Ron Glass, who played stylish and sassy NYPD detective/aspiring author Ron Harris on ABC’s long-running sitcom Barney Miller, died on Friday, a spokesperson for the veteran actor has confirmed for TVLine. He was 71.

No further details have yet been made available. In addition to his role on the Emmy-winning workplace comedy, Glass portrayed the spiritual Shepherd Book on Fox’s short-lived sci-fi drama Firefly (as well as its big-screen follow-up, Serenity). His lengthy resume also included fellow one-and-done programs including The New Odd Couple (in the Felix Unger role), Rhythm & Blues, Mr. Rhodes and Teen Angel, as well as guest appearances on All in the Family, Sanford and Son, The Streets of San Francisco, Amen and Friends. In recent years, he appeared in episodes of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Major Crimes and CSI.

Glass’ prolific career also included voiceover work, having been featured on Rugrats (and its spinoff All Grown Up!), Superman, Aladdin and The Proud Family.

Glass’ Barney Miller castmate Abe Vigoda died earlier this year, at age 94.

I'm not a big Barney Miller fan, but I've still seen pretty much every episode. I really like Harris and Fish though. Harris had the most depth of any character on the show other than Barney in my opinion. Barney was boring, Harris wasn't.

Every night I watch the back-to-back episodes on Retro TV, starting at 10PM. Great show, one of the very best ever made and Ron Glass was a big part of that. He, Barney, and Wojo were the only three characters to last the show's entire run.

Of course a lot of it was in the writing, but I love the fact that he never played Harris as an aggrieved black man. The cops in the 12th Precinct were for the most part color blind and Harris never had to wear his blackness on his sleeve. In fact, more was made of Wojo being Polish and Yemana being Asian than of Harris being black.

I remember him from Barney Miller first, but he was also a member of the Firefly cast and that's one of my favorite shows of all time.

Glass was partners with Tony Geary. Guy from the soaps.

I did not like Barney Miller, but I love watching it now. Hilarious.

RIP Harris.
Besides his impeccable wardrobe, I remember his catch phrase, one word actually - puh-lease.Harris was also trying to write a novel.

Holy jeez Florence Henderson and now Ron Glass! I LOVE Barney Miller and currently have season 8 in one of my DVD players.
His guest appearance on All in the Family was freaking hilarious and may be my favourite AITF episode.

Last week Gilbert Gottfried did a great interview with Hal Linden about his career and they talked about Barney Miller and some of the characters on the show.
