Once again another WWF angle played to absolute perfection by everyone involved. Sarge looked unbeatable holding on for dear life with the first two difficult bumps that would make such an awkward hold hard to hang on to. Notice for about the first 30 seconds after Pat finally breaks it he gets down on the mat in what was no doubt his favorite position. Even the cream of WWF face midcard fodder could not get Sarge off Pat.

Big angles were never wasted back then. Like the Larry Legend and Bruno one, this made the McMahons a ton of bank.

Another 5 star classic from the WWF. If I remember correctly, Slaughter goaded Patterson to take the Cobra Clutch for weeks prior to Patterson finally getting in the ring. I think that several legitimate mid-carders had failed the challenge over the previous weeks which made it seem even more of an impossible challenge. Perfect setup for the blowoff with the NY Street Fight at MSG.

First time I seen the clip. Patterson sure got a lot of action from the announers table..this and being slapped by Koloff.

"No doubt"
Yea, a great angle played out well.  It seems as though this was the point where the WWF started to do a little more than just squash matches with the occasional tag team title change on TV.  Maybe Vince was getting more creative control at that point or they were feeling the pressure from TBS who were airing top flight matches on TV.
I had forgotten the Gomer chants.  That was funny. Vince really was a very good announcer back then.  Was that Monsoon who pulled Sarg out at the end?  Also, Denucci's punches on Sarg's head were pathetic.  A no sale on that.

I believe the week before Rick McGraw took 'The Cobra Clutch Challenge' and damn near escaped it.

Nice build, the whole 'Cobra Clutch Challenge' went on for maybe a month, and yes GOMER GOMER GOMER echoed throughout the arena
