For the purposes of this let's say when Backlund loses the title although I think somewhere around 1982 is the actual time-window.

So we are saying pre National Expansion.

Gene Kiniski was NWA and AWA Champion. Had WWWF Title shots against Bruno.

Bill Watts had WWWF Title shots against Bruno, AWA Title shots against Verne and NWA Title shots against Harley Race, Terry Funk and Gene Kiniski.

Where Crusher's matches against Bruno in Pittsburgh in the mid 60's WWWF title matches?

Obama isn't respecting any FOIA requests. And Jericho tried the Library of Congress under Bush and came up empty. Further proof that all government officials are working in concert to deprive the American public of vital information like this.

I know that Terry Funk didn't get a WWF Title shot until '85, so he doesn't work here. But did he get a title shot in the AWA? I know he worked Pro Wrestling USA and I would figure with all of those matches in Memphis he should have gotten a shot at some point.

Where I'm going is that Funk would have gotten World Title shots in basically every promotion he ever wrestled, including Japan. I can't count TNA because when he wrestled there, they used the NWA Title. I would imagine there are a ton of guys that we're missing that would qualify under this being that in the '60s and '70s the guys would all travel from spot to spot.

Yes, Arakawa competed in the WWWF from early June 1969 through late December 1969.  He held the WWWF International Tag Team with Toru Tanaka, they were known as The Rising Suns.   Arakawa received at least two WWWF Heavyweight Title matches: one on July 12, 1969 in Springfield, MA.  Another on August 26, 1969 in Atlantic City.

I thought of that one also. Wasn't sure about the NWA shot.

Surprised this many names. Just because the WWWF champs were babyfaces and a heel (Bockwinkle) had such a stranglehold on the AWA belt during the Bruno/Backlund WWWF era.

That Toronto Bruno vs Mad Dog match never happened regardless of what Graham Cawthon's web site says. It was listed in an old Bruno Sammartino record book but Toronto historians have never found any proof of such a match.

For what it's worth when we had Mad Dog at our meet and greet someone asked him about Bruno and Mad Dog said he NEVER wrestled Bruno, Thesz or Kiniski.
Hard to believe but I never looked up this claim but Dog did say this.

Art Nielsen/Nelson- Had numerous NWA title shots, had a few AWA title shots as The Avenger against Verne Gagne in Omaha in 1968 & 1969. He also wrestled Bruno Sammartino twice in April 1966, although I'm not certain they were WWWF title matches, they don't state that they are non-title matches.

There was a time limit draw between Paul Jones & Mad Dog Vachon held in Vancouver BC on 10/10/66 while Vachon was the AWA Champion; however, I don't know if it was listed as a World Title match or not. Jones was defeated by Pedro Morales in Atlanta Ga on 5/25/73 in a WWWF title match, and Paul had numerous NWA World title matches against the likes of Kiniski, Funk Jr, Brisco, Race & Terry Funk.
If the Vancouver match was an AWA title match, then you can add Paul Jones to the list.

I noticed that, but according to Clawmaster's AWA results, Vachon was not referred to as the AWA champion.  I decided against including Jones.

There were a few other wrestlers who received definite title matches in two of the Big Three and had non-title matches against a standing champion of the other Big Three.

Ed Francis- I included Francis and then deleted him. He had NWA title matches against Lou Thesz & Pat O'Connor. He opposed Verne Gagne for the AWA title on November 14, 1973 in Honolulu.. Francis met WWWF champion Pedro Morales on August 22, 1973. According to Graham Cawthon it was a non-title match. He lists the date of the card as August 22, 1972 but Ken Patera appears on the card and his professional wrestling career begun yet, Patera made his pro debut in December 1972.  I'm not really sure he qualifies or not.

Toru Tanaka- Received several title matches in the NWA & WWWF. Had a non-title AWA match against Verne Gagne in San Antonio on July 21, 1971.

Steve Keirn- Had several NWA title matches, an out-of-area WWWF title shot in Florida against Superstar Graham in 1977 and a non-tile match against AWA champ Nick Bockwinkel in Florida in 1976.

Art Thomas- Had several NWA title matches, an AWA title contest against Nick Bockwinkel and a non-title match in Japan in early 1967 against Bruno Sammartino.

Otto Von Krupp/Boris Malenko- Had a few NWA title matches, mostly in the Kansas City area as Otto Von Keupp. Later had several NWA title shots as Boris Malenko. Had a few AWA title shots as Otto Von Krupp, mostly in the Omaha territory. Had a televised march, most likely non-title, against Bruno Sammartino in the WWWF in early 1964,while competing in the WWWF as a preliminary wrestler.

Hiro Matsuda is in the same category as the wrestlers above. He had a few NWA title matches. A WWF title shot against Bob Backlund in Florida on April 5, 1981. He had a non-title contest against AWA champ Nick Bockwinkel on October 22. 1976 in Tallahassee.

Probably not, the match against Gagne was from a television taping.  Highly likely that it was a non title match.
