History has been made in The Land.

The Cleveland Indians defeated the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Wednesday afternoon, earning their 21st consecutive win and surpassing the 2002 Oakland Athleticsfor a new American League record.

Jay Bruce's three-run homer in the first inning, which barely cleared the left-field wall, put the Indians in front for good. Edwin Encarnacion also singled home an important run in the opening frame.

Cleveland's win moved it into a tie with the 1935 Chicago Cubs and 1880 Chicago White Stockings at 21 consecutive wins.

Those streaks are cited by some as the modern major-league record, though the 1916 New York Giants sandwiched a tie into a 26-game win streak - a feat that'sstirred up some debate about when the Indians will actually match the all-time major-league streak.

With the win, the Indians trimmed their magic number to clinch the AL Central to four, and moved three up on Houston for the best record in the Junior Circuit.
The Indians will go for win No. 22 on Thursday night when they host the Kansas City RoyalsJosh Tomlin will toe the rubber for the home side; he'll be opposed by Royals right-hander Jake Junis.

It's a remarkable achievement in this age of parity and 5-man rotations and deep bullpens and so many injuries.  So many things have to go right over the course of so many games between teams whose talent levels are more or less similar.

I have a feeling when they do lose it may be something like a 9-0 or 11-3 score.

The Indians winning 21 straight games is absolutely a big deal, but can you imagine if a team did this in 1977 or even 1987? It's telling how much MLB, despite still having great popularity, has become a niche sport in many ways.

Some stats during the streak.

The Cleveland Indians made history on Wednesday afternoon, winning their 21st consecutive game and setting an American League mark the for longest such streak in history.

Cleveland's run has been impressive, but even more extraordinary is how easily the team has handled every opponent in its path.
Here's a breakdown, by the numbers, of the sheer dominance the Indians have enjoyed over the rest of baseball since their streak began Aug. 24.

19 - Wins by the Indians' starting rotation during the 21-game streak.

0 - Runs allowed by the Indians' bullpen over the past nine days.
1.70 - Earned run average of Cleveland's rotation during the streak.
7.89 - ERA of opposing teams' starting pitchers against the Indians since their last loss.
4 - Innings Cleveland has trailed out of the 189 it's played during the winning streak. Also, the Indians' magic number to clinch their second consecutive division title.

7 - Number of times the Indians have shut out an opponent during the streak.
139 - Runs the Indians have scored against their opponents during the streak.
35 - Runs scored by their opponents during the stretch.
8 - The minimum number of games every other AL team has lost since the Indians' streak began.

18 - Extra-base hits by Jose Ramirez during the 21 games. Alternatively, teams facing the Indians have just 33 combined during the same stretch.

Yet if they don't win the World Series, they'll be remembered just like the 2002 A's are.

It was fun while it lasted.

In front of a packed house at Progressive Field, the Cleveland Indians' historic 22-game winning streak finally came to end Friday night, as the Kansas City Royals squeaked past their division rival, 4-3, to snap the longest winning streak in Major League Baseball in 101 years.

The Indians, felled for the first time since Aug. 23, came within four victories of matching the longest ever - and decidedly controversial - winning streak in baseball history, a 26-gamer by the 1916 New York Giants that, on account of a suspended game that was never completed, included a 1-1 tie. On Wednesday, with a 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers, their 21st straight victory, the Indians laid claim to the longest winning streak ever by an American League club.

"You know, the (streak), it was fun," Indians reliever Joe Smith told MLB.com's Jordan Bastian. "I still can't believe we lost. It was going to end at some point. Now all we've got to do is get everybody in good shape for October and win 11 games."

At the outset of their magical run, which began with a 13-6 victory over the Boston Red Sox, the Indians' lead atop the American League Central was 5 1/2 games. Now, more than three weeks later, the Indians are all but assured a second straight division title, boasting a 13-game advantage over the second-place Minnesota Twins with just over a fortnight to go in the regular season.

"Unreal run, still trying to grasp what this team accomplished," Indians right-hander Mike Clevinger wrote in a message posted on Twitter. "Thank you to every man in that clubhouse for showing up each and every day as well as The Land for all their support!"
