Haven't seen it in many years.  I thought it was a ho-hum match for an NWA title change, but I'd like to refresh my memory.

A clean win. Not the greatest match ever but not bad. I wonder why they had Funk drop the belt? I know Race was primarily a heel as well. They obviously turned him to face for this. Was Funk not drawing?

Wasn’t Race the transitional champ so they could get it to Jack or did they have to put it on Race due to Funk not wanting to lose it to Briscoe?

I read about this so long ago that I can't remember, but there was definitely political wrangling involved, and it's weird that these two would have the title change in Toronto where neither was particularly over.  I'm pretty sure you're correct and Funk wouldn't do the direct job.

Had no clue there was political behind the scenes stuff going on here. Both Race and Funk always portayed as 'professionals'

There are shoot interviews and books with both Funks and both Briscos where all this gets discussed.  Even a fake "ranch accident" so that Dory wouldn't have to do a job.  I just don't remember all the details now because it's been years since I cared about any of this.

I believe Dory was supposed to lose it to Jack, but they dropped it to Harley instead who held it for two months and then dropped it to Jack. Then to Terry, then to Race 4 years later here.

I don't remember how the ranch incident (dory apparently getting hurt) played into it exactly since Dory still had to lose it to Race in the ring, which he did. I *think* the injury to Dory delayed a title match between Jack and Dory where Jack was going to win the belt. Then the plan was changed thanks to Dory Sr. and Race ended up with the belt to lose to Jack.

Something like that. Could've been political, could have been legit, who knows.

Terry held the belt for a year. Said it was the hardest he ever worked, and he was split up from his wife at the time. Dory didn’t want to drop the belt at all, never mind to Brisco, so he got “seriously hurt in a truck accident at the ranch”, but was wrestling a week later in Texas. I believe this allowed him to get another nine months out of the title. Then he agreed to lose it to Harley because he didn’t trust Brisco to not shoot on him as payback. Jack held the title 3 years and wanted to lose it badly because he hated the travel, and when he agreed to lose it to Terry, Dory still didn’t trust him and I believe he was ringside with a blackjack or some other weapon in his pocket just in case he tried to break Terry’s leg. Terry supposedly wasn’t supposed to have it as long as he did - I think it was about 15 months - but Harley did something or was hurt or something that caused it to happen when it did instead of 6 months sooner. Harley then lost it to Dusty, Baba, and Rich for less than a month total until he lost it to Dusty again in ‘81 when it transitions to Flair. Harley getting it back in ‘82ish until Flair really gets the rub by beating Harley at Starrcade 83.
