Ox Baker. A name that usually scares fans and probably some wrestlers alike just by its mention. I first saw this beast when he wrestled for Joe Dusek in Omaha back in the early 70's. During the first part of 1972, Baker had befriended a local pro boxer named Ron "The Butcher" Stander. On May 25th, Stander had somehow landed a contract to fight the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world (WBC/WBA) and one of the greatest boxers of all time, Smokin' Joe Frazier! The building was packed and part of Stander's entourage for the match was none other than Ox Baker! When The Champ got in the ring and approached his challenger, Ox stepped in between the two fighters and got nose-to-nose with Frazier! The fans went berserk hoping for an altercation, but Frazier didn't flinch and neither did Baker. Ox then turned around to wish his pal well in the fight, but alas Joe really was "smoking" that night as he put away Stander in the 5th with a TKO. I will never forget seeing Ox Baker and Joe Frazier there in the middle of the ring.

Ox was an interesting character. He was all over the magazines, I assume mainly because of his 'look'. Was he ever considered a 'world title contender' or was he more or less a sideshow type attraction?

His heart punch was sold as a borderline lethal move. I kinda remember the only angle I ever saw of his was something to the effect that he wasn't allowed to wrestle on WTBS because of this. Otherwise I never saw him wrestle until later years of tape tarding

Larry Zbyszko tells a story of Ox coming into the WWF and he was managed by the Grand Wizard. He was to win his TV matches and go up against Bob Backlund in Madison Square Garden. Baker was so bad in the ring they pulled the plug on it. And that's how and why Zbyszko ended up with a title match vs Backlund out of the middle of nowhere in 1980. It was supposed to be Ox Baker's shot at the belt.

Just heard that story when I was watching Zbyszko's WWF 1980 Timeline Shoot. It was ok but I had a lot of issues with some of Larry's claims about Backlund being the champ and the financial state of the WWF at the time. But that's neither here nor there...different topic for a different thread.

Ox told us that he contacted Vince Jr. way back when he was just retiring and tried to pitch Vince on an idea where Ox was to play a gigolo and try to date Vince's wife Linda. Vince never responded and supposedly never did like Ox. That was straight from Ox's mouth.
