Buffalo broadcasting legend who had a cult following in Ontario, Irv Weinstein, passed away yesterday from ALS.  Weinstein's unique style led the local ABC affiliate's news broadcast to the #1 ratings position for a 25 year run.  Back in 70's and 80's, with TV choices limited, Weinstein's over-the-air broadcasts were also popular in southern Ontario.

In his book, “Canada,” “Saturday Night Live” and film star Mike Myers sent Weinstein an autographed copy that had a couple of pages about Myers growing up in Toronto watching Weinstein.  “We developed a drinking game,” wrote Myers. “Everyone had to take a sip of Molson’s Export every time Irv Weinstein said, ‘arson is suspected’ or ‘the suspect died later of multiple gunshot wounds.’ ” Myers concluded by saying that there were so many fires and gun battles one August evening that he almost died of alcohol poisoning.

If you're in your 40's to 60's and grew up in these parts, you will go to your grave with the disembodied voice of Weinstein intoning, "It's 11 O'clock.  Do you know where your children are?"  Fucking legend

Eyewitness news. Watched him for years growing up.

Every newscast would have Irv Start off talking about a fire in Lackawana, Cheektowaga, Tonawanda, Grand Island or Depew

I met Irv about 5 or 6 years ago. He used to come back to town for things like the Variety Club Telethon. I helped him load all of his stuff in the car, etc as his hands were very shaky and he was 82. He tried to tip me and I refused saying he was my childhood. He quipped with a completely straight face: "and what a fine man you turned out to be!"

RIP Irv. A couple of friends and I will be playing the Eyewitness News board game this weekend.

Did he give the weather for Toronto in his forecasts? I know a ton of people from the GTO and they would all get pissed that that local Buff stations acted like the border was the end of the earth. I probably spent more than a year of my life (total over many years) in Canada and only watched the US local news a few times. I preferred the guy on CBC.

No on the weather, even though nowadays, that's 75% of the newscast.

Actually, they don't even give you the shootings in the city anymore unless someone was killed. And even then, they act like some gang member was on the verge of turning his life around and becoming a brain surgeon. Irv would give you every wound, every arson fire, and liked it. It's hard to cover arsons now because so much of the city has been bulldozed.

No, they don't give a forecast that specifically focuses on Ontario, but when they run down current conditions, the map will show the region and they'll often mention temps and conditions in Ft. Erie, St. Catherine's, Hamilton, or Toronto. The problem with doing a forecast for those areas is that the climate is significantly different, despite the proximity of the two regions. WNY is downwind of Lake Erie, while the GTA and southern Ontario are to the west of Lake Ontario, so they don't get lake breezes or lake effect snow to the extent that WNY does. When I went to Toronto a couple weeks ago, my neck of the woods was buried in snow but somewhere between Ft. Erie and Niagara Falls Canada, the ground became completely bare and stayed that way.

So true, LAF, that the news now makes sure that every time some Dindu from the Fruit Belt or the East side gets offed, they find one of his aunts to give him the Michael "Gentle Giant" Brown treatment.

At 11 pm last night, I knew where my children were.

Rest in peace, Mr. Weinstein.

I think that started when that guy shot up that restaurant Downtown in....2010? All of the victims also had lengthy criminal histories and the "I'm Offended" crowd got all angry and called everyone racists. Plus the political climate that was brewing.

I guess in the old days of Chicago, when mobsters were gunning each other down, the news was supposed to pretend that the victims were not mobsters.
