able to beat anyone. Landell came across as a "poor" boy trying to act like the aristocratic heel, but having neither the talent, nor the aristocratic background to pull it off. Basically he seemed like a parody.

"The too southern" argument never cuts it with me.

Steve Austin is as southern as it comes. Jerry Lawler, too..

If he'd had the talent to be a top guy, he would've gotten there regardless of where he was from even with his addictions.

Landel was a good worker, could've fit in the midcard of any national promotion. I don't see him as the main event, though.

Sorry but Austin ain't Southern. He's Texan. There's a big difference.

I know Greg Price isn't a fan of Buddy, not exactly sure why. I remember him being a cheap, Flair ripoff.

I remember Flair saying during an interview once on MACW tv to Buddy:

"Cameraman get a shot of this, Buddy, I would lend you one of my robes, if you wouldn't get lost n the arms". Classic line. I think Buddy was managed by JJ DILLION at the time(PRE Horsemen).

Yeah, he was squashed at an IYH, then got a squash win on Raw (I think against Bob Holly, with heel Lawler supporting him on commentary), and was then gone.

Buddy slipped on some ice and suffered an injury (broken leg?) just as his WWF stint began. Cornette had the book and brought him in. Buddy's window had closed by the time he recovered.

Was going to say the same thing. Even Lawler is more Ohio Valley than Landell 's East Tennessee hillbilly.

I agree with the general sentiment. Loved his Mid South run as Reed's lackey. Have watched tapes of a lot of his Memphis stuff, which is very good. He was on top of his game during the Bill and Buddy stuff.

But he clearly was a hillbilly parody version of Flair. Even his robes wer mmuch cheaper and JJ was dressing cheaply, too. It would crack me up every time he claimed to be from Beverly Hills. I felt like that was part of his shtick, that he's completely full of shit, but it's total midcard fare in a good sized promotion. He could main event smaller southern promotions and indies, but he's mid-card to underneath depending on the size of the promotion.

If you hear Steve Austin or Jerry Lawler speak and don't think southern, you need your ears fixed.
Either that or you live in a part of the country where conversing with those accents is commonplace.

Lawler's accent isn't that heavy. Remember that he lived in Ohio for several years as a kid. Re: Austin, like Quatrro said, there is a subtle difference between "southern" and "Texan", but to a Yankee I suppose it all sounds the same.

Lawler I'll give you, although he's from Ohio and is far from being as big a hick as Landell. Austin is Texan, big difference. You just aren't familiar, so it's all Southern to you.

But the (subtle, to you) difference between the level of Southern Hicktatude in Landell' s accent, coupled with the Nature of his gimmick, is what people mean by "too Southern". His accent is Hillbilly if you want to break into down into regional dialects. Listen to the real Leroy Mercer tapes. Those people are from the same part of the country as Landell.

I think there was a rumor he was going to be the NWO's Nature Boy in '98 or so.

That was scuttled quickly as WCW panicked after hearing a quote from Scott Hall about Buddy Landell saying, "Fuck, that guy needs to get his life together".
