So get to work yesterday and get back my same group of patients from the day before. One of my patients I also had on the weekend. Nice enough guy, who was in with Diverticulitis  Originally he was set to discharge Wed afternoon, but his ride wasn't going to be able to come get him till Thursday ( He was from South Dakota, about a 6+ hr drive ) and they would instead pick him up late afternoon that day. No big deal, Dr was ok with it.

So day goes on and I get to midday and ask him if he had an ETA He says @ 5pm. That was good for me, since has was a low maintenance patient. So I go to eat lunch in our break room. I'm watching the midday news and they start doing their daily criminal watch deal. Wouldn't you know it, my patient pops up on the screen. Multiple Warrants outstanding  More pending, Violent and Dangerous etc....I'm WTF. So I call security to let them know that this guy whose picture I just saw on the screen is in one of my rooms. So he calls the KCPD and calls me back saying they'll be there in 10 minutes because the guys named triggered a priority alert.

So right after this, I get a page from that patients room. He's said his ride will all of a sudden be here in about 15 minutes and starts getting his stuff together, and can I DC him. I notice the TV is on the same channel I was just watching. So figuring that he noticed his pic on the news from 10 minutes earlier, he's looking to bolt. So I tell him to give me a couple minutes to get the paperwork done. (I know he'll stay because he wants his Narc scripts )

At this point I call the Supervisor to let him know what's going on. The cops arrive and they want me to go in the room, get the guy to sign the paperwork officially discharging him (something about the legality of taking him when he is no longer under our care) then as soon as I exit, they'll head it. So go in, get him to sign, head out, then the cops then head right in.

As expected guy flips out as soon as he sees them. At that point I figure, not a good idea for me to go back in to give the cop his DC papers. Turns out he was carrying as well, so probably a good thing he didn't figure this shit out or I"m sure my day would have been worse. Guess there  were multiple felony warrants for a series of assaults on both the Kansas and Missouri side.

The ironic thing is his sister shows up @ 530pm to pick him up (guess he never called her in the panic to take off earlier) and we had to inform her he was up the road at the police station.

The cops sent you into a room with a criminal they knew was "violent and dangerous" after everyone realized he had been tipped off and was panicking wanting to leave?  Another example of the intelligence of cops.  They don't give a shit about anyone.  I would've told them to go fuck themselves.  They don't usually care about legalities so I don't want to hear their administrative excuse.  Considering he had a gun, they were basically begging for a hostage situation.

In retrospect you're right. I should have made the manager do, thus if anything happened it really wouldn't have been a real loss.

Not sure who those cops were but that is not the correct procedure for that situation.  Not even close.  Must be some stupid law enforcement in that area.

I knew a cop many years ago who told me they had to arrest a gang member at a hospital one time.  He had his appendix taken out.  A nurse was the cops boyfriend and said he had gang tats.  He ran the name and multiple warrants came back.  He and his partner went to the hospital.  The guy was much better now and it was going to be his last day.  They thought he might be armed.  Both cops were in plain clothes and watching the room.  They waited for him to use the restroom.  When he came out he was in cuffs almost immediately.  No yelling and they closed the door so the other patients wouldn't hear.  Read him his rights and had him out in less than 5 minutes.  His physician had already given he Ok.  As this cop used to tell me, the job is about keeping people safe and avoiding violence.
This was a bad guy.  Wanted for multiple violent crimes.  Actually made bail but didn't appear in court.  Same old story.

It's not an actual pagers, just a term i use. It's a text message that goes to our phones, but it's called a paging system.

I actually get a fair amount of criminals who are held at Leavenworth. We have a sister hospital in that town, but if it's anything serious, they transfer to us. For the most part they dont cause shit because A: There's 2 armed guards 24/7, and B: They realize that they have a better room there than in the prison, and that there area  lot better females to look at daily.

Interesting story. Would have been a lot cooler if you could have worked Rob into it somehow though.

If I get Lenny Clarke or Charles LaQuinta as a patient, I'm sure Rob will be involved.
