Anybody have experience with making "fan videos" for YouTube? What I mean by that is: you create a movie/video/slideshow, with a copyrighted music file playing throughout.

For instance, say you're a teacher and you've taken pictures of your students, believe they are the future, and have created a cheesy Powerpoint presentation of the pics, set to the tune of Whitney Houston's "Greatest Love of All". So you upload the file (SWF, MOV, MP4, etc) to YouTube... but it gets denied because you are using Whitney's tune. Try it again, add a disclaimer, but it still gets denied.

I've seen thousands of videos on YouTube that do this. Popular song and somebody's made their own video of it-- be it with pictures of the artist, movie clips or pictures of their own. What am I missing? How are people able to pull this off?

Copyrighted music in it? I don't think Crimson Mask would allow us to.

So, you're a teacher, who has taken photos of your students and you want to put them up on YouTube to the tune "Greatest Love of All"?

Nope. Don't see anything wrong with that at all.  Sick fucker.

I don't know what the deciding factor is, but most songs are now allowed as long as you hat tip the original artist and allow Youtube to insert a link to them.

I'm not really sure what triggers a fan video from being pulled but it's happened to me a couple of times. Once a video was pulled citing copyright infringement but when I checked back in a few days it was up again with no explanation. Another time a video was pulled using Juvenille 'In My Life' song & was permanently pulled citing same copyright infringement. I have some videos up right now that are banned in a certain country but it's all good everywhere else

To test out if a song is going to be pulled I usually post a raw incomplete video with the song of choice & post it 1st before actually taking the time to complete fan video. If it gets pulled I pick another song. If not pulled I'll delete raw video & then begin editing completed video to put up later
