Vince is the #1 trend on Twitter right now because of rumors that he will buy Newcastle United.

Vince's "my way or the highway" deal with WWE fans won't sit with English football fans who are better organized and can make life difficult for club owners perceived as improperly running the team or who go against popular wishes. Some can withstand the heat, like the Glazers at Manchester United. However, Tom Hicks and George Gillett at Liverpool and present Newcastle owner Mike Ashley have found out what happens when the fans turn on you. That said, this is a good investment if Vince wants to flip the team later. Owning a Premier League team is becoming like owning an NFL team, but even more extreme due to the worldwide reach. Newcastle United has a good stadium, strong fan support, strong history, and an identifiable brand within the sport. With other clubs out of reach financially or not for sale, Newcastle represent a good bargain now and could be much more valuable later.

Does Vince have the money? Like tamalie said, a Premier League team is like owning an NFL team. I'm sure Vince would be part of a partnership. Possibly with Arnold Skaaland and Willie Gilzenburg.

It said the going price is 256 million. He could easily put down 50% of that and hold majority ownership.

Interesting, I would never have thought the price tag would have been so cheap.

Vince has never succeeded at ANYTHING he's tried other than wrestling, he knows nothing about soccer, soccer fans are a million times crazier than the craziest smark, he doesn't even live in the same country, and right now he's got his hands full basically re-defining the business model for his core company.  This sounds like the headache would be much bigger than any potential benefit.

He'd need to spend £250m just to take Newcastle to the Champions League.  And that's not a guarantee.  If he wants to buy a club to have success, he'd be better off buying someone in France.

There's no guarantee right NOW that Newcastle will stay up in the Premier League

A stupid investment for a guy who knows nothing outside of wrestling

So is the Newcastle team that Vinny is interested in part of the Premier League itself or is it like a farm team or minor league?

It's in the Premier League, and in terms of support it's one of the biggest, regularly getting crowds in the 50,000s.  But there are no spending caps at the top level of football.

The problem with that in the Premier League is the big competition everyone wants to enter is the Champions League, which is a part-league part-knockout competition between the top European clubs.  And you have to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League to qualify as an English representative.

And we already have plenty of clubs who have those spots locked up because of massive spending:

-Chelsea are owned by an oiligarch who has spent £700m on players;
-Manchester City are owned by an Arab sheikh who has spent £500m on players;
-Manchester United have a turnover in the hundreds of millions from global support;
-Arsenal have a turnover in the hundreds of millions from an extremely rich fanbase and a couple of billionaires;
-Liverpool have a turnover in the hundreds of millions from a global support - just not as much as Man U.

5 into 4 won't fit, in recent years Liverpool have missed out, this year it looks like Man U.  So VKM would have to spend an obscene amount of money just to catch up with these - as well as beat the "next best" like Tottenham and Everton who are usually above Newcastle.

And this is happening just as the rules change on spending money, so a club is limited as to its losses - to prevent the billionaires coming into the game dishing out fortunes.

There are many people worried about the long-term health of the game because of the dominance of people who get their money from extremely dubious sources.  But so far those in charge don't give a shit because they're just as corrupt.

Worse, relegation can be disastrous, because the television money is largely hoovered up by the Premiership, and the billionaires have caused huge wage inflation, beyond that which the game itself can sustain.  My club (Birmingham City) is circling the drain because of a lack of income (plus what little income there is is being siphoned off to Hong Kong - long story), others like Wolverhampton and Leeds dropped through into the third division post haste and others like Bolton and Nottingham Forest are over a hundred million in debt.

They are- for now

And they will be next year.  Newcastle are in no danger of relegation.

To those asking a rumor that started on a UK website about Vince McMahon having interest in buying the Newcastle United soccer club, we are told by numerous sources there is nothing to it.

They need 10 points the rest of the way to guarantee survival. I think they will be fine.
