Complete air every single time. The main thing that strikes me is the weekly promo segment. The heel managers, Blassie, Grand Wizard, Albano, are very entertaining, if a little nonsensical. But the faces are a cure for insomnia. Backlund, Zbyszko, Garea, Strongbow etc all speak in the same dull monotone and they'll all try their best. Can someone explain how this got over back in the day? And they were good people- in a more simple time fans cheered for the guy who was honest and did what was honorable. You didn't have to get over as much because your opponent had heat. Different times.

Can someone explain how this got over back in the day? Probably- I'm sure there are other exceptions too. He was a heel before that, so maybe he just took heel style promos and "faced" them up. This is before my time, so I'm far from a Dusty expert. If you look at the faces who did crazy promos in the 80s they were heels before that. I'm thinking of Valiant, Hogan, Dusty, Idol, & Piper (went back and forth).

I just watched the 4th Von Erich Memorial Parade of Champions. Pretty lousy card, but it was edited down. Maybe the other matches would have improved the show. Brody brawled with Jeep Swenson Fantastics and Steve Simpson beat the RPMs and Embry in a Scaffold Match- I hate scaffold matches. This match took some of their best workers and limited them to being on a scaffold. Red River Jack (Brody) & Spike Huber beat Abdullah and Eli the Eliminator- bunch of blood and brawling. Red River Jack got to wrestle Gary Hart as a result of the win. Steve Doll (a Von Erich ripoff) beat Killer Brooks Mil Mascaras beat Al Madril- If you've seen one Mascaras match you've seen them all, and Al Madril is boring and fuck so... Champion Kevin Von Erich wrestled Nord The Barbarian to a double count out. WTF? Kevin is wrestling in honor of his two dead brothers and they don't put him over? He was the champion, so it isn't like they didn't want to do a switch. This was a shocker to me. WCCW needed some heels with real cred by then so having Nord lose deciseively to Kevin probably went against that thinking, although yeah, Nord should have been built up enough by then if he got the shot at the title on the parade card. Been watching 1981 and 1982 Japan TV lately, some new stuff found by Dan Ginnetty. It's always fun seeing the various pairings and matchups from over there. Plus I've been watching a bunch of Bockwinkel bouts I have not viewed forever, and the Christmas AWA shows that were put up on the Network. Those have been a blast.

I'm watching a Youtube playlist of Big Time Wrestling from Detroit. Jay Strongbow is wrestling the Sheik for the U.S. title and damn the fans go wild for Strongbow. We always talk about why someone as boring as Strongbow was over, but he sure was no matter where he went. There was a match when The Sheik wrestled face as his manager Eddie Creatchman was having some issue with his son who was managing the heels. Mark Lewin is an interesting character. I'm most familiar with him as The Purple Haze. Sometimes he's a wild man like Haze as a heel and sometimes he a normal babyface.

Nord The Barbarian idolized Bruiser Brody and since Brody never lost cleanly to anyone, Nord refused to do the job. Brody went along with it and, not for that reason or at least not for that alone, was removed as booker the next day at the Fort Worth taping. Gary Hart replaced him and Brody, to his great relief, gladly gave up the book. Nord and a bunch of other guys on that Texas Stadium card were gone in short order. The missing matches from the card would not have added much, The Grappler vs. Cousin Junior and Scott Casey and Matt Borne vs. Black Bart and Jack Victory in prelims plus Brian Adias vs. Skip Young in a lumberjack match and a womens mud pit match that never aired on TV. Adias vs. Young didn't air either because Sweet Brown Sugar was a substitute for Mike Von Erich who was found dead about a week and a half before the show.

Regarding Dusty doing his jive talking babyface interviews in the 1970s when so many other babyfaces were very staid and humble, every promotion seemed to have one wilder or more colorful babyface just to break the mold. In the AWA The Crusher would do his gravely voiced interviews about drinking beer at the local bars and dancing the polka with fat barmaids. The idea was to not have an entire lineup of Bob Backlund types, but at the same time it was recognized that an entire babyface roster of colorful guys would have been overkill. Dusty, Crusher, and others got over big by being the only or among the very few with that sort of charisma and rap.

I just watched a bunch of Thunderbolt this week on Championship Wrestling from Georgia, and damn he sucked on the mic. I saw him as a kid and thought he was mentally challenged and felt bad for him. Maybe he was better at an earlier point in his career or maybe you were being sarcastic.

This and that... Working on the remainder of the December 1986 World Championship Wrestling Sat Night episodes. The 12/20/86 edition has a pretty good interview with Ivan Koloff who runs down Nikita for hooking up with Dusty. The turn happened several weeks ago, but the one thing that bothered me is that they didn't spend a ton of time with Ivan addressing it. There was a short angle a couple of weeks back where Nikita clotheslined Krusher in the ring. Anyway, Ivan does a hell of an interview and at the end lays this down: "Remember the NAME, Vladimir Pietrov!" The 12/27/86 episode has a significant moment. Jim Crockett calls out Ronnie Garvin to the podium and makes him choose between the US Tag belts or the Mid-Atlantic title. He has to give one up. Only allowed to hold one "major" title at a time. Garvin picks the newly one US Tag belts but puts over the importance of the Mid-Atlantic belt. Crockett takes it and says "the disposition of the Mid-Atlantic title will be determined at a later time". Never see the thing again.

I watched a young Nicky Bockwinkel from some old black and white Chicago TV. He was confident yet very humble. It was a great departure from his later character. I watched an AWA angle where Joe LeDuc in a cast was attacked by Mad Dog Vachon. Then Joe does a run-in on Mad Dog and beats him and the Baron with his cast. Was Joe the face? I've never seen Joe work face, but he seemed mild & honest in his interview and then was attacked my Vachon. Wally Karbo and the other office types seem upset with Vachon's actions.

I'm watching a bunch of clips from Paul Boesch's Houston Territory. So far the matches have been great. Andre vs. The Spoiler was really good. Andre sold the claw hold. I just watched a Wahoo vs, Harley Race blood bath. Now I'm watching Brody vs. Rhodes.

There is another Jos Leduc angle from the AWA that I saw years ago on YouTube, but it got pulled and never returned. He and Larry Hennig were a babyface tag team, highlighting their lumberjacks tag team gimmick. They had a tug of war in the TV studio with Jimmy and Johnny Valiant in late 1975. The Valiants were losing, so they let go of the rope, causing Hennig and Leduc to tumble to the mat after which the heels gave them a beating to set up house show matches.
