Wondering if there are any Sci-Fi TV fans on the board, and what they think of these two new shows.

For me, the new Star Trek looks great, but it's not enjoyable to watch. The main character is very unlikable, and none of the other characters like her either, so it's really hard to care about her story. It really doesn't feel like Star Trek, either

The Orville, on the other hand, is Star Trek in all but name. The main drawback is Seth McFarlane and his humor (and the pilot, which is fucking terrible). Hopefully, they'll be able to get the tone of the comedy right soon, but the plots have been very good so far.

I only seen the first episode of the New Star Trek. Thought the first episode was good. Goes where no other Trek show has gone. With the first officer going against the captain. I plan to watch the next two sometime this weekend.

Have not watch the Orville. All I hear about it is that its more Star Trek than the new Star Trek.

Haven't seen the new Star Trek.  I heard it was a gimmick to get you to pay for a service that basically doesn't have anything else on it and Trekkies are pissed.  I also heard the show is being pirated at such levels, and costs so much to make, that it's unsustainable and there's no way they can keep it going unless they figure out a way to make money off of it.  That's all I know about it.  I've heard nothing about the actual show.

The Orville had a weak pilot but shocked me with the quality of the next couple of episodes.  I was expecting complete satire and somehow it's already turned into something a lot more serious with limited comedy.  It's hard to even define what type of show it is or why it was made, but somehow it's working for me.  I haven't seen last night's show yet.

Star Trek Discovery is a Netflix exclusive everywhere in the world except USA and Canada. I think that's where they got most of the money to make the episodes, because Netflix did that deal over a year ago. If it does good enough numbers for Netflix, I'd see it sticking around.

enjoying Orville, like an updated original Star Trek , last episode was almost a re-write of an original one, the ship they went to was done well , it's corny but so was the original, Seth eh but most of the cast is decent

Haven't seen Discovery but I like the Orville. They play it straight 90% of the time and McFarlane is the weakest member of the cast. Last nite's episode with Charlize Theron was directed by Jonathon Frakes.

In the US the first episode of ST: Discovery was shown on the CBS Network. The others will be on the CBS all Access website.

CBS was able to almost double the mobile subscription revenue for its CBS All Access service with the premiere of “Star Trek: Discovery

It nothing really but a cash grab for CBS. As they are putting out one episode a week so people are forced to stay if they want to see it. $5.99 a month.

It's a cash grab, but it serves multiple parties. CBS is making its CBS All Access platform more viable while Star Trek fans get a new series.

Man, that last Orville episode was such a rip-off of a Black Mirror episode that I don’t know how they aren’t going to be sued.

Liked Orville.  Had no idea there was another Star Trek.  It is only available on-line?
