I was 6 at the time. We were coming home from a trip from Florida. When he got home looked at the local paper and it was on the front page.

I was 5 years old. From as far back as I can remember, I used to listen to my parents records on our big console record player. I wore out her Elvis records listening to him. In 77, at 5 years old Elvis to me was like the biggest name in the world. I remember my mom picking me up from our friends house I stayed at back then during the day (I hadn't started school yet) and getting in her car and hearing the guy on the radio say Elvis Presley had died, in my head right now I can vividly remember that and just being in shock even at that age..

I was 10 weeks old.

I really have no recollection of any celebrity death at all prior to being much, much older (unless you count The Challenger exploding, but I wouldn't consider them celebrities).  Certainly I must've heard about many, but they just didn't leave an impression.  The first one wasn't until I was 12 in 1989 when I was watching MNF after Christmas dinner and heard that Billy Martin died.  That stunned me.  The second was 2 years later when Freddy Mercury died.  When I was in single digits I guess I was just pretty insulated from pop culture stuff.

And this is one of those things where time plays tricks on you, like how it seemed like Backlund was gone from the WWF for 60 years instead of 10 because of how much things had changed while he was gone.  Mercury died 3 years before Kurt Cobain.  That's just crazy to me.  It seems like a different lifetime.  I was such a different person in those 3 years that it doesn't even register as happening within the same decade.  In my mind, Mercury died when I was a baby and Cobain died when I was an adult.  Of course I was neither a baby nor an adult during that time.

I was in a Dunkin' Donuts parking lot when the news about Elvis came over the radio. Amazing to realize that we lost Elvis, Groucho and Bing Crosby all within a span of a few weeks. (Groucho was just three days after Elvis.)

Kind of interesting that Elvis and Babe Ruth both died on August 16 - the biggest cultural icons of the first and second halves of the 20th century.
