I just found a whole load of SMW TV on the Youtubes. I'm not sure it goes right to the end of the promotion yet, but it seems to be every show in order from the first one. It's much better than I thought it was going to be. Mr. Ron Wright is outstanding. The best thing so far, ring-wise, for me, is this match from episode 9. The Fultons vs. Joel Deaton and Billy Black. I had seen almost nothing of Black before, and he looks like absolute shit, but his in-ring work was fantastic. This match wouldn't look out of place on today's NXT, minus the cowboy hats and mullets. The vid below should start right where the match kicks off, if not, FF to 29:15.

Black and Deaton could really go during the early 90's.  The time they spent in All-Japan paid dividends in the ring.  Unfortunately, there was nowhere in the U.S. where they could make a decent buck.  They had good matches for Pedicino and Cornette, but their look just wasn't right for the big two.  Even in All-Japan, they had Kroffat and Furnas ahead of them in the pecking order of mid-card gaijin

The moonsaults and other acrobatic moves Black pulled off really didn't fit his outlaw cowboy gimmick. It's hilarious listening to Bob Caudle trying to commentate on this match as he has no idea what's going on.

Black burned every bridge he ever came across, and pissed on the ashes, then buried the ashes in the forest, burned the forest, then pissed on those ashes.

Never knew these guys to be anything but jobbers in the States, especially Deaton who I think was a long-time jobber as himself and wearing masks in JCP. This was a good match and interesting that SMW apparently made deal to show AJPW footage on their show. Talk about a clash of styles.

Too bad Jim couldn’t get Misawa to come in and challenge for the SMW tv title

The one knock on Misawa was that he never could have a good match with anyone not in his regular crew.  Even his ROH matches were below the standards of the day for top Japan guys coming in.  Kobashi vs. Samoa Joe blew away Misawa vs. Samoa Joe.  Misawa in SMW would've been hilarious.

Is the belief that misawa needed to work himself into a groove with someone through repeated encounters or was he only looking to put on his A game when working for the A team?

I know they were on opposite ends of the financial and exposure spectrum but it would have been very interesting to look back on it if SMW and AJPW did work some shows together in America.

Closer to the former.  He had some big matches in Japan where he would've been motivated to put forth a great effort, but the matches still didn't click unless it was one of 10 guys that he always worked with.

I generally enjoy Misawa’s work but admittedly most of his work that I have seen is in the AJPW mid 90’s sweet spot. I’ll venture a little further and see how I feel about it.
