This Weeks Hidden Jem

Where exactly do we start with this one? WWE has treated us to only one gem this week, and it’s perhaps one of the most bizarre yet lesser-known oddities in AWA history. Titled “The Battle of Breakfast Cereal”, (though the official title may well be “In Your Space!”) this is effectively a 1-hour commercial sponsored by Kellogg’s. Featuring 4 matches, each wrestler represents a different food product (separated into Kellogg’s and General Mills teams – guess who the babyfaces are) and the winners get to take home a cheap-looking trophy.

Dated 05/01/1989, this is from the period were the AWA was really starting to struggle financially, (the company was dead altogether by 1991) and thus this was obviously an attempt to bring in some much-needed income. To call it a rather ham-fisted execution would be selling the “battle for breakfast supremacy” short. For those wondering, I cannot find a reference to this event, even on the most thorough historical records and not even as part of a TV taping remotely close to the date. Written evidence of it will obviously exist somewhere but I think it’s fair to say that this glorified commercial is rather obscure. Feel free to share in the comment section if you can pin down more details but considering that this was apparently taped at a hotel, the “event” looks to be a rather low-key affair with a tiny crowd.

I don't recall anything like this airing and it was likely along the lines of that strangely produced pilot from a couple of months ago that was locked away for nearly 30 years afterwards. Do we know what the matches were and who wrestled? It is a bit odd to me that Kellogg's was apparently the sponsor and babyface with General Mills being placed as the heel because General Mills World Headquarters was literally a 5 minute drive from the AWA's office.

I have been tracking this for twenty years. My understanding is it was a sold show to General Mills for a convention, for entertainment. A poster on the old OLC board told me about the tape's existence (he worked for GM as I recall) and I never thought it would come out...Didn't realize Verne kept a copy for his vault.

General Mills being the babyface and Kellogg's the heel would make much more sense as does the explanation that this was a sold show that was taped for posterity or as marketing material to show to TV companies or other corporations possibly looking at wrestling as entertainment for conventions and trade shows. The AWA was trying in its last years to find a way of jumpstarting things, such as the multi-promotional Super Clash III PPV, the Team Challenge Series, the pilot episode with the wrestlers in a studio and different camera angles, and this corporate show. Unfortunately the AWA never executed any of these ideas well enough for them to catch fire. I always thought what the AWA ought to have done was stay away from these gimmicks it couldn't pull off and instead go to a live to tape show with lots of Memphis style angles. The interminable squashes and closed set interviews worked in the promotion's heyday, but not in the AWA from 1986 onward.

The audience are the sales team at a newly opened Kellogg's office in Minnesota. Between every match, a Kellogg's executive gives a motivational speech to them. They are all butt hurt about a recent General Mills ad campaign that shit over their product.

The tape is one boring ass hour. The only notable things being the WWE Network debut of Dale Gagner and one excited fan who yells at a heel "you're not nutritional"

I watched a couple of minutes of it and it’s a Kellogg’s hype session. The portion I saw had a Kellogg’s employee in the ring talking about how this GM cereal is substandard to the Kellogg’s version so on and so on.

“Who wants to sell that? When they can sellllllllllll thissssss!!!!!!!!???????!!!!!!!”

So it is Kellogg's. I suppose if Kellogg's was buying, then why shouldn't the AWA sell to them despite the proximity of General Mills.

I guess this show was in the Carolinas because they used George South and Italian Stallion (who for some reason was using the name Jerry Sabin).  I always associate them more for jobbing for the NWA, but I know they did both.

March 7, 1993 in Fayatteville, North Caroline. Good call.

Interestingly, Stallion was jobbing to Rick Rude the next night in Atlanta for WCW.

In other news, the Network will be adding the next 20 episodes of Thunder on Monday.
