Minnesota Wild - wtf is a wild ????

Toronto Raptors - dinosaurs were " hot " when the team was named

Utah Jazz - they should have changed names when they moved from New Orleans

LA Lakers -  they should have changed names when they moved from Minneapolis

Raptors - name should be changed. Too easy to call them the Craptors when they suck.Lakers - how many lakes are there in LA anyway.

Washington Wizards - I hate anything PC. I still call them the Bullets

Soccer teams that just call themselves "FC" (football club) or "SC" (soccer club)

This is prevalent in MLS:

Los Angeles Football Club
FC Dallas
New York City FC
Orlando City FC
Real Salt Lake
Toronto FC
Sporting Kansas City

Dodgers is a great name with a colorful etymology. Not sure if it should have survived the move from Brooklyn, but it's not as egregious as the basketball team calling itself the Lakers.

What year did the Heat and Magic come into the league? Those were a couple of the first non-plural team names.  I think they are both awful, but they've grown on me.  The Wizards is awful.  Pelicans brutal also.
In baseball, the only really bad one is the Rays.

Calgary Flames, Atlanta Flames made sense since Atlanta was the southern most team when it played in Atlanta and Atlanta is sometimes referred to as Hotlanta. The Flames had no great history in Atllanta and team's name should have been changed when they moved to Calgary.

Brooklyn Nets- First known as the New Jersey Americans when they were founded in 1967 as an original member of the ABA. Changed their name to New York Nets when they moved to New York the following year. Possibly someone thought it was clever to rhyme with the Jets and Mets, two other New York sports teams. Now that their known as the Brooklyn Nets a name change, and uniform and team color change is in order. Note: New York Islanders are named after Long Island and Brooklyn is a borough of New York City, it is also geographically part of Long Island, situated on western Long Island, as is Queens, which is also a borough of New York City.

Although they have moved to Washington, Montreal Expos was a strange name, being named in honor of a World's Fair, Expo 67.

Trolley dodger? Weird, I still think it's a terrible team name but thanks for the information.

I disagree.  A lot of the great baseball names have histories like that too.  I thought I had read that they got that name because people had to dodge the trolleys when they were going to see the games being played at Ebbetts Field (before the team had formally been given a nickname).

Why would you have to dodge a trolley? Just stay off the track. Does anyone have a picture from the New York picture Facebook that shows an attempted trolley dodge in progress?

The thing about a lot of "bad" team names is that they grew organically, so to speak.  They were not invented by some PR bod as hitting every demographic target, they were often put to the team by the fans.

One of the things about football over here is that many teams have the same "surname" - City, Athletic, United, whatever.  But they will have a nickname that is not part of the team's official name.  My team (Birmingham City) are Blues; Everton are the Toffees (used to be a toffee factory near the ground), Watford are the Hornets (they wear yellow and black), West Brom the Baggies (their steelworker supporters used to turn up to matches straight from their shift in their overalls) and so on.  There are not many 'created' nicknames.
