Yup, you were right. Go to the HFBoards & gloat. Phaneuf didn't play too bad this year as a # 3 or # 4 defenseman. The Leafs get rid of some salary & get a little younger. He's OK as a # 2 or a # 3 guy but he's overpaid ( $ 7 million cap hit until the end of the 2020-21 season ) even for most # 1 guys. - I'm actually surprised that Toronto didn't get a bit more but now you give the kids more important playing time plus get a top 5 pick all of which build for the future.

I didn't think anyone would be willing to acquire that contract. The new Leaf braintrust seems to know what they're doing.

The Toronto Maple Leafs shocked the hockey world on Tuesday morning, pulling off a surprising nine-player deal with the Ottawa Senators that centered around veteran defenseman Dion Phaneuf being sent to Canada's capital. After the deal was made official, shock waves shook the Internet, as the Maple Leafs front office proved that no contract is untradable. Here's how the worldwide web reacted to the gargantuan trade: Want to wish Dion Phaneuf well with @Senators. Thank you for serving as @MapleLeafs captain & your work in Toronto community. — John Tory (@JohnTory) February 9, 2016 Former #sens goalie Robin Lehner says he's blown away by the idea of Dion Phaneuf going to Ottawa. "Tell them I say 'wow."' — Chris Johnston (@reporterchris) February 9, 2016 Dion Phaneuf dealt to the #Sens in a 9 player deal. Well, Tuesday morning just got real. #TMLtalk — Brendan Dunlop (@Brendan_Dunlop) February 9, 2016 At this rate Dion Phaneuf will end up playing for all the teams in Canada. — Brian Langis (@absolut_brian) February 9, 2016 Dion Phaneuf trade is about to break hockey twitter, but hockey Twitter will tape itself up and get back out there... Unlike NBA Twitter — Morgan Campbell (@MorganPCampbell) February 9, 2016 Say what Dion Phaneuf is a @ottawasenators — Kenny (@kennyjones77) February 9, 2016 BREAKING! As in, the Leafs have broken up with Dion Phaneuf. https://t.co/67sMnJi3rH — Steven D'Souza (@cbcsteve) February 9, 2016 The worst part about Dion Phaneuf being traded is that Elisha Cuthbert is no longer in Toronto — Connor Smith (@ConnorSmith09) February 9, 2016 "The Dion Phaneuf Experience" is now on stop 3 of their 7-city Canadian tour. — Dustin (@dustin642) February 9, 2016 One interesting note from this #Sens #Leafs trade: Erik Karlsson is not the highest paid Sens defenceman anymore. It's now Dion Phaneuf. — Ryan Howell (@ryan_howell) February 9, 2016 Phaneuf, who had been with the Maple Leafs since 2009-10 after coming over in a trade from the Calgary Flames, comes to Ottawa with a $7-million cap hit through the end of the 2020-21 season.

I never thought Toronto would be able to trade that contract, but Lou works his magic once again. The Leafs will have close to 16 million to play with in the off-season, which would put them in the Stamkos sweepstakes. If they don't re-sign and of the 3 incoming Sens that's another 9 million in free money for the 2017 off-season.

Who cares about getting a #1 and a prospect in return (actually it winds up being a #2 and a prospect, so not too far off), the big story is that every last loonie of that contract is now on the books in Ottawa. Great job by the Leafs brass getting this done. I'm not too keen on spending all that money on Stamkos. He's a good player but no long elite; unfortunately it's going to require elite money to sign him. And why bring him in now, with a roster that's barely good enough for the ECHL? To pair him with Mitch Marner? Too soon. Save the money for something else on the free agent market. The Leafs have needs at every position, particularly in goal. The other benefit to this trade is it makes the Leafs just a tiny bit more tankable in the race for Auston Matthews.

Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan announced Monday that forward Evgeni Malkin will be out "for this week" and work with the team's training and medical staff. "Right now, Geno is in the process of rehabbing," said Sullivan, who added that Malkin's lower-body injury is not long term, but also not day-to-day. The 29-year-old has already missed three games with the issue. The Penguins are scheduled to face the New York Rangers on Wednesday and the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday before getting a rare weekend off. Malkin ranks second on the Penguins with 23 goals and 26 assists behind the red-hot Sidney Crosby.

Conspiracy theorist in me says Toronto scores Matthews and has him play with Stamkos, but there's gotta be a reason my team gave up the can't miss defensive prospect Jarred Tinordi for John Scott. ![]()

Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley is sending a major message to his players Tuesday as forwards Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan, and Lance Bouma are all healthy scratches against the Toronto Maple Leafs, the team announced. Multiple reports indicate they're being scratched for disciplinary reasons. Just saw Bob Hartley after the start of warmup.. Shrugs his shoulders and told me.. "Stuff happens" ....wooboy ..#Flames — Roger Millions (@RogMillions) February 10, 2016 The Flames are coming off a 4-1 road victory over the Vancouver Canucks in which Monahan scored the game-winner, and all three forwards were present at Tuesday's morning skate. Hartley ended Monday's practice after just 25 minutes following a lackluster effort from several of his players. Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald reported a "number of regulars" showed up shortly before the beginning of the 10:30 a.m. skate. With three forwards scratched, the Flames will be forced to dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen. With the Maple Leafs already shorthanded without the recently traded Dion Phaneuf and a slew of injuries, Tuesday's game could see a lot of unfamiliar faces. The Canucks have sent two impact players back to Vancouver with significant injuries. Alexander Edler has suffered a fibula fracture and Brandon Sutter a broken jaw Tuesday night in Colorado, the team has confirmed. Neither have a timetable for return. Edler, the Canucks' leading scorer among defensemen, has been relatively healthy this year, but has missed a fair amount of time in each of his last two seasons. Sutter has already missed 33 games in his first season with the Canucks. His mother, however, traveling with the rest of the Canucks moms, will remain with the team. Sutter back to Vancouver, but his mom will finish the trip! https://t.co/VR5JruXeDz — Dan Murphy (@sportsnetmurph) February 10, 2016 The injuries leave the Canucks, who have just recently had Henrik Sedin and Dan Hamhuis return to the lineup, further shorthanded in the lead-up, and perhaps beyond the trade deadline.

Matt Frattin may be property of the Ottawa Senators, but he's still in the colors of their provincial rival. Frattin will apparently remain with the juggernaut Toronto Marlies on loan despite being part of the package used to ship Dion Phaneuf to Ottawa. Though it's likely a decision made to make the numbers work, it will certainly be of benefit to the Marlies, who have legitimate Calder Cup aspirations. Frattin has 26 goals and 48 points in 59 games this year. Tobias Lindberg - the second-round prospect included in Toronto's return - joined Frattin at practice Wednesday.

This "Mom's travelling with the team" must be a new thingy this year in the NHL. The Red Wings Moms accompanied them on their trip to Florida, only to see their sons get waxed two games straight!

I know the Bruins alternate between the Moms and Dads every season.

Here's your strange NHL stat for the day - after last night's asswhooping by the Kings the Bruins now have the worst Goals Against Ave. and Save Pct. at home but have the best Goals Against Ave. and Save Pct. on the road. ![]()

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Nazem Kadri was not suspended, but was fined $5,000 for his throat-slash gesture during Tuesday's game against theCalgary Flames, the league announced Thursday. It is the maximum allowable fine under the current Collective Bargaining Agreement. Kadri directed the gesture toward Flames captain Mark Giordano after the defenseman leveled him with an open-ice hit. Related: VIDEO: Maple Leafs' Kadri threatens Giordano after huge hit After the game, Kadri claimed: "I was so mad, I didn't even know I did it." The 25-year-old has 11 goals and 17 assists in 52 games this season.
