Aerosmith had a heck of a run in the mid 80's to early 90's. Permanent Vacation, Pump, and Get a Grip were huge albums. As kitschy as he is, Steven Tyler's one of those singers that kind of define "Rock Star".

I didn't know that.

I've learned from this thread that our greatest American rock icons are actually all phony illegal immigrants who need to take their shit back to Russia or whatever commie hell hole they come from.  Kenny Loggins, now that's a fucking real American.  USA!  USA!  USA!

REALLY?!?!?!?!

I understand they may be a personal best band ever to you (and I have seen them live, as well as Mission of Burma, who you mentioned earlier, and I liked both shows) but there is NO FUCJING WAY either band can be in talks of best American Band Rock band.

...and don't try the whole "they influenced so and so" argument, because the band they influenced is gonna end up being better than they were in talks of a "Best American Band" thread.

A tough question with the all American clause.Otherwise
Motley Crue & Green Day might be considered.

Not the best but the Pixies were a great band.  Saw them a couple of times live.  Mission of Burma and That's When I Reach For My Revolver is an example of a great song many people never heard.

Joe Walsh and the James Gang deserve serious consideration in the top 10.  I don't think they're the top, but Joe rules.  I just found this recent concert footage with him playing Meadows. Enjoy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EO6D8R9iu6w

Loved the Byrds but I'm deducting some points for most of their early hits being Dylan covers, and a couple embarassing albums towards the end.  Notorious Byrd Brothers is one of my favourite all time albums though.

Try as I might, I've never been able to get in to the Byrds.

J Geils Band is one of the best live shows I ever saw along with Bob Segar they play high energy fun rock n roll and always played all their hits

I saw Sonic Youth twice maybe it was off nights both times
