It's just dropped online, and I've just started watching it.

Jim Ross had said somewhere recently that they had to re-record all the commentary due to a "change of direction". You can tell that the commentary isn't live, it sounds a bit like video game commentary. JR is a pro, so he's as good as he is going to be in 2017, obviously nowhere near to his best work though. Lita is awful, which I suspect may be why they had to re-record it. It's bringing it down compared to how into every match Mauro, and especially Daniel Bryan were for the CWC.

They've also dimmed the house lights so you can hardly see thew crowd like it's an episode of Thunder in 2000. I can't imagine they couldn't fill the Full Sail arena, so I guess this was just to give the show a different aesthetic. They can also light the final like this to hide all the empty seats in a big arena.

Lita has never shown the slightest bit of aptitude for commentary so you knew this wouldn't go well.  I don't know any full-time female commentators even on the indy circuit so I don't know who they could've gotten if they insisted on the affirmative action route.  Maybe they could've given Sara Del Ray a try-out, but she's never been much of a talker.  Maybe bring in Allison Danger, who has some experience and knows all these women I'm sure?  I don't know.  They would've been better off just sticking to Nigel.

I think Renee Young and Nigel McGuinness (or Corey Graves, or Daniel Bryan) would have been the good pairing.

I've never heard Renee call a match before, but she seems pretty professional on pre-shows and has a good broadcasting background so she'd probably figure it out.

She did commentary on NXT and Superstars until January 2015.

I watched all the episodes over the past few days and enjoyed the tournament, although it wasn't nearly as good as the Cruiserweight Classic.  They telegraphed the finals a bit much, it was a lot more obvious who was being pushed than in the Cruuiserweight where I was genuinely surprised that T.J. Perkins won.  This time I predicted the finals after the first round, and it's pretty clear who will win.

And I though Lita did a much better job than I would've thought based on the comments, she wasn't great but she did nothing to detract from the matches and was just fine.

Most of the shows have been easy to watch. There's no way this somehow does not set up the 4 horsewomen of NXT vs. the 4 horsewomen of UFC.

Lita's commentary definitely improves after the first episode.

I found the first four episodes pretty poor. Triple H has said that they first thought about a 16 woman tournament, but there were so many great talents out there that they went with 32, but many of the women in the opening round had little or no experience, and it showed. I think that good editing was all that made some of these matches even slightly watchable.

Apart from Kairi Sane vs. Tessa Blanchard, that was a great match. So much faster and smoother than everything that went before it. Blanchard is easily in the top four women in the tournament, and deserves props for doing her best to make Sane look good in tournament where she could have had a deep run herself.

From the second round on, the match quality increases by an order of magnitude.

I was most confused by the booking of Santana Garrett.  NXT has used her as a jobber for a while now, and she was jobbed out again in the first round.  This is an 8-year veteran with indy cred, a former NWA Women's champion, a standout in Shine and Stardom (where Kirai Sane is from), and cosmetically she's just the living embodiment of what WWE wants from a female wrestler.  When I first saw the brackets, I expected her, Mercedes Martinez, and Kirai Sane to be the ones pushed.  Other than her, the Cruiserweight and Women's tournaments have had almost no first round upsets, the ones with the big indy reps do well.  But Garrett got no love at all.  She should already have an NXT deal so it makes no sense to me.

Armchair booker Broke says have Sane win the tourney (and by extension the NXT womens title) while Shayna, Rousey and Co. appear on Raw the next week and beat the crap out of the NXT Four Horsewomen to set up a survivor series match.

Re: Garrett, my guess is WWE is having difficulties signing her for whatever reason, hence the first round loss.

Garrett was also used mostly as a jobber when she was on Impact earlier this year.

They gave Kota Ibushi a decent push without signing him, and I don't think many of the people in these tournaments are signed ahead of time.  She lost to Piper Niven and I'd be surprised if she's already signed, or in WWE's long-term plans.

The final was a great match. It's a pity the commentary wasn't really up to it. They completely missed that Sane had a pinfall counter for Shayna's submission attempts to open the match, and, when Shayna went for a pin attempt herself later in match, it was the first time she had done that in the tournament. One of the great things about JR back in the day was the crescendo of emotion he built up to, while now he's clearly just going through the motions.

Despite the lackluster commentary, though, the match is well worth going out of your way to see, even if you don't want to watch the whole tournament. The crowd were really into the match as well.

Lita tried (which is saying she was not good but wasn't as bad as I thought she would be) - but JR was abysmal throughout this thing - he got in only one good line the entire tournament and sounded like a bored JR soundbyte from a late 90's WWF video game.
