My kids are taking karate and I'd eventually would want them to transition to May Thai and some sort of grappling. Karate and Taekwondo are too formulaic. I've seen the instructor go through steps A. B, C, and D. Going through these steps depend on the attacker staying still. May Thai is straightforward and teaches dangerous strikes. It combines Boxing with kicks, knees, and elbows. I've seen many, many fights in my time. Most of them end with two people clinching each other with no one gaining an advantage. Muay Thai counters that with short elbows, knees, and headbutts. 
Any form of grappling is always good. Again, most fight end up on the ground or in close quarters. Grappling teaches throws and other takedowns.


We are going to get our guy into hand to hand combat very soon. Even though he is already big, kids want to pick on him and he doesn't fight back because he's to nice.
