No idea if he had any impact in the States - despite a dozen charting singles and two dozen charting albums he didn't really here - but the cantankerous, curmudgeonly, contradictory and genius motive force behind The Fall died today age 60.

Not unexpected, given his copious consumption of alcohol, but this is still a bad one.  Still putting out material last year.  Still ranting about all and sundry.  Pharma, the death of Pope John Paul I, the process of songwriting, bingo, Greek football clubs...

Sucks. Got into the Fall early on in my university days.

The Fall are criminally underrated in the big picture and criminally unknown here in the States. legend has it that they were about to get signed to Motown (although in spite of what came next, that still strikes me as bizzare), however, they then released a song called "The Classical" that featured Mark E. Smith intoning, "where are the obligatory niggers?" Not the wisest career move, but then I don't think he was bothered one way or the other. Superstardom never seemed a priority. American indie darlings Pavement would later cover "The Classical", sans the offending verse. Both versions are quality.

Somehow, despite an innumerable amount of turnover, The Fall just kept cranking out top quality tunes for decades. Now's as good a time as any to dip your toes in the water. Check out Mark Prindle's encyclopedic entry on The Fall to see if anything sounds intriguing.

Is this song appropriate tonight?  I'm sure Mark E. Smith wouldn't object.

I tried to listen to a few of these songs, but as far as weird pseudo-punk/jazz with elevator music mixed with strange lyrics, I strongly prefer Frank Zappa.
