Clawmaster,

Just wanted to let you guys know I've posted the first half of Memphis 1990 on my website. No cards there, but almost all of the weekly results newspaper clippings. I'll have the 2nd half of 1990 out the by next week. I think i've been away from it long enough that I've recovered from being burned out (going thru all the microfilm drives me crazy.) What this means is that til the end of the year I plan to hit the library a ton and get as much scans/data/etc that I can. I'm hoping to get detailed Memphis cards/results as far forward as 1996 and as far back as 195?.

Awesome. Can't wait to see the new results you find.

Anybody that has ever researched can relate to being burned out. It happens to all of us.

I guess it's the nature of the beast, (research burnout). I bought a parking pass that lasts till the end of Dec, so hopefully my real job won't get in the way too much (lol).  If i can get 1-2 days a week in at the library, I'll be happy.

I did do a little researh in mid 1959. I got a lot of clipping of the famous Sputnik Monroe vs Billy Wicks card. Retired boxer Rocky Marciano was the ref. Supposedly the biggest wrestling card ever held in Memphis (Russwood Park - baseball stadium). Attendence was listed as 13,749.

I tried accessing a few pages today on the History of Memphis site and it crashed me, thus I'm unable to track this answer down myself, mj99:

Did the Mid-South Coliseum post attendance for their usual Monday shows?  I ask because I've seen matches where very good bouts are taking place and the upper levels look to be either unfilled or perhaps that section of the building is closed off for wrestling on those nights.  I wondered whether a sellout crowd for wrestling would be different than another sporting event that booked the building, given how the arena management would configure seating.

1st question: The attendence pre-1980 was pretty consistently posted in the newspaper clippings. Post-1980 it was hit and miss. Post 1984 it was pretty much non exisent.

2nd question: I never remember the upper deck being closed off for shows. There was always people up there, sometimes more than others

3rd question: The ring was in the center of the Coliseum. They ran seats up to approx 12' of the ring. I don't know of any show they had that would have allowed more people in there. For concerts they would have the stage on one end and block off approx 15% of the floor (ringside). 11,300 was always considered a sell out for wrestling. I never heard any other shows there getting that size sellout (concerts, circus, basketball, rodeo, etc).

I hope I answered all your questions, if noit feel free to ask me.
