Kiffin is no longer the Defensive Coordinator in Dallas but I'm not sure if this shuffling gets any points or not ????

from si.com:

The Dallas Cowboys made wholesale changes to their coaching staff Tuesday, installing former St. Louis Rams coach Scott Linehan as passing game coordinator, moving Monte Kiffin from defensive coordinator to an assistant head coaching position and promoting former Detroit Lions head coach Rod Marinelli from defensive line coach to defensive coordinator, according to Pro Football Talk.

The Cowboys ranked 16th in the NFL in total offense but averaged 94.2 yards a game, ranking 24th in the league.
“Our responsibility is to bring quality people into our organization and find the best fit for them.  That applies to players, and it applies to coaches,” coach Jason Garrett said. “Rod Marinelli’s production in terms of creating turnovers and changing field position as a defensive coordinator is well documented. Monte Kiffin’s overall knowledge and understanding of this defensive scheme will be put to use in mentoring all of the players and coaches on the defensive side of the ball. Monte was brought here to direct a transition in philosophy to the 4-3 scheme, and he will continue to oversee the development of our defense in this scheme.

But their defense was historically bad, ranking dead last in the NFL in total defense and surrendering 415.3 yards a game, almost 20 yards more than the closest team.

I'm guessing probably "no" in terms of getting points but we'll see what Claw says.

We'll probably have to wait until he gets fired at the end of the year when the Cowboys once again finish 8-8. :)

from tsn.ca:

Barry Trotz, the NHL's longest tenured head coach with one team and the only coach the Predators have ever known, will not be back for a 16th season with Nashville.

The Predators announced Monday they have told Trotz his contract will not be renewed and that they are starting a search for a new coach immediately. Trotz is being offered a job in the team's hockey operations department, though the two-time Jack Adams finalist could be a top coaching target for other teams.

Missing the playoffs two straight seasons -- the first time since 2001-02 and 2002-03 -- was too much for a franchise that needs to reach the post-season to sell tickets and generate crucial revenue. Trotz's contract expires June 30.

"Our organization has high expectations and we have not met them in the past two seasons," general manager David Poile said in a statement.

"As a result, it is my decision and determination that we need a new voice and a new direction. ... Our goal is to return to the playoffs with the ultimate goal of contending for the Stanley Cup. We know that once we get into the playoffs, anything is possible."

Poile hired Trotz in August 1997 when the Predators were gearing up for the expansion franchise's debut season in 1998-99, and Poile credited Trotz with laying the foundation and establishing the culture that has helped make the Predators successful.

Trotz and Poile are scheduled to appear at a Monday afternoon press conference.

He coached 1,196 games with Nashville. That puts him second only to Greg Popovich of the NBA's San Antonio Spurs for longest active coaching tenure in the four major sports. He is the only NHL coach to take his team to the playoffs in a span of seven of eight seasons between 2003-04 and 2011-12. He is 21-21-7 in the playoffs advancing to two conference semifinals.

But the Predators have been in transition since losing defenceman Ryan Suter to Minnesota as a free agent in July 2012 and also matching a 14-year, $110 million offer sheet to keep captain Shea Weber.

With the lockout shortening the season, the Predators had a batch of injuries in posting their first losing record (16-23-9) since 2002-03.

Nashville spent more than $36 million on five free agents last July. Goale Carter Hutton did post 20 wins in Rinne's absence, but the rest of the spending spree didn't produce the offence they wanted. Poile traded Matt Hendricks for goalie Devan Dubnyk in January, but Viktor Stalberg was a disappointment with only eight goals and 19 points.

Goalie Pekka Rinne missed 51 games this season because of an E. coli infection in his surgically repaired left hip, and they finished 10th in the Western Conference missing the final playoff berth by three points. Nashville went 38-32-12 and finished the season with points in 10 of their final 12 games, going 9-1-2 down the stretch.

It wasn't enough to save Trotz.

"We support this decision, and believe change is necessary if we are to reach our goals," ownership chairman Tom Cigarran said in a statement.

Mike Woodson has been fired as the New York Knicks head coach, the team announced Monday morning.

New Knicks president Phil Jackson announced in a release that the entire coaching staff was relieved of their duties.

"I have a tremendous amount of respect for Mike Woodson and his entire staff," Jackson said. "The coaches and players on this team had an extremely difficult 2013-14 season, and blame should not be put on one individual. But the time has come for change throughout the franchise as we start the journey to assess and build this team for next season and beyond.

"Everyone in this franchise owes a great deal of gratitude to what Mike and his staff have done. We wish him the best."

Woodson had one year remaining on the three-year contract he signed with the Knicks prior to the 2011-12 season.

Jackson now will conduct a coaching search to find a replacement. The coaching search will begin immediately.

The 13-time NBA champion is expected to seek a coach with an intimate knowledge of the triangle offense. Steve Kerr, who won three NBA titles under Jackson with the Chicago Bulls, has been mentioned most often as a potential replacement.

Woodson coached the Knicks for the past two seasons after taking over on an interim basis in 2011 following Mike D'Antoni's resignation. Woodson guided the Knicks to a 54-win regular season and a division title in 2012-13.

The Knicks also won a playoff series for the first time in 13 seasons under Woodson's stewardship.

Following the team's success in 2012-13, owner James Dolan told staffers on the eve of the 2013-14 season that he felt the Knicks could compete for an NBA title. They fell well short of those expectations.

New York started the season 3-13, suffered through losing streaks of nine and seven games and fell as many as 19 games below .500. They won 12 of 15 games in March and early April to climb back into the playoff race but were eliminated late last week, missing out on the postseason for the first time in four seasons.

The Washington Capitals just cleaned hose firing both Head Coach Adam Oates and GM George McPhee.

from tsn.ca:

The Washington Capitals have fired coach Adam Oates and will not renew the contract of general manager George McPhee after failing to make the NHL playoffs for the first time since 2007.

The team announced the moves in a news release Saturday.

Oates, a former star player for the Capitals, had one season left on his three-year contract. This was his first job as a head coach.

"We are also appreciative of Adam's efforts and thank him for his devotion, work ethic and contributions to the Capitals the past two seasons," said Capitals majority owner Ted Leonsis. "He is a smart, tactical coach who improved the performance of several of our players. He is a Hall of Fame player who we believe will be a longtime coach in the NHL. We will help him in whatever way we are able and wish him well."

McPhee's contract was up. He has been the GM of the team for 17 years, drafting Alex Ovechkin and Niklas Backstrom in the first round.

George has been a terrific, longtime executive for our franchise, and I'm grateful for his commitment to the Capitals organization for the past 17 years," said Leonsis.

While Ovechkin has won three league MVP awards and again led the NHL in scoring this season with 51 goals, the Capitals haven't made it past the second round of the playoffs during the Russian wing's career.

The Florida Panthers have relieved interim coach Peter Horachek of his coaching duties, effective immediately.

Horachek had served as coach of the Panthers' AHL affiliate - the San Antonio Rampage - before coming to Florida to replace Kevin Dineen on Nov. 8.

In 66 games under Horachek, the Panthers posted a 26-36-4 record.

“Peter worked very diligently since taking over as interim head coach in November, but at this time we feel that a fresh approach and a new direction is needed behind our bench,” said Panthers general manager Dale Tallon. “We will immediately begin an extensive search for a new and experienced coach for our franchise, who will guide the Panthers to future success. We once again thank Peter for all of his hard work and service and wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

The Panthers finished seventh in the Atlantic Division, posting the NHL's second-worst record and failed to qualify for the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 12th times in the past 13 NHL seasons. The Panthers did, however, win the 2014 NHL Draft Lottery and hold the first selection in the June 27 Draft, to be held in Philadelphia.

Mike Brown has been fired as the Cleveland Cavaliers' coach after only one season with the team.

The Cavaliers announced the decision to fire Brown on Monday, also saying that David Griffin has been promoted to full-time general manager.

"This is a very tough business," Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert said in a statement released by the team. "It pains all of us here that we needed to make the difficult decision of releasing Mike Brown."

The Cavaliers went 33-49 this season under Brown, who was serving his second stint as the team's coach.

"Mike worked hard over this last season to move our team in the right direction," Gilbert said. "Although there was some progress from our finish over the few prior seasons, we believe we need to head in a different direction. We wish Mike and his family nothing but the best."

Looks like only  Shero has been fired. However a new GM usually wants his own guy as coach, so Bylsma is on thin ice.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have fired head coach Dan Bylsma, and named Jim Rutherford as their new general manager.

The news comes three weeks after the team fired general manager Ray Shero in the days following Pittsburgh's second-round loss to the New York Rangers.

The Penguins also named Jason Botterill as associate general manager and Bill Guerin and Tom Fitzgerald as assistant GM's.

Bylsma, 43, was hired as Penguins head coach midway through the 2008-09 season and led the team that year to its first Stanley Cup since 1992.

Bylsma has the best regular-season winning percentage (.670) in team history with an all-time record of 252-117-32. His coaching wins are the most in team history and he became the fastest coach in NHL history to reach 200 victories (316 games).

"Dan is a good man and a good coach, but I thought we needed a change in direction moving forward," Rutherford said. "I have no doubt that he will go on to be a head coach in the National Hockey League and have success. The search for our new head coach will begin immediately."

"We want to thank Dan for everything he has done for the Penguins organization," co-owners Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle said in a joint statement. "He'll always be remembered as a big part of Pittsburgh sports history for his role in our Stanley Cup championship in 2009. We wish all the best to him and his family."

Rutherford, 65, was in charge of the Carolina Hurricanes/Hartford Whalers franchise for 20 years. He stepped down from his position with the team in April.

Under Rutherford, the Hurricanes tallied a 534-486-156-20 regular season record, along with two trips to the Stanley Cup Final and the team's first Stanley Cup title in 2006.

"Jim has proven himself to be one of the finest executives in our sport, a man who always conducts himself with class and dignity, and we're excited to bring him to Pittsburgh as our general manager," said Lemieux and Burkle in a statement. "He has a wealth of knowledge and experience that few can match, and he will offer fresh ideas and a new perspective to our organization."

Rutherford was a goalie in the NHL for 13 seasons, and played three years with the Penguins from 1971-74.

"I'm excited by this opportunity to return to Pittsburgh and become general manager of a franchise that I've always admired," Rutherford said. "To have the chance to work with Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin and the talented group of players assembled here is something that any GM would dream of. I'm looking forward to getting to work right away – it's going to be an important summer."

Former head coach and television analyst Pierre McGuire was also reportedly a finalist for the GM position after having two interviews with the team.

Pierre LeBrun reported this week that Tampa Bay Lightning assistant general manager Julien BriseBois was another prime candidate for the Penguins' job.

Anybody pick Padres GM Josh Byrnes ????

from cbssports.com:

Josh Byrnes is out as GM of the Padres

The San Diego Padres have decided to make a change toward the top of the organization, as executive vice president/general manager Josh Byrnes has been relieved of his duties, the club announced in a press release Sunday.

"This ownership group is committed to fielding a team that consistently competes for postseason play," Padres president and CEO Mike Dee said in a statement. "Thus far this season, the results on the field have been mixed at best and clearly have not lived up to expectations. After a lengthy evaluation of every facet of our baseball operations, we have decided to make this change today."

“The search for a new General Manager begins immediately,” Dee said. “We are looking for someone who can define, direct and lead this franchise's baseball philosophy for years to come.”

Until the GM job is filled, senior vice president Omar Minaya and assistant GMs A.J. Hinch and Fred Uhlman Jr. are in charge.

Byrnes took over as GM of the Padres in October of 2011 when then-GM Jed Hoyer left for the position of GM with the Cubs. Prior to that, Byrnes had beeen VP of baseball operations for the Padres for a year. He was previously the GM of the Diamondbacks, before being fired in 2010.

The Padres entered Sunday with a 32-43 record, 12.5 games out in the NL West. The Padres went exactly 76-86 in each of the previous two seasons.

Byrnes' two highest-profile moves during his tenure in San Diego were trades. He sentAnthony Rizzo to the Cubs in exchange for Andrew Cashner and also traded Mat Latos to the Reds for Yonder Alonso, Yasmani Grandal, Brad Boxberger and Edinson Volquez.

It's very bizarre.....but since the Celtics have Brooklyn's 1st round picks in 2016, 2017 ( right to switch ) and 2018 I have no problem with the Nets imploding.

I didn't have him.

lobo, since we need someone to take this over until the end of the year, do you want to look after it?

If it's OK with Beej, I'll give it a shot until the end of the year. In November, we'll have to decide if we want to continue it the pool & find someone who wants to run it full time.

As for Gardenhire, if no one had him, I'll award myself 11 points. Please let me know if
you picked someone  who gets fired. I'm not gonna go thru everyone's list everytime someone gets the axe.

Dennis Allen just got fired by Oakland. Looks like a lot of people will get points from his dismissal.

It was just a matter of time for Allen. He stunk from day one.

Yeah but the Raiders stunk long before he arrived. They haven't been over .500 since the 2002-03 season. Their record since that season is an awful 53-127 ( .294 ).

I don't think you can say that Kidd was fired since Brooklyn traded his " rights " to Milwaukee for a 2015 2nd round pick and a 2019 2nd round pick.

Anybody have Mike Malone ?????

from espn.go.com:

The Sacramento Kings have fired coach Mike Malone, according to sources.

Yahoo! Sports first reported news of Malone's dismissal.

The Kings are off to an 11-13 start, but have lost eight of their last 10 -- a swoon that has coincided with DeMarcus Cousins' bout with viral meningitis.

Malone (39-67) was hired by Sacramento following the 2013 season.

One source told ESPN.com's Ramona Shelburne that there was "no incident" that led to Malone's ouster, but that the Kings "expected more."

Assistant coach Tyrone Corbin is expected to serve as the team's interim coach, according to sources.

The Kings next play Tuesday, when they host the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are tied with Sacramento for 10th in the West.

The Kings have not made the postseason since the 2005-06 season.

My only chance to win will depend on how fast the Raiders fire Reggie McKenzie.

My only hope of winning is if the Jays fire both AA & John Gibbons. After making the Josh Donaldson deal, AA is safe.

I have Dwane Casey as my 7 pointer & the Raptors won't be firing him now.

OK - since there appears to be some interest I'll set up the 2015 Tournament thread later tonight. I think I'm going to tweak the rules just a bit from previous versions. I'll set the deadline for picks at noon on January 1st. And ask khawk - I hate it when people are late with their picks.

I'll check later on but I do know that I had Mike Smith on my list. I'm going to wait until tonight to update the standings just in case anybody else gets shitcanned later on today.

Doug Marrone has opted out of his contract as coach of the Buffalo Bills and is now a free agent.
Not a firing, but if this had happened in 2015, it would have counted, according to the new rules.

With 8 hours left to 2014 ( at least here on the Wet Coast ) it sure looks like Count Grog will be the winner. Come on NY Giants - I need you to fire Coughlin right now.

The Count is on a roll. He is the early leader in the celeb dead pool with 11 points.
