style="background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);"Went and saw Metallica at the Linc in South Philly. First thing was Avenged Sevenfold cancelled due to an early birth by one of the band member wives. A D.J. opened the show and he sucked balls. Then Volbeat was on for an hour and every song sounded the same, so far the show isn't off to a good start. Then it's time for Metallica, which meant it was time for my wife to put in her ear plugs. They played roughly 20 songs and at least half I didn't know. Happy they played "For whom the bell tolls". MVP of the night was Bass player Robert Trujillo. Such a solid musician. I give the show 3 out of 5 napster lawsuits.

Seeing them Wednesday and can't wait. Volbeat is awesome too. Such a unique sound blending rockabilly with thrash in different ways. Every song most certainly does not sound the same unless you think Johnny Cash sounds like Slayer.  And obviously Metallica is promoting their new album, which is awesome, so I don't know why you wouldn't familiarize yourself with those songs if you're going to see them live. They play 5 songs from the new one and 5 songs from the Black Album, and then the other 8 songs are mostly their heavier early classics. Not a bad setlist at all. A damn good one actually.

Saw them last night at the renovated Nassau Coliseum.  What a dump that place still is.  It took me 30 minutes to go to the bathroom when the venue was still only at 75% capacity.  People were pissing in cups.  It was chaos.  You can't move in that place.  And it took us 2 hours to get there with traffic.  I hate Long Island shows.

Anyway, Volbeat went on a couple of minutes before 7:30 PM and left my tailgating party early to see them.  I really love this bad.  They had the fans on their side and even got everyone to sing along to Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire", which they always play to open "Sad Man's Tongue".  They played 12 songs in 50 minutes, "Heaven nor Hell" and "Lola Montez" being the highlights.

Metallica went on promptly at 9:00 PM and played a blistering (and different) set for 2 hours 20 minutes.  They really shook it up a lot from previous shows.  We got 1 less new song, 1 less Black Album song, and they played a larger assortment of older classics.  It really was a great setlist that most diehards shouldn't be able to find something to bitch about.  It wasn't the best that I ever heard them, but this show was up there.  "Master of Puppets" and "One" were the highlights for me, and "Atlas, Rise!" is a kick-ass song and the best from the new album.  The stage was huge but we didn't get the whole production that the stadiums got, I don't think.  A little fire during the last song but no screens, everything projected on the stage floor itself.

Setlists:

Metallica:

1. Hardwired
2. Atlas, Rise!
3. For Whom the Bell Tolls
4. Ride the Lightning
5. The Unforgiven
6. Now That We're Dead (w/drum circle)
7. Moth Into Flame
8. Harvester of Sorrow
9. Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
10. Hammett/Trujilo Guitar/Bass Duet & Trujilo Bass Solo
11. The Four Horsemen
12. Sad But True
13. One
14. Master of Puppets
15. Fade To Black
16. Seek & Destroy

Encore:
17. Blackened
18. Nothing Else Matters
19. Enter Sandman

Volbeat:

1. The Devil's Bleeding Crown
2. Seal the Deal
3. Heaven nor Hell
4. A Warrior's Call
5. Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash cover)/Sad Man's Tongue
6. Black Rose
7. Let It Burn
8. 16 Dollars
9. Hallelujah Goat
10. Lola Montez
11. Dead But Rising
12. Still Counting

Rossi, what did you pay for parking? Did you do the pre-pay or did they bang you for forty bucks?

I paid $30. We could've pre-paid $20 but didn't.  We had 3 in our car so $10 each isn't the end of the world but parking has gotten ridiculous at these shows. Also a half hour to get out of the lot. I so prefer hopping on the train for city shows and not having to deal with this shit.

Everything I'm hearing about the "new" Coliseum is a disaster. Boss Tweed had nothing on Nassau County politicians. The crookedest place on earth.

I hear enough difference in their songs to enjoy them all.  I mean, we're not talking about AC/DC here where every song sounds the same...but when you have a lead singer that has a very powerful but small ranged voice, how much "different" can you get?  I love how Volbeat sounds, especially now that I've seen them live and they can perform actually stronger than their albums sound.  But the singer is definitely a Memphis fan as evidenced by his love of Elvis and Johnny Cash.  No references to King Lawler or Superstar Dundee though.
