Mississippi was part of the McGuirk territory with the Culkins(George and his son, Gil) as the local promoters. At some point, there was a rift and they went out on their own as they had all the local connections. They were even NWA promoters for at least a little while as the minutes from the August 1979 meeting have their promotion (Mississippi Wrestling Enterprise) listed as one of the members(not in attendance), and there is mention of a lawsuit between them and McGuirk. The split with the McGuirk-Culkins was in September of 1977. In the summer of 1978, they were billed with the AWA logo as Nick Bockwinkel came in twice in November of 1978 and March of 1979 for title defenses. Bill Watts and Dusty Rhodes vs. Ole Anderson and Ivan Koloff The George vs. Cobra match decided the new Mississippi Title holder.

There was some grey area in August, especially in Mississippi. I don't think Watts completely broke away until the first week in September. This card was probably still under the McGuirk NWA banner with the Culkins(they had settled the lawsuit by then) and McGuirk unaware of the impending split.

Ah. I thought the Watts split with McGuirk had already occurred. Looking at some of the names, there are definitely guys who stayed in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Ozark Missouri instead of going to Louisiana and Mississippi after the split.

To be more precise, the split in all likelihood took place after the 9/3 Tulsa(McGuirk) card. I was always confused by the exact date Watts took over from McGuirk. I thought it was Sept 5...the tv taping Where Mike George won the North American title from Wrestling II. Then I used Porkchops as the measuring stick. He started working for Watts on 8-16-79 in New Orleans. Then there was a card in Tulsa on 9-3-79 using talent from Watts and Culkin.... Maybe it was a gradual thing over a couple of weeks? I had heard about the lawsuit being settled but never made the connection that could have been what Watts was waiting on?

This card is on a Tuesday, and the ad doesn't say if it's Biloxi or Gulfport.
