Now, will Blackmore play with them or is his Gillan hate along the lines of Simmons/Stanley hate of Frehley/Criss. Hell, will Ritchie even show up. Same thing with Chicago, don't half those guys despise the other half?
As much as I hate to ever agree with Rossi this IS one of the best classes they've ever had.........with the exception of.........well.........it is the 900 lb. gorilla in the room.........oh darn, I probably shouldn't have used the gorilla analogy. Blue Thunder...can you bail me out here???
Should Bob Seger be in a hip hop hall of fame? That's the answer to any question about whether NWA should be in a rock and roll hall of fame.
But it's never been an R'n'R HOF, it's clearly a music HOF and they just call it R'n'R. Most of the earliest inductees were bluesmen who pre-dated but influenced rock but certainly weren't close to rock. People need to get over the terminology. I'm more concerned that some people deserving are left out and others who shouldn't be in any HOF are considered. But I have no problem with N.W.A. I just wish they would change the name of the HOF already so people would stop complaining.
I disagree with you here Rossi. I think it's been marketed as a R & R HOF from day one by Wenner.
They can market it however they want and I don't know why they choose to call it this, but the very first class in 1986 is filled predominantly with guys that would have everyone today screaming "That's not rock 'n' roll!" Before The Beatles, the Stones, Zeppelin, The Who, Sabbath, or any of those guys were inducted, there was this:
Chuck Berry, James Brown, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Domino, The Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, Robert Johnson, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jimmie Rodgers, and Jimmy Yancey.
Year 2 in 1987 gets worse with almost ZERO rock inductees: The Coasters, Eddie Cochrane, Bo Diddley, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Bill Haley, Louis Jordan, B.B. King, Clyde McPhatter, Ricky Nelson, Roy Orbison, Carl Perkins, Smokey Robinson, Joe Turner, T-Bone Walker, Muddy Waters, Hank Williams Sr., Jackie Wilson.
In 1988 they finally gave a nod to what would be considered modern rock by inducting The Beatles, Beach Boys, and Bob Dylan (and with Wenner creating this the fact that it took him that long to induct Dylan was a miracle), but then they also inducted The Drifters, Woody Guthrie, Lead Belly, Les Paul, and The Supremes. At this, at least 95% of the MONSTER rock acts that everyone immediately thinks of still hadn't been inducted yet, and we're 3 years in.
The Stones didn't get in until 1989, The Kinks and The Who until 1990, and by that point there were still HUGE acts not included. No Hendrix, no Zeppelin, no Cream, no Doors, no Pink Floyd, no Joplin, no Eagles - all this was still years away in some cases as they repeatedly inducted anyone but modern rock acts.
So as far as I'm concerned, they set the tone immediately that this is not a Rock Hall and this is a Music Hall, no matter what they call it. All of Motown and Blues and most of Country and Soul made it before 90% of the biggest rock stars ever. Complaining about it after 30 years is a bit absurd. They never changed.
Rossi you're winning my argument for me. Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Buddy Holly not rock & roll? Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, and Elvis Fucking Presley??? These guys are the genesis and the very epitome of rock and roll. It's virtually insane to say otherwise. That's like saying Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson shouldn't be in the MLB HOF because they couldn't throw a split finger fastball. Everything evolves. Even though Chuck Berry can't play guitar like EVH, there would never have been an EVH without Chuck Berry. Wenner and Co. market their physical brick and mortar museum to middle aged white people. They market the induction ceremony at the 20,000 seat Barclays Center to middle aged white people. What do middle aged white people listen to? Rock & Roll.
