Watched the 3/29/86 episode of NWA Saturday Night (World Championship Wrestling on TBS) last night. Pretty solid show with some memorable angles that were funny as hell.

This was the week that Pistol Pez Whatley turned, out of nowhere, on Jimmy Valiant after Valiant, in a postmatch interview, said Pez was the greatest BLACK athlete in the world. Pez took offense to that, so he (of course) turned heel and cut off Valiant's pony tail.

Later we had the first in-ring confrontation between Flair and Morton. Flair was out during an interview during the RNR Express squash, and during the interview he's talking about Morton's fan as teenie girls and he deals with real women. Flair was in Daytona last week, and the college girls were so starved for a 20 dollar bill that he could have taken them to McDonalds and been declared king! (Camera is on Flair at this point in a little inset in the screen, and Schiavone and David Crockett don't realize it, and when Flair hits the 20-dollar-bill line, you see Schiavone in the background just lose it he's laughing so hard and stomping his feet).

Then later on, in probably the most absurd item of the show, Dusty comes out and says USA Today has been asking why an athlete of Dusty Rhodes' caliber ain't starting on some NFL team. Dusty says, jack, when he's making half a million dollars a year, he's earning more than 95% of the quarterbacks in the NFL, he owns three houses and a ranch, and he can have any woman in the world (except, not anymore since Baby Doll has "settled him down").

Just weird fucking shit, and hilarious all at the same time. All that said, Flair comes off more like the babyface in this era while Rhodes, spouting his bullshit, comes off more like an idiot heel. I can easily see them turning both guys the other way in hindsight. Not sure the world was ready for that in the mid 80s, but with Dusty's ridiculous shit, you can see the seeds already planted for people to start turning against him. Earlier in my re-watch in Feb of '86, he yelled at a woman in the audience to shut her fat ass up.

I got the Pro Wrestling USA set from hammetime and this is gold. They can't spell people's names right on screen graphics or even get the name of the program correct. I heard the wrestlers in promos call the show several different things. I am also a huge fan of ""Bob Backland", "Jerry Lawlor", and others.

12/23/91 episode of Prime Time Wrestling, they are about a month into the final version of PTW (the conference table set up). This show had the Nasty Boys losing to the New Foundation via DQ; Big Bossman over Kato and Ric Flair over dale (dusty) Wolfe. In a nice bit not only did the WWF video distort the belt that Flair was wearing but they distorted the belt on a ring side poster they showed.

After digging through more wrestling memorabilia, Corny covers the mega business Memphis was doing in the 70's, Nazi gimmicks, the man who tried to blind Jerry Jarrett and stab Jerry Lawler, Robert Fuller's failed booking run, Civil rights in wrestling, how Memphis dealt with a fan who knocked out a top babyface in a fight, the Memphis star who could have been NWA champ had an accident not curtailed his career, the night Lawler fought a boxer to play off the Ali vs Inoki hype, how a gimmick change turned a terrible wrestler into a main event talent, and more!!!

The Meadowlands plays host to Hulk Hogan defending his WWF title against Big John Studd. Plus Jimmy Snuka butts heads with Bob Orton Jr, and JYD clashes with Mr. Wonderful. Roddy Piper is on hand to provide a race baiting promo. Bobby Heenan wrestles in possibly one of the worst matches of his career. Ken Patera, Johnny Valiant, George Wells and Buddy Rose face off with jabronis and a women's tag match sets the bar for boring...
