Bryan Alvarez is reporting that WWE released Jim Johnston, responsible for most WWE music since forever. No word on why. If this is another cost-cutting move I don’t understand it. I don’t even know what they’ll do for music now. Other than the occasional song by Downstait or a mainstream group, Johnston did all of it.

Unless he was stealing from them and got fired, he probably asked to be released. He has to be in his 60s by now, he’s been there 30 years.

CFO$ have been doing way more WWE themes than Johnson since 2013. They're pumping out more than one new tune a week.

Kriss mentioned it first but also what I had heard, I think from Prichard's podcast, was that Johnston wasn't doing much of any entrance or theme music anymore, he was mostly working in their WWE Films division now..

I think Jim Johnston's best work is long behind him and sounds dated. As noted, he's also not their primary music guy anymore. This seems more like a case of cutting someone who is now extraneous.

PWInsider doesn't have much info but it doesn't sound like Johnson wanted to go:

First off, for those who have asked about the departure of composer Jim Johnston from WWE, all signs are that is legitimate.  WWE doesn't comment on the status of their employees, so no official announcement will be made, but the story making the rounds is that Johnston's employment contract with the company has expired and wasn't being renewed.   Out of anyone who ever deserved a WWE Hall of Fame induction, he's in the top 1%.

Johnston is responsible for Baron Corbin's new song. That might be his last piece of work that makes air.
