The Seattle grunge scene was the first time I listened to music that wasn't just chart stuff on the radio. I guess we had just got satellite with MTV when I was around 13/14 in 1991-92. I still listen to it all now.

Cornell was only 52 and was in the middle of touring. Sad day.

This one hits really hard. One of my five GOAT vocalists. Some reports are saying it was a suicide.

Saw them once, on Lollapalooza '92 in Pittsburgh.  It could have been a coincidence but I developed a splitting headache during Soundgarden's set and had to wander outside the amphitheater..  I never quite got into them as a true fan and don't often listen to them now (as compared to, say, the frequency with which I still listen to Dirt by Alice In Chains) but Badmotorfinger was a huge part of the soundtrack to that summer.

This one hurts as much as any "celebrity" death I've ever experienced. I was born in 72, I can remember being probably barely old enough to know who I was listening to my mother's Elvis records, for my 5th birthday I asked for a radio. I grew up on what is now "Classic" rock, through the 80's I was listening to the metal of that era, Rap as it just broke through to the mainstream, etc. I was a trumpet player in middle and high school, I was DAMNED good at it, could read music, everything. I always wanted to be a drummer and guitarist but my guitar heroes then were Eddie Van Halen, Jimmy Page, SRV etc. I could NEVER play like them so I didn't dare bother. When grunge started to hit I was fresh out of HS, I got so hard into Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, Mudhoney, etc. Cobain especially made me think "I can do this.." and I bought my first guitar and started teaching myself to play. Those first 3 bands, Nirvana, SG and AIC, along with Stone Temple Pilots, those bands were the soundtrack to me becoming a musician again. "Superunknown" I literally wore that album out. I know I have purchased it at least 3 times on CD. Now the voices of that generation that inspired me are all gone, I'm not going to lie, I'm depressed as shit this morning.

Fuck, I'm 44 going on 45 and if my wife and I didn't work together I'd just take the rest of the day off and go home, put down the blinds and listen to Soundgarden the rest of the day. Luckily I have the back office and a great set of speakers on my work computer here, if someone comes into my office today they better yell because I'm not turning this shit down..

Shame, but no "celebrity death" bothers me. Saw Soundgarden open for Guns-n-Roses and quite frankly, they were the better band. Really great voice.

Holy shit! I just woke up after an incredible night at the Metallica concert and read this. Absolutely shocked. I'm one of the few people who loved Audioslave more than Soundgarden. Cornell was an amazing vocalist and writer. He had another 20 years of great music in him. This is hard to process.

So what do the festival operators do now? Soundgarden was one of the headliners on Rock on the Range, Rocklahoma, and Pointfest. There are still other big acts but they were going on last one of the nights and were clearly one of the biggest draws.

His wife and everyone around him says he was fine, which doesn't mean much in the grand scheme of things when it comes to Suicide..but to do it right after a show like that..hanging in the bathroom..have to wonder if he didn't pull a Carradine..

I lost my head again...won't you cry for me.

RIP Chris Cornell

Cobain, Staley, and Cornell are all gone now.

Cobain, Staley, and Cornell are all gone now.

And all at their own hands.  The music might be interesting, kids, but these are fucked up people whom no on in their right minds should be idolizing.
