The TV match between Patterson & DiBiase has become a classic in it's own right, with Patterson breaking out the brass knuckles and getting win over Ted DiBiase. Patterson lays claim to the 'Intercontinental' championship shortly thereafter, however, something happened to Patterson and the North American Championship belt in November of 1979.

What happened?

Seiji Sakaguchi beats Patterson for the title overseas in Japan although the explaination on TV is that Patterson threw the belt away after he won the I-C belt in Rio Janeiro.

This.  The title change is not acknowledged by the WWF as i believe the N.A. Tile is never mentioned again.

Patterson LOST the North American title to Seiji Skaguchi at Otaru JAPAN (Nov. 8, 1979), a title change never acknowledged back in the U.S.

The North American Title was fazed out and the Intercontinental Title was created-invented. The kayfabe story was that Pierre Clemont aka Pat Patterson won the IC title at a bogus non existent tournament in Rio De Janeiro Brazil. Also by this time March 1979 the Wide was dropped from the WWWF to just be the World Wrestling Federation.

Ok you had to read the question on this one also, and while 'everybody is correct' about the NA belt being retired et the answer we were looking for was the event in Nivember of 1979 that has largely been forgotten (Patterson losing the title in Japan)

2 points for bpickering, 1 point for Dcsoulchild, Olderfallguy and Angelic Assassin

If the title was "forgotten", then it was retired.
