Welcome to all WWWF fans. Today we will be celebrating and remembering the fabulous and rich history of the World Wide Wrestling Federation. It will be my pleasure to host the festivities today which will consist of twenty-five trivia questions designed to bring back a bunch of memories for you. And as we go we can certainly talk about your other favorite WWWF moments and things.

I have went back and forth on the rules a bit so let me clarify how things will play out.

I will be posing twenty-five WWWF trivia questions today covering the 1963-1983 timeframe. If you know the answer to the question please chime in. Each correct answer will score one point. Only the first person answering with the correct answer will be awarded the point. If nobody gets the answer within thirty minutes I will move onto the next question although the unanswered question is still fair game for everyone in terms of scoring. Once you have guessed at a question, you have already guessed. The person winning today (most points scored) will win a 1976 WWWF yearbook ~ the one that was sold at Madison Square Garden in early 1977.

With that being said - "Ladies and gentleman Promoter Phil Zacko proudly presents Championship Wrestling supervised by the State Athletic Commission. Howard McCall Commissioner, Frances Walker is the Executive Director and the officials assigned ~ Chief Deputy Commisioner In Charge Nick Santauro, the Doctor In Attendance At Ringside Dr George Zahorian, Timkeeper At The Bell Mike Mittman. The referees assigned for this hour of wrestling are Dick Woerhle and John Stanley. And my name is Joe McHugh. The opening contest is set for one fall with a ten minute time limit. In the corner to my left ...."

Question #1

1. The Iron Sheik was the man who eventually defeated Bob Backlund for the WWWF title in late 1983. This was a surprise to many as The Iron Sheik had made a bid for the title in 1979 and been beaten by Backlund. When The Iron Sheik arrived in 1979 he was known by a different name. What was that name?

Correct. PJ draws first blood.

2. Tarzan Tyler and Luke Graham are the first officially recognized WWWF tag team champions. Whom did they (supposedly) beat to win the title and where was this match at? Must get both parts of the question correct to score the points.

Retroken has risen from the grave to tie bpickering for the lead.

11. Name three bad guys that were managed by either Albano. Blassie or The Grand Wizard that never got title matches vs Backlund at MSG.

You can mix and match here 1 guy from Albano, 1 guy from Blassie, etc ~ If they got shots at smaller arenas but not MSG then they do still qualify.

Retroken is on a roll. He's in the lead. Figured you double-posted.

bpickering has tied Retroken. Piper also wrestled Johnny Rodz at MSG in 1979.

13. Years after Bruno Sammartino lost the WWWF title to Ivan Koloff it was revealed that a certain wrestler had (storyline) injured Bruno prior to the match at MSG. Who "got the credit" for "softening up Bruno" leading to Koloff's title victory?

Okay Piper did wrestle Frankie Williams in Janaury 1979 (so I have awarded the point to Retroken - sorry about that bpickering) and PJ is correct. It was George the Animal Steele who softened up Bruno for his loss to Koloff.

Pat Patterson got four straight title matches. Retroken adding an insurance point. He's up by two over bpickering.

18. Sgt Slaughter offered $5,000 to anyone who could break the Cobra Clutch with his "Cobra Clutch Challenge". The ante' though for Pat Patterson was $10,000. Why was the offer doubled for Pat Patterson?

Yes the Grand Wizard hated Patterson such much he put up the other $5,000. That one was bpickering's point. Retroken with a one point lead.

It was indeed "The Golden Boy" himself.

Well. I wish I had 1976 yearbooks for everyone that played along this morning but I do not. Retroken is the winner today (so please PM me your home address)

I hope you all had as much fun playing as long as I had hosting it. You guys are insane ~ banging out 25 questions in two hours.

And I don't think there were many "easy ones".

My boss interrupted me during the Dino Bravo question, pissed me off. So finally I just refreshed the screen and re-joined a few questions later. The guy finally walked away. I figure that if I get fired, I could just sleep on Beej's couch.

Snooze? If you went for a pee you lost. First question 9:12 am. Final answer 10:51 am.

99 minutes/25 questions=4 minutes each.

I think we need to have a weekly wrestling trivia night in the chat room.

Yeah, I think that'd draw. It sounds like fune. I just wish there was another way to do it where you didn't have to be the first person to answer correctly. It kind of takes the fun out of it as usually there are a lot of people who are willing to play but we all just can't show up at the same time.

What about this format, where the host asks say 10 or 20 questions and you have all day or a half a day to answer them, whatever. And instaed of having it as whoever answers it first wins, have it that everyone answers through PM to the host. That way it gets more people involved and we cannot see everyones answers. Whoever answers the most correct wins. The only thing we would have to iron out is basically it doesn't stop people from 'googling' the answer. Is there a way around that while at the same time involving everyone that wants to play? What if we have different sessions. Say 5 people play at 7 o'clock and whoever answers first wins, then another group can play at 10 o'clock and so on and so forth. Still have the people pm their answers so other people can't cheat and maybe give points for whoever comes in first, second and third?
These are just suggestions, as I would like to involve as many people as possible so you'd have to be flexible in that regard.

Definitely accepting feedback on the format.

In all honesty I liked that there was no time to Google. We'll do another WWWF Trivia thing (probably at night next time)

I hope everyone had a blast with it. I know I did.

that works but I liked the very first idea best:

10 or 20 questions and the first person to submit a list with most-correct-answers wins- but have it at a time when everyone can do it, say 9pm and keep it to 10 questions so it doesn't take two hours or whatever

Son of a bitch! :X

The only day that I have to go into the f'n school and do business, the tourney comes and goes before I can even log on.

2nd round coming tomorrow?  If not, I'll post some ball-busters from MY era of the WWWF.  Just for shits and giggles.

Yeah I was surprised to not see you posting in it Harry as this would have been right up your alley and quite an awesome prize to boot. It would have been cool if it was in the evening as I think there would have been a bigger turn-out. Oh well there will always be a next time. Not as if I would have done anything spectacular anyways, even if I did participate.:D

Clearly this is a marketing ploy by Beej to get people sitting in front of their computers on this website for the entire day.  I show up at 6:00 PM and miss 8 pages of action?  Beej, don't you have candidates to call to make sure their interviews went well?  I bet half of them pulled a NSNC while you were posting.

We'll do another one at night at some point. It really was a blast. It was also a pretty intense 90 minutes. I really figured it all would take about 3 1/2 hours. Ooops.

Anyone who wants to host such a thing is welcome to. Keep in mind the site's theme (Sports & Wrestling) means we could have something as broad-based as a "NFL Trivia Challenge" or as narrow as something like a "New York Yankees Trivia Challenge".

Should do a big 6 month trivia challenge where everyone entered into it throws in something to the prize pool and the winner wins a shitload of prizes.

I'm donating a Ricf Flair personal appearance to a wedding, bar mitzvah, funeral, or general Happy Hour of your choice.  Suggested retail price: $65.

I'd switch over to Judaism and have a bar mitzvah for myself to get Flair to come to my place for a bash.

Just realize that you're responsible for the bar tab, sexual harrassment lawsuits, and all penis helicoptor-related injuries.  I just get him there, after that it's all on you to get rid of him.

Shit, I never took the getting rid of him part into account.

No go! I only want him for six, seven hours at the most. I guess I could call Arn to come get him off my couch and to pick his drunk ass up.

I preferred it exactly as we had it - without time to Google. Maybe at night. But it is a lot on Beej to have 25 questions and type in responses and also keep score. I would be glad to help if I can.

When you get into scaveger hunt types of questions that are probably more complex, it is time consuming for the questions to be generated as well as submissions corrected. Just my opinion. But I would enjoy no matter which way.

I see what you're saying there and you make some good points. I too would love to help and run contests too, but really have nothing to offer when it comes to prizes. I myself would like to see a long term contest that would go on over the course of a couple of months with standings, etc. Kinda like a fantasy league but with trivia instead of fantasy nplayers. Anyway, it's good to discuss it as the more we do the more ideas we get and everyone gets to add some of their own.

How come the new 'private' section can still be seen if you are logged out and come to the site as a guest? Or is it just a temporary glitch?
