Just read over at a reddit group I frequent that back in August some digital cable channel called "Antenna TV" acquired the rights to air 'The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson' in their original form starting January 1rst 2016. They are supposed to air the old 60 minute episodes Monday to Friday at 11pm est & the old 90 minute episodes will air on the weekends.
This I believe will be the first time the complete episodes will air (only clipped versions have appeared on dvd releases) since they first aired. Since Johnny's estate owns them, it was through them that this deal was made. NBC owns the "Tonight Show" name, so they will simply be called "Johnny Carson". They will actually air for the last half hour up against Fallon's 'The Tonight Show'.
Anyway I don't get this channel, & I doubt the deal includes being aired in Canada, so, I'm hoping someone out there will start recording them....I for one would be interested in purchasing season sets once it gets going. Watching Johnny & Letterman was a big part of my life as a preteen, then tennager back in the 80's. Really looking forward though in seeing the 70's episodes for the first time.

The episodes are from 1972-92 according to what I read about 6 weeks ago. I think that may coincide with the move from NYC to LA, but they are when Carson Productions as an entity began holding the rights. There were painstaking efforts to get the clearance for all music performances, it was said, and in addition to the replays in their entirety, they do have plans to create themes for special broadcasts. Things like first appearances by comedians or possibly an hour on a specific guest across multiple visits were mentioned. I am interested to see if these shows do a measurable amount to cause current latenight shows' ratings to move. Whatever demos they think are open to a classic product, there are 20 years worth of product that can be hand picked to go up against a modern day option. Yessssss!

NBC threw out the tapes of most of the shows prior to 1972, so very little exists prior to that.

Antenna TV around here is just a regular tv station that plays the oldies.

If the episode where Andre The Giant is on turns up, let us know. Been looking for that for forever.

Why the hell would they air them at 11PM? If you've got programming like this, which hasn't been beaten to death in syndication, why not run it at a more accessible time slot?

Jimi Hendrix's appearance was one of the episodes taped over or thrown away. Ugh.

You and I are probably the same age.  Staying up to watch Carson '82-'84 was a treat, and then Letterman '85-'86, I was a HUGE fan.  Summer of 85, Letterman was my hero (I was 13).  Can still tell you about the Terry Forester shows, shooting the rubber pellet gun, shit being thrown off buildings, Larry Bud, little girl singing the Canadian National Anthem....that was my show.

Besides the segments you've mentioned, I also liked the Panicky guy & Mr. Curious.

Thanks to the Panicky Guy, I got on camera at a Letterman taping in 1984. Chris Elliot was frightened by a small dog who was part of Stupid Pet Tricks and ran out of the studio. I was on the aisle in the second row of seats near the door, so I got a couple of seconds on NBC as he ran by.

That's when the target audience was used to seeing the show air in its prime.
