Well it worked so well on Family Guy so what could possibly go wrong ????

from globalnews.ca:

Not even Archie Andrews is immortal in the world of comics.

Archie Comics says the famous comic book character will heroically sacrifice himself while saving the life of a friend in a July installment of Life with Archie. The comic book series tells the story of grown-up renditions of Archie and his Riverdale gang.

Archie’s final moments will be detailed in Life with Archie No. 36, while issue No. 37 will jump forward a year and focus on his friends Jughead, Betty, Veronica and Reggie honouring the legacy of their red-headed pal, who first appeared in comics in 1941.

Archie Comics publisher and co-CEO Jon Goldwater says they’ve been building up to this moment since launching Life with Archie five years ago

But he'll still be around in the five other Archie comics.

Yawn @ sites still reporting this crap as if it's actually news.

This is the problem with comics the last 20 years or so.  I couldn't even tell you what Peter Parker's origins are anymore since they've changed it around, have had 60 different Spider-Man characters now, some of whom are Parker but with a different backstory and some of whom are a different guy.  There's no point in following a story if it never means anything.

It's all a sales and PR gimmick. They'll likely find a way to alter the "end" to this story at some point down the line.

Its the last issue of this title. So thats why he is dieing. It takes place years after High School. I think the rest of the comics titles take place in High school.

Life With Archie is an alternate universe title so this is truly much ado about nothing.

I remember the Li'L Jinx one page cutaways in between tales of Jughead and Archie. She had a friend named Charlie Hawse, which is name play I fully expected to happen throughout the WWE run of Kurt Angle's sidekick, but never got.

Exactly. It's the Archie equivalent of Whatever Happened to the Man of Tomorrow?, or OJ's If I Did It. "If we were going to kill Archie, here's how we'd do it."
