I'm not sure if it was buried by the Vegas shooting or if the U.S. media just doesn't want to draw our attention to it, but there was a vote about whether Catalonia would become independent from Spain.  Polls showed only about 10% support, but then Spain, a democratic country not all that unlike our own, sent police units dressed in riot gear to attack and intimidate voters at the polling stations.  This backfired as the vote to leave won overwhelmingly by 90% as a backlash to the violence.  There is now a general strike throughout the country to protest the police violence and marching in the streets.  It's complete chaos.  In the meantime, Spanish officials refuse to admit wrong-doing despite the images that we all saw of peaceful voters being beaten.  They're going to try to fight the secession and the will of the people in court now.  Never forget that this is what government leads to, and this is what our 2nd Amendment was meant to protect against.  We are very, very close to this happening here.  Spain is not in the Middle East or North Korea, if it can happen there it can happen anywhere.  But let's keep talking about the national anthem and gun control.  It's almost impossible to find an American media source even covering this.

I've seen it quite a bit.

Images of firefighters being beaten as they stand as the line of defense between citizens and the police. Crazy shit.

I've been following it on the BBC and Al-Jazeera.  I had the CBS Evening News with that joke Scott Pelley on in the background for an hour last night and it was all Vegas and Petty.  Not one word on this.  You have to look for it.

The US-Centric coverage shouldn't be any sort of a surprise with all that's going on in the US right now. Ratings are best drawn from pseudo-concerned news anchors asking people in the middle of the Las Vegas shooting "So were you scared?"...your expectations of coverage of non-Murican news and stuff is misguided.

Polls had support for independence somewhere just below 50%, not 10% before the election. The Catalonian regional government is run by a coalition that is headed by a pro-independence party, and their leader is claiming that the vote (with a 45% turnout) was for independence, but hasn't released any official numbers. Given how difficult it was to get into a polling station, it's very likely that most of those who did vote were pro-independence. I don't see how the result of this election could ever been seen as valid.

However, the violence perpetrated by the police here was most certainly unnecessary. The violence of the Spanish police force is well known. Just ask any non-Spanish soccer fan who has gone there to watch a match. Anything excuse, and they will start laying in with their sticks.

Americans have zero backbone and huge mouths. They are on the lower end of the intelligence scale and empathy has been bred out of most of them. Look at two weeks ago when everyone was going to destroy the NFL. Last Sunday? Stadiums filled to capacity and 14% increase in TV ratings. Even small town police departments have military grade weapons and no one sees this as an issue as long as it's protecting us from the colored and the billions of ISIS cells that reside right here on Main Street USA. A wholesale slaughter of people watching a concert and the best thing anyone can say is "thoughts and prayers" or "Pray for Las Vegas". Meanwhile, the unadulterated hero worship of first responders is cranked up to 11 as if they had even the slightest role in stopping this guy.

Keep Joe Six Pack opiated with beer, and big screen 4K TV's, and football, and hatin' on the darkies and everything will keep going along just fine.

Yeah, because the police aren't already suppressing protests through violence and our government isn't already doing shady shit on both sides regarding transparent elections.  Keep telling yourself that.

Actually we are closer to guilded age America to civil war America. The divide in this country is rural vs urban. The level of disparity in all metrics between rural and urban America is the same as it was 100-125 years ago.
Trump won because those left behind voted for him. Williams Jennings Bryant was the Trump of his time and did very well as a populist presidential candidate against the establishment sans luxury of modern media.
